The collection was to be called The Melting Pot as it combined cross-cultural elements of classical, popular, jazz, and blues styles. Already established as a composer of popular songs, Broadway musicals, and masterpieces like Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F, Gershwin’s frenetic musical activities and an early death intervened, and for various reasons—only three of the completed 5-7 preludes were published in 1927. By omission and circumstance, these three compositions have endured the test of time as Gershwin’s Three Preludes. This book presents idiomatic flute/guitar arrangements of Gershwin’s iconic Three Preludes. The original keys of the preludes were altered to accommodate drop-D guitar tuning and highlight the strengths and tessituras of the two instruments. The music is written in standard notation only and presented in guitar and flute scores, guitar accompaniment with extensive suggested fingering, and a pull-out flute solo part with guitar cues. Includes access to an outstanding online audio recording by The Cypress Duo, featuring flutist Amanda Hoke and author/guitarist Justin Hoke. Audiences are going to love hearing these preludes rendered by the flute and guitar, particularly “Prelude II”, in Gershwin’s words, “a sort of blues lullaby” that is familiar to many musicians and listeners alike.

Published by Kenneth Baird Music (A0.726449). The Adventurer: Suite for Eb Alto Saxophone and Piano, by Kenneth Baird, is a short (3:40) three-movement work in a bold contemporary style. The first movement is a joyful allegro that is filled with syncopation, harmonic surprises, and echoes of Gershwin and Bernstein. The second movement is an adagio that begins peacefully, adds a little more motion with a pentatonic melody, and then returns to a peaceful mood, concluding with a harmonic question. The suite then concludes with a lively and spirited dance-like allegro that alternates between 3/4 and 6/8, and may, for some, invoke images of a pirate-like nautical adventure, while also sounding somewhat like a Latin American dance tune. Requiring good technical agility and security with syncopated rhythms, the Adventurer: Suite for Eb Alto Saxophone is a refreshing change from the standard contest repertoire written for this intermediate level and will be a delight both for the performers (soloist and accompanist) and for the listener. An alternative, less technically challenging ending is provided for less-advanced performers. The composer notes that although the Adventurer was originally composed for trumpet, he feels it works equally well on the alto saxophone and that the saxophone version should not be construed as a lesser version than the original trumpet version. Great for performances at solo contests/competitions as well as at recitals. .

Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Antonio J. García has taken Haydn’s “London” Symphony as a point of departure for his London Town Fantasy for trombone and orchestra (or piano accompaniment), commissioned by the Charlottesville Symphony Society for the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra (Virginia). CUSO Music Director Kate Tamarkin sought a piece that would “showcase the trombone in a jazz ballad style and somehow reference the Haydn ‘London’ Symphony” that would follow it on the program, knowing that the first half of the concert would also include the Brahms “Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn.” She and trombone soloist Nathan Dishman suggested the title “London Town Fantasy,” envisioning a potential intersection with elements of George Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day (In London Town),” which seemed apt given a scheduled trip of García’s to London during the compositional process.
Listeners familiar with Haydn's “London” Symphony No. 104" will notice references starting at the first measure. And the violin part at the outset of the Symphony’s fourth movement, Allegro Spiritoso, offered the core of what became the melody to this Fantasy. The melody of the “bridge” section of the tune is crafted from the first seven measures of the opening theme of Haydn’s first movement (Allegro).
The use of “A Foggy Day” had to be more subtle, as copyright law must be observed, limiting the use of its actual melody within this piece. But Gershwin’s harmony actually is the harmonic basis under the melody of the Fantasy; and his devotees will recognize that when the soloist improvises medium-swing jazz with the orchestra, the chord progression is indeed entirely that of “A Foggy Day.” (An optional written-out solo is provided.)
Note that the string section is not asked to play swing eighth-notes at any time.
