Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.810733 Composed by Herbert L. Clarke. Arranged by Geoffrey Bergler. 20th Century,Folk. Score and parts. 19 pages. Gordon Cherry #1986139. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810733). Cornet solos are an important part of the American Brass tradition. The Southern Cross is one of Clarke's most well known Cornet solos and was written in 1911, dedicated to the Australians and first recorded by the composer with Orchestra the next year  for Victor Records. During 1911, Clarke was the solo Cornetist of the Sousa Band while the band was on a world tour that included visits to South Africa, Tazmania and Australia from March through to August. Below is a photo of the Sousa band from their 1911 tour. Clarke is sitting in the front row 5th in from the right with his moustache and his Cornet on his lap. He assuredly composed this solo to perform on that tour. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is only seen from the southern hemisphere and features the five stars of the Cross from the 1901 design of the Australian flag. This 5-minute virtuosic arrangement by Geoffrey Bergler features not only the Cornet, but a bit of all the other four members of the Brass Quintet. Instrumentation is for: 2 Trumpets in B-flat (Trumpet 1 solo, Trumpet 2 also plays Piccolo) Horn, Trombone Tuba/Bass Trombone The sound track features Mr. Bergler from his student days as Cornet soloist.

Small Ensemble B-Flat Trumpet,Horn,Organ,Piano,Trombone,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1124315 Composed by Franz Liszt. Arranged by William J. Bullock. Christmas,Holiday,Renaissance,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 17 pages. Sigma Squared Music #725068. Published by Sigma Squared Music (A0.1124315). Michael Praetorius’ setting of the sixteenth-century carol Psallite, unigenito made the carol so famous that later composers were enticed to use the carol as the basis for new compositions. One such composer was Franz Liszt, who used it to begin a set of Christmas piano works he composed for his granddaughter, Daniela. She was the first person to hear the work, when Liszt played it for her on Christmas Day, 1881, in her hotel room in Rome. Written in a style typical of the composer’s autumnal works, the movement exploits the melody’s initial bell motto in an elevated style. This arrangement enhances that style by transcribing it for organ (or piano) and brass quintet.

Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.840947 Composed by Hans Leo Hassler. Arranged by Richard Decker. Chamber,Early Music,Multicultural,Renaissance,World. 62 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #447653. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.840947). Hans Leo Hassler (1562-1612) was truly a Renaissance man. Not only was he a noted composer of sacred (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and secular music both instrumental and vocal, but he was also a talented organist, Kappelmeister in various churches and cities, music businessman and additionally involved in the construction and manufacture of mechanical musical instruments. Though spending most of his professional life in German (Augsburg, Nuremburg and Dresden), Hassler studied with Andrea Gabrieli in Venice alongside fellow student Giovanni Gabrieli. These three vocal works highlight his integration of the leading compositional styles of the time including his foray into significant chromaticism in his Ad Dominum, cum tribularer. Brass quintets will find these three vocal transcriptions a welcome addition to the literature and concert repertoire. The arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets with optional C trumpet parts, horn in F, trombone and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.See more than 70 mixed brass ensemble publications with Charles Decker Music Press at Sheet Music Plus for inexperienced to advanced musicians with music ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary new works for trios, quartets, quintets, brass choir and brass band. Many of the mixed brass ensemble editions include alternate and substitute parts being alternate C trumpet parts for B-flat trumpet parts, flugelhorn/trumpet substitute for horn, horn substitute for trombone and treble clef euphonium substitute for trombone. Brass Quintet Cornet,Euphonium,Flugelhorn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1145313 Composed by Will Marion Cook. Arranged by Charles Decker. 20th Century,Broadway,Jazz,Multicultural,Musical/Show,Pop,World. 20 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #745558. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.1145313). Swing Along! by Will Marion Cook, prominent African-American in Music Theater, composer, conductor, and violinist, combines Cakewalk style with classical music techniques to create an entertaining and memorable work from the early 20th century now arranged for a brass quintet of two trumpets or cornets in B-flat, horn in F (alternate flugelhorn part provided), trombone and tuba. The recording is of the complete edition. Cook was a key figure in American music from the 1890s to the 1920s. His Swing Along! was written for a theater production in 1903 combining Black folk music with classical music techniques and became a popular standard with choruses and glee clubs. A violin virtuoso, he studied at Oberlin College, Berlin's Hochschule für Musik with Joseph Joachim, and New York's National Conservatory of Music with Antonin Dvorak. He devoted his career to Black musical comedies and was instrumental in showcasing his Southern Syncopated Orchestrat throughout the Unites States and Europe, featuring New Orleans clarinetist Sidney Bechet. Mentored by Frederick Douglas, Will Marion Cook went on to mentor Duke Ellington, paving the path for orchestral concert jazz. “The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Interesting music, expertly arranged, fun to perform, and well received by audiences. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .  Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.   Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).     Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.     English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.    Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.   This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1401614 Composed by Joseph Lamb. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Classical,Historic,Ragtime. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #984793. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1401614). Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music. The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€Â    But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.    Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three†composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.    Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.    One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.†(The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.      This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Throughout the arrangement, the original melody is maintained and featured, but in some sections the background and harmony are altered to feature one or more of the five instruments.  In the Trio, the sections designated by rehearsal marks F and G are slowed and treated as a serenade; the original tempo is restored at H.  In performing this arrangement, players should pay particular attention to dynamics.  Additionally, because of the nature of ragtime, this piece may require more-than-usual practice and rehearsal.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Aleko, by Sergei Rachmaninoff, an early composition from 1892 is a one act tragic opera based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin called The Gypsies. The opera was a graduation work for the Moscow Conservatory, winning the highest prizes from the judges that year. Although the music is heavily influenced by the great Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff shows that he is quite capable of walking in his own shoes. The dramatic music Two Dances has been beautifully arranged by Charles Decker for traditional Brass Quintet (Trumpet I in B-flat/Piccolo Trumpet, Trumpet II in B-flat, Horn, Trombone and Tuba.) The music is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 6-minutes in length.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church. Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody. Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom. She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart. Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.” Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular. When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind. J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded. In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original. You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences. This composition is 201 measures in length. It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141). Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C. There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing. The introduction is 21 measures in length. It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto. In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression. At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles. The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme. Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds. Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument. The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Quintet Bass Trombone,Horn,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1472617 Composed by Bill Conti. Arranged by Mary Clark. Classical,Film/TV. 11 pages. Second Wind Music #1050268. Published by Second Wind Music (A0.1472617). “Philadelphia Morning” is a powerfully expressive composition that sets the tone for a scene early in the movie Rocky when the main character has just found out the he will get to fight the world champion boxer and sets out for a training run in the gritty city streets of Philadelphia at 4 a.m. on a dark, cold, dreary winter day. (click here to see a clip of this scene from the movie) This beautifully written piece is penetrating and pensive in describing the battle within, the solitude of it, the impossibility at hand, and generally, the struggle involved in pushing oneself. There is a powerful but subtle orchestration here; the sound of a kind of musical undertow — an undertow that is pulling our hero down, as if giving him leaden legs, or of running in quicksand. But there is also a twinkle of possibility. At the end, the [music] trails off and there is uncertainty in the air.” [From: Jack Doyle, “Philadelphia Morning: 1976-1977,” PopHistoryDig.com, March 25, 2015.]This brass quintet arrangement of Philadelphia Morning would work well as a short concert piece that showcases the expressive qualities of the French horn as well as that of the whole ensemble. This piece has a quiet, pensive, somewhat moody tempermanent. While this arrangement is not technically challenging (other than the range for the horn part noted below), the lean scoring and soft dynamics requires the ensemble to pay close attention to balance and play as one in style, tone quality, and expressiveness. Phrases passing from one player to another need to flow as if being played on a piano. The expressive opening eight-bar horn solo, which is a direct transcription from the movie score, is mostly unaccompanied and ranges up to a high b-flat so a strong, confident horn player is needed – but they will surely enjoy playing this elegantly written passage. (The film soundtrack recording features Vincent DeRosa on horn.) The bass trombone part can be played on a tuba.

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158199 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,March,Patriotic. 32 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758476. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158199). There is nothing more quintessentially military than the grand sound of marches at special military events. Hundreds of marches have served their purposes through the many decades of military tradition in the United States of America. This 3.5-minute march was composed for the occasion of the change of command of the 55th Wing—“The Fightin’ 55thâ€â€”under Air Combat Command, located at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The ceremony took place on June 14, 2019, which was also Flag Day. The new march served as a grateful tribute to the outgoing Commander, Colonel Michael H. Manion, and a welcoming gesture to the new Commander, Colonel Gavin P. Marks. Printed copies of the score were presented to the Commanders before the ceremony, and the march was premiered as the final pre-ceremony musical selection. The opening motifs are strongly reminiscent of the introductory measures of the “Air Force Song†most commonly played by Air Force brass quintets. Keeping in tradition with the form of most marches, the “Trio†section presents new material in a new key (down a fifth), with a contrastingly quiet dynamic. The opening motif of the Trio strain is a mutation, or a paraphrase, of “Anchors Aweighâ€, emphasizing the joint-force nature of the 55th Wing. The melody is repeated with a louder dynamic and a countermelody in the horn, and then is repeated once more with increased excitement in the accompaniment, variety of dynamics, and even a temporary key shift. Straying from the form most used by the “March Kingâ€, John Philip Sousa, Dr. Thrower omitted a fourth or final strain, and instead he modulated the key back to the original B-flat major and brought back the melodic content from the first strain. This form predates Sousa, and was more commonly used in Europe and early America. It smacks of “sonata formâ€, and even the modern formal designation of “recapitulating march†alludes to sonata form. The final recapitulating strain repeats with an obbligato soaring above it in the first trumpet part, now on piccolo trumpet. The march ends with a short coda that brings back the opening motivic allusion to the Air Force Song. Due to the selected formal structure, this march, “The Fightin’ 55thâ€, is much more unified than most typical marches. The very nature of military marches (including America’s beloved “Stars and Stripes Foreverâ€) displays four or even five completely unrelated melodies, or strains, throughout. The incorporation of thematic structure similar to that found in sonata form indeed makes “The Fightin’ 55th†an appropriate and even artistic concert march.

I know he is famous for his Washington Greys but the fact is that he wrote around 20 other marches (quicksteps) The original is a piano piece I discovered through the Library of Congress. The actual original sheet music may now reside in The Duke Collection which was on loan to the LOC at the time I did this arrangement. Like many Brass Quintets the melody is mostly in the trumpets. However, the lower brass do get a piece of the melody from time to time. Probably around two minutes. 102 measures. F and B-flat major. Probably a grade 3. Highest trumpet pitch is g on the top of the staff.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811250). The Severn Suite (Op.87) was composed by Elgar when he was 73 as a test piece for the 1930 British National Brass Band Championships. Elgar dedicated it to his friend, the author, and critic George Bernard Shaw. Some critics consider the Severn Suite to be Elgar’s best work in his later years, arguing that is a neglected masterpiece. The work is very Elgarian in the high Romantic style. It is fine music originally composed for brass by a famous acknowledged master that will be enjoyable for players and audiences alike. The duration of the full piece is around 16:30 and includes five movements, that follow each other without breaks: 1) Introduction (Worcester Castle) – Pomposo (2:10), 2) Toccata (the Tournament Grounds) - Allegro molto (4:20), 3) Fugue (The Cathedral) – Andante (3:00), 4) Minuet (in the Commandery) (5:00) – Moderato, and 5) Coda - Lento – Pomposo (2:00). The River Severn runs through the center of Worcester, England where Elgar spent his childhood and again lived in later life. This work beautifully arranged by Mark LaFratta for standard brass quintet (2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone in bass clef and Tuba) is appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed by all conical instruments as well (Cornets, Horn, Euphonium, and Tuba).

Score and parts provided Full Score 2 Trumpets in B Flat Horn in F Trombone Tuba Drums Eb Alto Horn (Substitute for Horn in F) Baritone T.C. (Substitute for Trombone) "Good-Bye Broadway, Hello France? is a 1917 song composed byBilly Baskette, with lyrics written by C. Francis Reisner and Benny Davis. While the song was popular during its time, it also saw a revival during WorldWar II, where some soldiers preferred World War I songs over the war songsbeing produced at the time. ?How Ya GonnaKeep ?em Down on the Farm (After They?ve Seen Paree?)? is a World War I songthat rose to popularity after the war had ended. The music is by Walter Donaldson. The lyricshighlight concern that American soldiers from rural environments would not wantto return to farm life after experiencing the European city life and culture ofParis during World War I. It became popular among soldiers in the First WorldWar and is remembered as one of the more songs of World War I. This skillful and fun arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of theoriginal tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100thanniversary of World War I. A retired memberof the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Productionstaff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, JariVillanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements areplayed by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the countryincluding many military groups. Many of his arrangements can be found on SheetMusic Plus and JV MUSIC.

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792497 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. Baroque,Classical,Renaissance. Score and parts. 27 pages. Gordon Cherry #4988365. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792497). J. S. Bach’s massive work, The Art of Fugue, is a summation of his powers as a composer of contrapuntal music. Each fugue is a masterpiece in its own right. Number 15 is an unfinished four-voice, quadruple fugue. Only the first three subjects are introduced, the third being a chromatic subject built from the letters of Bach’s name-B (B-flat), A, C, H (B-natural). Just at the point where all three subjects are combined, the manuscript breaks off, and C. P. E. Bach wrote in the score that the composer has died. Bach clearly intended that the original Art of Fugue theme was to be the final subject and all four themes would combine in a glorious climax. Whether he intended to finish the work or leave it up to others to complete is conjecture. About 8 minutes in length.
