Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1028034 Composed by Maxwell Olson. Contemporary,Jazz,Latin,World. Score. 7 pages. Jake Madeira #3223163. Published by Jake Madeira (A0.1028034). This étude is one of energetic character with simple, yet powerful melodies and rhythms that create a sense of curiosity. I composed this piece in a simpler form when I was around 17, in my high school music theory class. All of the ideas were there, melody and structure, but what it lacked was experience. It felt flat. So, 5 years later, after I rediscovered the piece, I decided to put some time into adding flavor, excitement, and intrigue. In doing so, I hope that I've created not only a technical challenge that will strengthen your skills, but a fun piece of music that you'll love to play!Split into three parts in an ABA format, this piece features a main theme divided by a softer second theme, both of which provide technical challenges in their own rights. The first focus of this étude is to build stamina in maintaining rapid octave progressions in each hand. This is coupled with quick jumps in the right hand that require precise and deliberate movements to perfect. The second focus is to strengthen control over legato passages in rolling arpeggios, while maintaining a delicate touch for the melody, and exercising the dynamic range of the fingers. In practicing this piece, it is very important to start slowly and with definitive control in all sections! It cannot be stressed enough how much of an impact bad habits can make on the execution of this étude. If you work diligently on finger control and technique, it will stick with you in all of your future endeavors! Be warned though: this is a difficult piano solo. It will take time and effort to learn, however, those efforts will all pay off in the end. Don't let it discourage you. I wish you all luck in learning this étude, and if you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me at walkingreject@gmail.com.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1013230 Composed by Rudesindo Soutelo. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards,World. Score. 10 pages. Publisher by Rudesindo Soutelo #6080217. Published by Publisher by Rudesindo Soutelo (A0.1013230). Rudesindo Soutelo:Prelúdio da Montanha Mágica / Prelude to The Magic Montain.Tribute to Thomas Mann. (1996) [6'40]ISWC: T-041.574.847-8ISMN: 979-0-9007529-5-6Première: 19-IX-2004. Museu de Belas Artes, Corunha(Galiza). Piano: Genaro Fernández. This work is a tribute to Thomas Mann, who published The Magic Mountain in 1924 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929.According to the author’s own words, the novel is a journey into decay which is lived in a mountain sanatorium dedicated to the cure of tuberculosis. But it is also the search for the idea of man, the concept of a future humanity through the prism of death. The uneven rhythmic pattern of the score (6+5+5/16 and 9+7/16) sifts the hope and generates restlessness. The generating complex {6,5,5,9,7} conforms the DNA of the whole work and is present in both formal structure and harmony or melody. The funerary sequence of the Gregorian, ‘Dies irae, dies illa’ (On the day of the wrath, that day), hangs throughout the piece until it becomes evident and dominates the spirit. The death precedes to a new life.---Esta obra é uma homenagem a Thomas Mann, quem publicou A Montanha Mágica em 1924 e recebeu o prémio Nobel de Literatura em 1929.

Contains:
"Throwing The Dice"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano collections, "Active Imagination / Reconstructed" (also available on SMP)
Sounds like: Liz Story's ("Things With Wings"), Philip Aaberg, George Winston, early Windham Hill solo piano artists
Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording
Note: A slightly different version of this composition is also heard on the Isadar album, "Reconstructed" (Produced by Will Ackerman)
Album & Songbook Review by: Kathy Parsons
I love this CD! It constantly amazes me how many outstanding composer/pianists there are out there - especially in relation to the few who are highly (commercially) successful within this broad genre. I would say that Active Imagination definitely belongs near the top of the heap. Isadar’s style is original, and his pianism is excellent. He lists his inspirations as Liz Story, Keith Jarrett, and Bill Evans, and I can hear traces of all three in his playing, but find his composing and playing styles to be uniquely his own.
The first three tracks are lively and upbeat (“Active Imagination”, “Throwing the Dice”, and “Where the Wild Things Are”) with an easy, jazzy, improvised feel. The meter changes are fascinating, and the bluesy beat on “Wild Things” is infectious.
From there, the mood seems to gradually darken and become more introspective. “Waiting” is a beautiful, flowing mood piece full of questions and a lovely melody line. Isadar’s cover of Liz Story’s “Wedding Rain” is wonderful - this is a piece I often work on with my advanced students, and everything about Isadar’s interpretation of the piece seems right without being a carbon-copy of Liz’s recording.
“Feu Follet (the ‘spook’ light’)” has a nice, easy flow with a strong sense of mystery; it also has an unusual rhythm that lightens the mood and adds a bounce. “Uncertainty” is cooler and more aloof, but gorgeous in its flowing introspection - that it ends with a major chord, feels like the soul-searching has had positive results. “Love Chaconne” is the closing track, and is the longest and most abstract piece on the CD. The left hand plays a repeated pattern while the right hand goes off in several different directions (one of the primary characteristics of a “chaconne”). Beautiful in its simplicity, this is the only track that seems to contain an element of pain and sorrow, but never dissolves into melodrama.
Active Imagination is excellent from start to finish and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes solo piano with substance and complexity, but is still accessible, melodic, and rhythmic. Bravo amundo!
Active Imagination Sheet Music Collection is the companion songbook to Isadar’s 1999 CD release, Active Imagination. The CD was one of my favorites for the year when I reviewed it for the print version of “Wind and Wire” magazine, so I was really looking forward to the sheet music! Transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of ShentonMusic.com (I proofed about half of the book, so I can attest to how accurate it is!), it is up to you to make the music sound as close to the CD as you want or to interpret the music and make your own statements with it.
One thing that really stands out about this collection is how much FUN it is to play. The rhythms are interesting and catchy, and the mood in several of the songs is playful and upbeat. This is especially true with the title song, “Throwing the Dice,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” and “Feu Follet (the ‘spook’ light).” “Waiting,” “Love Chaconne,” and “Uncertainty” are slower, more introspective, and a bit moody, making this a sheet music collection that contains a variety of moods and styles. The only piece missing from the book is Liz Story’s “Wedding Rain,” but the sheet music for that song is available in some of Ms. Story’s own collections.
Early-advanced players should have no trouble with this music. The timing on some of the songs is a little bit tricky, but if you count it as you are learning it, it will fall into place.
If you haven’t heard the CD, check it out, too! This book is available here from SMP, isadar.com and amazon.com. Highly recommended!
Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more...
Also available as sheet music in physical songbooks, digital downloads, as well as software for Yamaha Disklavier player-pianos.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1277927 Composed by Terry Gilkyson. Arranged by Thomas Gunther. Comedy,Film/TV,Jazz. Score. 2 pages. Thomas Gunther Music Productions #869433. Published by Thomas Gunther Music Productions (A0.1277927). About the arrangement(See also (PopJazzKeys.com/The-Bare-Necessities)This is a relatively easy to play solo piano jazz arrangement of THE BAR NECESSITIES. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long. What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!Who this arrangement is best suited forI think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later. How I arranged itAs I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions. The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower. Tips for how to learn this arrangementWhen I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.

Piano Solo - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Edward Elgar (1857-1934). Arranged by Edward Elgar. Romantic Period, Funeral, Recital. Score. 8 pages. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha
Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme.
Elgar dedicated the work "to my friends pictured within", each variation being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close acquaintances (see musical cryptogram). Those portrayed include Elgar's wife Alice, his friend and publisher Augustus J. Jaeger and Elgar himself.
In naming his theme "Enigma" Elgar posed a challenge which has generated much speculation but has never been conclusively answered. The Enigma is widely believed to involve a hidden melody.
The name of the variation IX (NIMROD) refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as "a mighty hunter before the Lord", Jäger being German for hunter.
In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny ("Dorabella") that this variation is not really a portrait, but "the story of something that happened". Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. "And that is what you must do", Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of "Nimrod" were made to suggest that theme. "Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation."
This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks.
An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk as part of the score

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1030831 Composed by Michael C. Brown. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score. 23 pages. Michael C. Brown #4051. Published by Michael C. Brown (A0.1030831). This piece celebrates the life and mourns the loss of my granddaughter, Paisley Gladys Hogan, who was but 2 months old when she was called to Heaven. These are the words I wrote just before her funeral.... I. The Presence - She was here. I held her the day she was born. I held her and watched her smile at me less than 24 hours before she departed. She only knew love. No one around her ever showed her anything else that humanity had to offer; like hatred, heartache, pain, control, or anger. II. The Shock - She feels a Hand beckon her to leave her mortal coil, and she enters into a world we cannot yet reach.. With no one home, her former body ceases to wake. The unimaginable has happened and we struggle to reverse it. Finally, it becomes clear that we cannot. She sees us cry and she wonders what is happening. Having never known sorrow, she only sees that love didn't cause this response. She wants to comfort us with the love she knows, but we do not yet sense it. III. The Questions - One word has confounded mankind from its creation; Why? We have never found an acceptable answer. We ask, Why did this happen? and What did I do? and What didn't we do right? and Why couldn't it have been me? among others. We only know that her absence has carved holes in our hearts shaped like her. She tries to tell us, You can still love me. I just cannot be seen by you now. It does not mean your love cannot make me happy. I still want it. I still feel it. Please feel my love for you. IV. Letting Go - The day comes to bid farewell to the vehicle by which she came to us. We struggle to cope that we will see her face no more except in pictures. Because of the brevity of her life, memories are few to relive, but to do so is to recall happiness. In sorrow, we return her to the earth. All that is left is to return to recall, to talk to her, to bring flowers and other gifts, and to await the day we follow her. V. Remembering - The days and years follow. Normalcy slowly sets back into our lives. The holes in our hearts will never fully heal. But the salve of her love and her memory help to soothe the ache. We still return to where we placed her mortal home, where we laugh and cry in tandem, where our hearts ache to fill the void left by her departure. It will never really get better, but it will become easier for her love to dull the sting of her absence. VI. The Reunion - One by one, we will feel the same Hand bid us to come. The same events will befall those left behind each time. One by one, she will greet us as we reunite with her. We marvel at how she has stayed with us as we stay to comfort those we had just bidden farewell. The rest cannot be imagined by we that remain..........

Stephen R Dalrymple #4967137. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818282). Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in a small village in Austria, near the Hungarian border. ♫ His father was a wheelwright and a leader of the town. His mother had been a cook in the palace of a Count. His father had taught himself to play the harp. His family was musical and often sang together (16 brothers and sisters). His father saw that he was extremely musical and that he couldn’t get the education he needed in his little village. When he was 6 years old, he was sent to the home of a relative about 7 miles away to study to be a musician. He never lived with his parents again. ♫ In 1752 he was employed by Count Karl Joseph Morzin, leading the Count’s small orchestra and writing the first of his symphonies. ♫ In 1760 he married Maria Keller. They had a very unhappy marriage, producing no children. ♫ In 1760 Count Paul Andre Esterhazy (one of the wealthiest and most important nobles in the Austrian empire) hired him as assistant director of music. In 1766 at the age of 34, Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy appointed Haydn his Director of Music. His job was divided between the Esterhazy palace in Austria their palace across the border Hungary. ♫ Haydn dedicated Piano Sonata 40 to Princess Marie Esterhazy. He worked for the Esterhazys for the next 28 years, writing hundreds of pieces of music for the prince. After about 15 years, he signed a new contract allowing him to write music for other customers. Haydn’s reputation grew to international fame. ♫ Haydn wrote 104 Symphonies. Not unlike George Washington, nicknamed the “Father of our Countryâ€, yet had no children, Haydn is known as the “Father of the Symphony.†♫ Napoleon captured Vienna in 1809. Napoleon, himself, ordered an honor guard be placed at Haydn’s home where Haydn lay dying. ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I use an Amazon Kindle with Mobile Sheets Pro and an Air Turn blue tooth foot pedal to practice and perform piano music. Similar products available to provide other tablets the same functionality. ♫ The pieces in this series have not been arranged, but most have been edited slightly, and have been formatted to fit this screen size. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages. These kinds of section repeats were invented to spare the composer’s time and the cost of extra paper and ink. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1495477 By Damien Gauci. By Damien Gauci. Classical,Contemporary. Score. 36 pages. Damien Gauci #1071994. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1495477). This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

The “Morning prelude†is the restless awakening; the “Dawn in the window†is the light of the new day enlightening the spirit. Creative imagination manifests itself in the “Little lead soldiers’ waltzâ€, who turn rifles into pairs to dance with. From the hill where he lives, the boy contemplates the city crowned by “The immersing cathedralâ€, which was once a spiritual fortress and now the bells echo its inexorable decline, diluting into the surrounding criminal urbanism. The “March of the astonished ant†is about the adventures of an ant who wanders off the path and meets a playful child who likes to put so many obstacles in her way that she is astonished; however, she doesn’t give up her endeavour, takes a deep breath, gains courage and, although exhausted, manages to free herself. The complexes that organise the work are [5, 5, 5, 8] and [9, 7].There's a guitar transcription. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873027 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Sally Whitwell #3867219. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873027). At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I don’t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emma’s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didn’t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didn’t want to call because I knew she’d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldn’t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that it’s structurally sound. I didn’t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed. I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldn’t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I can’t even now remember why, which means it can’t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat. So I guess it did its job, but now it’s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). 20th Century,Contemporary,Film/TV,Jazz,Ragtime. Score. 7 pages. Martyn Johnson #939714. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1355003). This is a beautiful golden oldie from 1929 resurrected by Sting in 1982 and used in the film Brimstone and Treacle. I have made a Stride piano arrangement and taken it through two keys Eb and E major. It should be played in a lively and cheerful manner. It is a fun song but still quite nostalgic. The stride left hand can be quite tricky and any 10ths can be replaced by either single notes or octaves depending on your hand size. I haven't notated fingering, pedal or dynamics as no two piano teachers would ever agree on these and I prefer to leave it to the discretion of the individual pianist. Please note this is sheet music for a piano solo and doesn't contain notation from the other instruments used on my youtube channel (Bass Guitar etc). It's a lovely tune and I hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.
