String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552063 Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #6105631. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552063). Score: 6 pagesDuration: ca. 4:40. The famous Pachelbel Canon arranged for String Quartet A great choice for weddings & receptions! Pachelbel's Canon Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major. History In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

Jmsgu3 #882787. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1292197). John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a Doctor of Music at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the 1613 wedding of the princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. Tomkins' compositions are notable for their rich harmonies and expressive melodies.Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Sweelinck was a Dutch composer and organist who was highly regarded during the Renaissance period. He was known for his keyboard music, particularly his variations and fantasias. Sweelinck's compositions had a significant influence on Bull and other composers of the time. These composers, along with John Bull, were influential figures in the development of Renaissance music and significantly contributed to the repertoire of keyboard and choral music during that era.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1290377 Composed by William Byrd. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance. 6 pages. Jmsgu3 #881088. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1290377). William Byrd was an English composer and organist who lived during the Renaissance period. He is considered one of the greatest composers of the era and had a profound influence on composers both from his native country and on the Continent. Byrd is best known for his development of the English madrigal and his ability to elevate the English keyboard style through his compositions for virginal and organ music. He was a pupil and protégé of the organist and composer Thomas Tallis, and his first authenticated appointment was as organist at Lincoln Cathedral in 1563. Byrd's output of about 470 compositions amply justifies his reputation as one of the great masters of European Renaissance music. He was adept at attracting sponsorship, and his most important patrons were Roman Catholic sympathizers. Byrd was responsible for the publication of about 10 volumes of songs by other composers, his role as publisher allowing him to play an even more prominent part in making both literary and musical composition much more broadly available to a public audience.

Chamber,Christian,Historic,Religious,Renaissance. 26 pages. Jmsgu3 #882018. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1291367). John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a Doctor of Music at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins. The significance of John Bull's Salvator Mundi lies in its historical and cultural importance as a musical composition. John Bull was a prominent English composer, and his work Salvator Mundi is part of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, a collection of keyboard music from the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods. Bull's music is highly regarded, placing him among the foremost composers of his time, along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins. The term Salvator Mundi also appears in a papal bull issued by Boniface VIII in the 14th century, which was a definitive statement of the late medieval theory of hierocracy, emphasizing the pope's supremacy. Salvator Mundi is also known as the title of a famous painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, which has been the subject of extensive investigation regarding its materials and techniques. Therefore, Salvator Mundi holds significance in music, history, and art.

Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #998489. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1416898). The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. While Brahms did not have a close personal relationship with the organ, the genre of the chorale prelude allowed him to pay homage to his musical heritage, following the conventions of the form by paraphrasing and elaborating on pre-existing Lutheran chorale melodies. The Fugue in A-flat minor is considered one of the most significant and high-quality of Brahms' early organ works. It was eventually assigned the posthumous opus number 122, which is still known today. So, in summary, the Fugue in A-flat minor is an essential early organ work by Brahms that demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint, even though the organ was not his primary instrument. It is considered a significant and high-quality piece within Brahms' overall organ output.

Duration: ca. 3:00.Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BWV 558 is a work for organ composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in the early 18th century. It is part of his collection of preludes and fugues for organ, the Great Eighteen Chorale Preludes, and is one of the most beloved and often performed of all his works. The prelude is marked by its dramatic and intense character, with an ascending and descending chromatic scale providing a powerful climax. The fugue is marked by its intricate contrapuntal writing and shifts in tonality, as Bach builds up a complex texture of musical lines. Together, the prelude and fugue form a powerful and emotionally charged work, with the prelude providing a stark contrast to the more complex fugue. This work is a testament to Bach's mastery of the organ and the contrapuntal techniques he employed. It is a beloved and timeless masterpiece of the Baroque era.

Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Wedding. 25 pages. Jmsgu3 #937636. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1352879). César Franck's Pastorale, Op. 19, composed in 1863, is historically significant for its departure from traditional pastoral music conventions. Unlike typical pastoral compositions, it lacks the usual compound meter and imagery associated with shepherds and rural life. The piece is part of Franck's Six Pièces for Large Organ and is dedicated to Cavaillé-Coll, the organ builder at St. Clotilde. Its simplicity in registrations, use of pedal points, and the absence of pastoral imagery make it a unique contribution to organ music. Franck's overall contributions to music and his innovative approach to composition have left a lasting legacy in the cultural sphere. Therefore, the romantic significance of Franck's Pastorale, Op. 19, lies in its innovative departure from traditional pastoral music conventions, contributing to the richness of the romantic musical repertoire.

It is a two-part composition with a prelude followed by a fugue. The prelude is a stately and joyful piece in the Baroque style. It is built around a series of themes, each repeated with slight variations, before culminating in a grand climax. The fugue is similarly constructed and features a clear exposition, with a main theme followed by several episodes. The piece has become one of Bach's most beloved works, due to its simple structure and its remarkable balance between prelude and fugue. It has been used in films, television, and other media, and is a staple of the organ repertoire.

The Six Fugues on the Name BACH, Op. 60 was Schumann's only work composed explicitly for the organ (or the pedal piano). Schumann composed this work in 1845, late in his career, as he turned to more conventional musical forms like the fugue with encouragement from his wife, Clara. The work uses the four-note B-A-C-H motive, which Schumann used to incorporate Bach's name into the music symbolically. The fugues demonstrate Schumann's mastery of the fugal form despite his reputation as a quintessential Romantic composer. Analysts have noted Schumann's innovative use of time and structure in the fugues, such as potential references to the golden section. In summary, Schumann's Op. 60 is an essential late-career work that showcases his command of the fugal form and innovative approaches to musical structure, all while incorporating the symbolic B-A-C-H motive.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1296215 Composed by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #886460. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1296215). Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch organist and composer who lived from April 1562 to October 16, 1621. He was born and died in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Sweelinck's first published works date from around 1592-94, and he composed a variety of music, including chansons and keyboard music. He was known for his keyboard playing and was a teacher to German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann.  Sweelinck's Echo Fantasias are significant for several reasons:Innovative composition: Echo Fantasias were a unique form of composition during Sweelinck's time, blending elements of traditional fantasias with passages dedicated to echo effects. This experimental approach showcased Sweelinck's creativity and willingness to push the boundaries of musical expression. Emphasis on the moment: Unlike Sweelinck's larger fantasias, the construction of Echo Fantasias was less strict, focusing more on the immediate musical experience rather than the overall design. This emphasis on the moment allowed for greater freedom and spontaneity in the performance of these pieces. Stylistic range: Echo Fantasias encompassed a wide range of styles, juxtaposing fantasia-like elements with passages dedicated to echo effects. This stylistic diversity added depth and complexity to Sweelinck's compositions, making them engaging and intriguing for both performers and listeners.
