Piano: Genaro Fernández.This work is a tribute to Thomas Mann, who published The Magic Mountain in 1924 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929.According to the author’s own words, the novel is a journey into decay which is lived in a mountain sanatorium dedicated to the cure of tuberculosis. But it is also the search for the idea of man, the concept of a future humanity through the prism of death.The uneven rhythmic pattern of the score (6+5+5/16 and 9+7/16) sifts the hope and generates restlessness. The generating complex {6,5,5,9,7} conforms the DNA of the whole work and is present in both formal structure and harmony or melody. The funerary sequence of the Gregorian, ‘Dies irae, dies illa’ (On the day of the wrath, that day), hangs throughout the piece until it becomes evident and dominates the spirit. The death precedes to a new life.---Esta obra é uma homenagem a Thomas Mann, quem publicou A Montanha Mágica em 1924 e recebeu o prémio Nobel de Literatura em 1929. Segundo as palavras do próprio autor, a novela é uma viagem à decadência que se vive num Sanatório de montanha dedicado a curar a tuberculose. Like a mosaic, the individual heterogenic episodes, lyrical, dance-like, hymnal and dramatic in turn, are combined through the permanent presence of the theme into a unified whole. The Gregorian Hallelujah is present as a type of mode in every bar of the work. The subdued introduction, characterised by the tritonically transposed structure of the original material, is followed by a sharply accentuated presentation of the theme in the bass. Over the partially engarlanded resolved variants, a first bitonal climax is reached (F minor and D major simultaneously). The dramatic development is repeated, interspersed with arioso interruptions, until the main idea is brought to culmination in brilliant instrumentation. The final chord consists of all notes of the theme.

On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows: '1st movement: Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of faith ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people. 2nd movement: In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the Luther rose which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, white is the colour of angels and ghosts, black stands for the pain of crucification: The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified. But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time. 3rd movement: The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The Danse macabre was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen from 1524 (Enchiridion from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant Media vita in morte sumus created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air. 4th movement: The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen, are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a perpetuum mobile, i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air. 5th movement: The Mighty Fortress, on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the Marseille anthem of the Reformation, Friedrich Engels the Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant birdcall version of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the ideals of freedom of Christians.'.

ORCHESTRAL SCORES ARE AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL The Te Deum for mixed choir and symphony orchestra by Lorenzo Ondarra (1931- 2012) was composed in 1998 at the request of the Provincial Curia of the Capuchin Friars, to commemorate the First Centenary, in 2000, of the Restoration of the Navarre, Cantabria and Aragón Capuchin Province. The main theme is the Gregorian melody of the Te Deum, a thanksgiving hymn, which combines the melody of the Tonus Solemnis and the Tonus Simplex. The Gregorian melody alternates between the choir and the orchestra, and develops in a free style as a paraphrase, with frequent melodic movements through parallel fourths and fifths: a typical feature of Ondarra’s compositional language. Modal features permeate the entire work, succeeding one another with tonal sections and even bitonal elements. Ondarra’s orchestration reflects an outstanding work, in which the wind instruments, together with the ubtlety of the woods and strings, plays an important role. Through its deep religiosity, the work combines recollection and the invitation to prayer with moments of brilliance in the treatment of the voices, which are exquisitely interwoven with the orchestral timbres. El material temático principal es la melodÃa gregoriana del Te Deum – himno de acción de gracias – alternando la melodÃa del Tonus Solemnis y del Tonus Simplex. Latin.As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning – over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain – on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear,and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.

Landscape paintings and printed illustrations of the Cross of Calvary were ubiquitous in Christian literature in the late 19th century, so it not surprising that allusions to such art are found in the texts of hymns. The three hymns heard in Sonata Hymnica No. 5 all evoke some sense of seeing, in a spiritual way, the scene of the Crucifixion. Sonata Hymnica No. 5 opens with a sturdy and rugged statement of When I Survey the Wond’rous Cross, written by Isaac Watts in 1707. This poem continues: On which the Prince of Glory dy’d, . . . See from His Head, his Hands, his Feet, Sorrow and Love flow mingled down! In the United States, music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) composed a tune in 1824 for singing Watts’ hymn. Named HAMBURG tune, it was an adapted form of some Gregorian chant in Church Mode I. This combination of poem and tune became very popular; so much so, that by the 1880s, elaborations of it appeared in print. The most enduring is the pairing of Watts’ poem and Mason’s tune with a simple camp meeting song, At the Cross, to be a refrain. It has the phrases, At the cross, where I first saw the light . . . It was there by faith I received my sight. The centerpiece of Sonata Hymnica No. 5 is the tune TOPLADY, the usual tune for singing Rock of Ages. This tune was composed in 1830 by Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), an associate of Lowell Mason in New York. He wrote hymns and hymn tunes, published hymnals, and worked tirelessly to elevate choral singing in churches. Hastings indicated that he intended his tune for singing Rock of Ages by naming it after the author of the hymn-poem, the English pastor Augustus Toplady (1740-1778). The Rev. A. B. Grosart wrote in a memorial that Toplady was no poet or inspired singer, but an impulsive, rash-spoken, reckless preacher who could nonetheless picture vanishing gleams of imaginative light in his hymnic verses. A better impression was gained by poet A. C. Benson (1862-1925), who, upon hearing Rock of Ages sung at William Gladstone’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1898 --- a rare State funeral attended by several members of the British Royal family --- wrote, To have written such words which should come home to people in moments of high, deep, and passionate emotion . . . there can hardly be anything worth doing better than that. This high compliment came from the poet who, a few years later, would write the words of Elgar’s Coronation Ode for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. A camp meeting song, a rash-spoken English pastor, two American music educators, a State funeral at Westminster Abbey --- such is the wide world of influence and inspiration of these three Scenes of Calvary.

His research focused on the Calabi Yau manifold. He left an astonishing musical legacy, unprecedently rich, diverse and impressive for his young age, including several large scale works as well as piano/orchestra miniatures, chamber music, pieces for piano solo etc. His unmistakingly personal compositional style could be easiest described as post-classical/post - tonal, and is instantly recognizable by its highly intrinsic, intellectually refined idiom of Scriabinesque, modernist/ avant guarde, New Complexity , later minimalist/repetitive music influences married with frequent appeals to historic techniques (contrapunctus, Gregorian plain chant, French harpsichordists, ethnic modality), a dense emotional drive and a profound sensitivity, all in the best of the resolutely post-Romantic tradition further enhanced with a super-human - as if machine induced - level of pianistic/structural difficulty, typically far beyond the one represented by the most demanding examples of, say, Godovsky's/Cziffra's transcriptions or Sorabji's works. (Jozef Kapustka, pianist)Aleksander Czarnecki on his scientific research: My research work concentrates on the modularity conjecture for Calabi-Yau manifolds according to which the Galois representation is isomorphic ( exact to the semisimplification and the finite number of Euler factors) to the Galois representation assigned to an automorphic form -equivalently the L-series of the Calabi-Yau manifold should be equal to the L-series of a certain modular form. The modularity conjecture has been extensively studied by many algebraic geometricians (Dieulefait, van Straten, Yuri, Schoen, Hulek, Verrill, Schuett, Meyer) however these studies have not resulted in producing a sufficiently representative number of examples of small level modular forms. In the best understood, rigid case of Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over the field of rational numbers, the modularity conjecture delivers from a more general Serre conjecture, as proven by Wirtemberger and Khare. Additionally, the modularity has been known a property only for certain particular Calabi-Yau varieties. For some non rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds (certain double octics) defined over rationals ( or more generally over particular number fields) the existence of modular or Hilbert modular forms has been hypothetically suggested. I am mainly interested in Frobenius polynomials of non-rigid double octics and have been extensively working with variants of Dwork's deformation method, monodromy and selected p-adic methods including algorithms by Kedlaya, Lauder, Tuitman et al. , Picard-Fuchs operators etc. (Aleksander Czarnecki, 2018)

In a large-scale art project, prisoners serving a life sentence at the Clairvaux high-security prison in north-eastern France were interviewed by the composer, who set their stories to music. The piece is incredibly dark, coloured by the innermost thoughts of individuals who know they will never again be free, people who are slipping into oblivion. Clairvaux wasn't always a prison, though - it was formerly an important monastery. Established by St. Bernhard in 1115 and closed in connection with the French Revolution, Clairvaux is a mythic place. For some, it is an abbey where thousands of monks voluntarily chose the path of saints, plunging themselves into the blessed silence of darkness. For others, it is a prison, the sheer name of which inspires terror and generates horrific images. My intention was that we, with our concert, would create a bridge between the present and the past, between incarceration and voluntary solitude. So I sought out the historical sources for our earliest notated music, from the French abbey of Solemn, and composed a variety of versions based on Gregorian themes. Latin.Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726102). “O Come, O Come Emmanuel†are the opening words of John Mason Neale’s (1818-1866) translation of the Medieval text, “Veni, Emmanuel,†with music arranged by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890), for The Hymnal Noted (London, 1856). The text of this most famous of Advent hymns is taken from various “‘O’ Antiphons,†verses sung or recited before and after the Magnificat during the evening Vespers service in the last week of Advent. Each antiphon is a name of Christ, and together they echo the foretelling of the long-expected Messiah by the prophet Isaiah.The origin of the music is uncertain. Latin.Almost 40 compositions, half of which written for accompanied and unaccompanied choir, can currently be found in the catalogue of works by the young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born in 1992). After winning several national composition prizes, she was awarded the 1st prize of the 13th International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 for Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed a cappella choir. The complex sacred a cappella choral work is based on the eponymous Gregorian chorale (Psalm 89:2). This Latin choral piece is characterized by three main structures: by aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales which are emphasized by sustained organum-like notes from the Gregorian chorale melody, on the one hand, by Renaissance-style polyphony combined with modern harmony, on the other hand, and finally, by long static chords merging in space and harmony. A wonderfully mystical, spherical composition which, by means of ad libitum passages marked in the musical text, even gives the performer the opportunity to interpret the piece individually.

The Lord will sit on his royal throne for ever; the Lord will bless his people in peace.A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSERWhen Fr. Scott Haynes, SJC, sent me the words and original chant material for ‘Sedebit Dominus Rex’ it immediately conjured a vision of a medieval King seated on a throne, grave and powerful. But the figure surprisingly descends to His people and blesses them with peace.Having worked with St. John Cantius’ Saint Cecilia choir on ‘Missa Chicagoenis’ in June 2017, I know these splendid voices have a wide dramatic range, so I wrote expressive music for them, and for Corrado Cavalli, I wanted an interesting organ part with lots of colour.The original Gregorian chant melody presents a pentatonic gesture, so I used that idea, and, combined with some medieval cadences, some Duruflé-inspired counterpoint, and a sprinkling of Wagnerian harmony, I painted the musical picture with an ecstatic, twenty-first- century ending.
