German.Es war 1996, als mir Christoph Poppen, der damalige Leiter des Münchener Kammerorchesters, von einem kuriosen Konzert in Münsing (Ammerland) erzählte: während eines seiner Konzerte mit dem Orchester in der dortigen Kirche gab es, für alle hör- und sichtbar, eines der größten Unwetter, das die Region je gesehen hatte. Dabei schlug der Blitz ein in eine Art Wahrzeichen des Ortes, eine mehrere Jahrhunderte alte Linde. Unter den Zuhörern damals: die dort lebende Dichterin und Schriftstellerin Diana Kempff. Sie war unmittelbar erschüttert vom Tod der Linde und schrieb unter diesem Eindruck einige Gedichte. Christoph Poppen wiederum war – wie in vielen anderen Zusammenhängen auch – genialer Vermittler und stellte alsbald den Kontakt zu mir her. Die Idee: am Ort des Geschehens, in der Münsinger Kirche, solle ein Jahr später die Uraufführung einer Art Requiem für diesen Baum, der so vieles „gesehen“ hatte, erklingen. Im Rahmen der Holzhauser Musiktagen mit den Texten von Diana Kempff und meiner (noch zu schreibenden) Musik. Es gab bald eine wunderbare, sehr intensive Begegnung von Diana Kempff und mir, bei der sie etwas für Schriftsteller nicht gerade Typisches tat: sie stellte mir frei, aus den vorliegenden Gedichten nach Belieben lediglich Teile, sogar nur Zeilenfragmente zu verwenden und auch die Reihenfolge nach meinen Bedürfnissen anzuordnen und zu gestalten. Sie begriff sofort (und wünschte!), dass durch die Musik ohnehin etwas Drittes, etwas ganz Anderes entstehen würde. Die Tatsache, dass wir Monate später eine sichtlich bewegte Diana Kempff auf die Bühne holen durfte, freute uns alle besonders. Ihre Lyrik ist Ausdruck einer offenkundig zutiefst gequälten Seele und kommt uns oft wunderlich-versponnen entgegen. Einer zerbrechlichen Zartheit steht eine bisweilen fast brutale Härte unversöhnlich gegenüber. Das Schubert’sche „Fremd bin ich eingezogen“ gilt für sie in besonderer Weise und äußert sich in ihren Versen in einer Nähe zu allem Fremden (trotz des gleichzeitigen manischen Umkreisens des Eigenen und der eigenen Erinnerung), Abseitigen und auch (bei aller gleichzeitigen Skepsis) Übernatürlichen. Dieses geisterhaft-spukige Element versuchte ich durch meine Textauswahl und mit musikalischen Mitteln in diesen nun „Sieben Abgesängen“ zu verdeutlichen. Das erste Stück ist eine karge Studie über das Verrinnen der Zeit, das Nichts; das Zweite beschwört den Regen (den heilbringenden) herbei, der dann später – wenngleich mit entsetzlicher Wirkung – auch kommt. Den dritten Abgesang habe ich „Tanz der toten Seelen“ betitelt; es ist ein Zwiefacher, der jedoch durch seine düster-halbseidene „Wiener“ Chromatik alles Liebenswürdig-Oberbayerische längst verloren hat. Das klanglich vielleicht avancierteste und dichteste Stück ist der vierte Abgesang, der ganz aus der Perspektive der Linde selbst erzählt wird. Der fünfte Abgesang zu den Worten „Und wenn der Tod so kommen mag“ ist im Stile einer traurigen Volksweise bewusst schlicht gehalten. Während der sechste Satz in seinem expressionistischen Gestus nicht ungefährlich das Monodram streift, ist es schließlich die Seele (die ausgehauchte, die weiterexistierende?), die wörtlich den letzten Abgesang über die Bäume und die Seelen prägt. Diana Kempffs Gedichte, der Enthusiasmus Christoph Poppens, die phantastischen Uraufführungs-Interpreten, allen voran die Sängerin Juliane Banse, haben mich zur Komposition dieser „Sieben Abgesänge auf eine tote Linde“ angeregt. Die „Sieben Abgesänge“ sind nunmehr auch eine Erinnerung an die erst jüngst verstorbene Diana Kempff. Jörg Widmann, im Juni 2008.

Disziplin, Ordnung, Sauberkeit, Gruppenkonformes und normales Rollenverhalten (die Mädchen sorgen für die Harmonie und das Kochen, die Jungen können gut rechnen, sind handwerklich begabt und haben das Sagen) sind die besten Heilmittel gegen die Entgleisungen der Erwachsenenwelt und werden von den Kindern exemplarisch durchexerziert. Aber auch unter den Kindern gibt es Außenseiter: sie kommen von außerhalb des Dorfes, sind Fremde mit niederem sozialen Status (Kesselflicker), stehlen, sind aufsässig, wortbrüchig, voll krimineller Energie und müssen im Sinne der Gruppe diszipliniert werden. Da dies jedoch nicht gelingt, bleibt nur die Ausweisung aus dem Dorf, abgemildert durch die Gabe einiger Brote, damit die Ausgewiesenen nicht hungern müssen. Die Musik des in seinen Absichten eindeutigen Stückes ist recht jugendwirksam aufgemacht.

From the Swiss Guards in 18th-Century Paris) Der Arabi Nr. 1 (Trad) Arranged by Des McNutty The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as Die drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Some Fastnacht Fanfares contains historical melodies from the Cliques' repertoire arranged for Natural Trumpet Ensemble. The Signalkorps can have many players. The parts are in the low, principale register; ideal for newcomers and dilettantes. The ensemble parts require more skill and need only one player on each. s'Läggerli is used with kind permission from the Märtplatz-Clique Basel 1923. The similarity of the other melodies to trumpet calls may not be a total coincidence. Ein altes Lied, bei dem ich bei aller Recherche nicht herausfinden konnte, woher es eigentlich kommt.Wenn ich an dieses Lied denke, fühle ich mich wieder als wäre ich elf oder zwölf Jahre alt. Es kommen Erinnerungen hoch, wie ich in der alten, engen Kirche unserer Gemeinde neben meinem Opa sitze und er und all die anderen älteren Männer dieses Lied voller Inbrunst und Freude am Sonntagmorgen schmettern. Es war eine herrliche Zeit, nie habe ich ein Kirchenlied fröhlicher gesungen gehört.Aus dieser Erinnerung und Nostalgie heraus entstand bei mir vor Jahren der Wunsch, einen Chorsatz zu diesem Lied zu schreiben. Die erste Strophe beginnt standesgemäß (Es ist Sonntag, ihr BRÜDER) mit Männergesang, der sich bis zu einer Vierstimmigkeit entwickelt. Die Frauen begleiten diesen. Ab der zweiten Strophe übernimmt der Sopran die Melodieführung und das Lied entwickelt sich inkl. zweier Tonartwechsel hin zu einem finalen Ehre sei Gott in der Höh!.

These alterations were designed for concert performances and included varying dynamics and omitting certain instruments on repeated strains to expand the range of the musical textures, as well as adding unscripted percussion accents for dramatic emphasis at key points in the music. Although Sousa never documented his performance techniques himself, several players who worked extensively with Sousa provided directions for his frequently performed marches, most notably cornetist Frank Simon. Sousa continued to conduct many of his earlier marches later in his career with these unique alterations, but he rarely returned to several of the marches composed between 1873 and 1880. Although no written confirmation exists for how Sousa might have performed these earliest compositions, select elements of his typical performance practices can also be applied to these marches. “Our Flirtation†is the earliest march for which Simon documented Sousa’s common adjustments in performance. The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa appears in chronological order and is based on some of the earliest known sources for each composition. These newly edited full scores correct many mistakes and inconsistencies found in the parts of early publications; however, all remaining markings and the original scoring are preserved. Additionally, the alterations traditionally employed by the United States Marine Band in performance are incorporated throughout; either those specifically documented by Sousa’s musicians or changes modeled on the customary practices of “The March King.†Performance practices that deviate from the original printed indications are described below and appear in [brackets] in the score. In many instances these indications appear side-by-side with the original markings. An open diamond marked with an accent in the cymbal part indicates that the cymbal player should let that accent ring for an additional beat before rejoining the bass drum part. Second strain (m. 21-38): The dynamic should drop to piano first time through with piccolo, E-flat clarinet, cornets/trumpets, and trombones tacet first time. Additionally, all clarinets should play down one octave as indicated by the cued notes. All instruments rejoin fortissimo and at the original octave in the first ending. A percussion accent may be added in m. 29 the second time. Schubert seems to have composed this piece as a song-setting. This is because he wanted to portray a poignant emotional event from a poem. The poem was Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. Consequently, this song became an integral part of Schubert's Song cycle. Therefore the cycle is called: the Lady of the Lake. In the poem, Ellen Douglas is the Lady of the Lake. The lake is probably Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands. First of all, Ellen goes with her father to stay in the Goblin's cave. They go because he earlier refused to join in a rebellion against King James. Roderick Dhu, the chief of the rebellious Alpine Clan, marches up the mountain with his army. But before the battle, he, first of all, hears Ellen singing. She is singing a prayer calling for help from the Virgin Mary. Schubert's piece was first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria.  Schubert dedicated the arrangement to her, and as a result, she became famous as the lady of the lake.The incipit of Ellen's song is Ave Maria which is Latin for Hail Mary. It seems like this similarity led Schubert to adapt the melody to accommodate the Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. Consequently, the Latin version of Ave Maria finally became more famous than the original so that consequently many believe he wrote the Latin version first. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive.
