In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship. At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning. Thomas Coker, August 27, 2015

The lyrics come from the Defense of Fort Mchenry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. To Anacreon in Heaven (or The Anacreontic Song), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. This setting, renamed The Star-Spangled Banner, soon became a well-known U.S. patriotic song. With a range of 19 semitones, it is known for being very difficult to sing. Although the poem has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today. This is Joseph Pugh's brass quintet arrangement of the song.

Et à ce jour, nous n’avons aucune trace d’autres œuvres composées par Tolstoï.<br>Vers la fin des années 90, la BBC a diffusé une intervention de Isaiah Berlin (philosophe, président de la British Academy) qui parlait de l’œuvre de Tolstoï « La Sonate à Kreutzer », l'histoire d'un homme obsessionnellement jaloux de sa femme, qui tue le violoniste avec qui elle joue juste parce qu’il suppose l’infidélité de son épouse. En aparté de l’analyse, il tint ces propos : « il était très musicien, Tolstoï ! Il a écrit une valse - [...] J'ai entendu dire qu'il l’a joué. Elle est éditée dans un livre. Ma femme l’a joué pour moi, c'est très simple ». <br>A partir de là, cette valse a été retrouvée, manuscrite, en appendice d’un ouvrage russe intitulé « Leo Tolstoy and Music » (N. Gusev et Gol'denveizer). Lors d’un entretien, Gol’denveizer en parle comme ceci : « Dans sa jeunesse, le conte Lev Nikolaïevitch (Tolstoï) a composé une valse pour le Piano. Lorsque, en 1906, j’étais à Lasnaïa Poliana (Grand domaine familiale des Tolstoï où l’écrivain finit sa vie, et où il y repose), Lev Nikolaïevitch l’a joué devant nous. Nous avons effectué alors le relevé. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6218). This is the name given to the ancient tales and legends of Scandinavia, mostly drawn up in Iceland. The term itself is of Germanic origin, form the verb 'sagen' which means to say, to recount. The title also has to do with what is said, what is recounted, in a musical epic of today. Three of these pieces, Sagas 2, 4 and 6, have the particularity of being improvisations. In Saga 1, the instrument seems to awaken out of a dream of which the two opposing elements gradually become ordered. Pedal staccati soon take control and come to predominate as they build up while, in a spirit of contradiction, various solo steps, Cornet, Cromore, unfold their melismas. The dream then reestablishes itself, this time for good. The second Saga is a sombre, frenetic dance based on groups of five semiquaves. It dies away, then, after a long silence, a note emerges, and this lone note, on three different solo stops, beaten, hunted by its two neighbouring notes in increasingly animated accents, anacruses and appoggiaturas, disappears, giving way to the sombre dance which then broadens out. It is interrupted all of a sudden by the irritated, exasperated, fuming tone of that harshness that overdoes itself and vanishes. The sombre dance appears one last time, letting itself go into paroxym. The third Saga unfolds as a very ancient chant, the memory of an Ossianic chant of the earliest times. The fourth Saga develops the lyricism of a tale to be told. But in midway comes a sort of destructive outburst of which the ever tighter links give way for a moment to pure narrativity, which, after a few upsets, ends the piece with the memory of great danger overcome by candour. The fifth Saga is a kind of quiet walk, interspersed with a few controversies, interceptions and demonstrations that are rather more lively. The sixth Saga develops a kind of theme in runs, whose constantly rhythmic rebounding might bring out the idea of apologetic or exalted acclamation.Jean Guillou (*1930) gilt als einer der bedeutenden Organisten und Orgelkomponisten der Gegenwart. Key wrote his poem on September 14, 1814 while witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812, inspired by the large American flag (“star-spangled bannerâ€) flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory. Le cas le plus célèbre est celui du galop infernal (nom d'un pas de danse), issu de l’œuvre Orphée aux enfers (1858), que l'on se permet souvent de renommer French Cancan. Cette transformation est faite de manière abusive, car l’appellation de French Cancan n'existait pas à l’époque où Jacques Offenbach composait.<br> Le cancan est une danse populaire, inventée au début du XIXème siècle. Il était à la base exécutée en couple dans les bals et les cabarets, et faisait partie des danses très mal vues par les familles mondaines. Le nom Cancan, attribué semble t’il à l’origine parce que les danseurs imitaient la démarche et le cri de l’oie, est ensuite devenu, par une transformation touristique d'origine anglaise (coincoin / cancan) le French Cancan.<br>Cette danse donne l'image d'une société parisienne frivole, proche de celle décrite de façon caricaturale dans La vie parisienne. Les femmes sont vite seules à le danser, en rang, face au public, et les nombreux pas de pattes en l’air laissent souvent apparaître les dessous raffinés de l’époque…que le peintre Toulouse-Lautrec aura plaisir à illustrer. Ses Quarante huit romances réparties dans huit cahiers sont créées au fil de sa vie dans les moments rares de solitude. Elles sont les reflets d’une page d’album sentimental de son quotidien. Six des huit cahiers sont publiés à partir de 1832 en huit fascicules par les soins du compositeur, chez l’éditeur londonien Novello. Les deux dernières paraîtront après sa mort. Quelques unes ont une appellation comme Morceau pour enfants, Marche funèbre, Chant du gondolier vénitien, Chant du printemps, Chant du dévidoir, Chant populaire, Chant du chasseur. L'opus 30 est dédié à Elise Von Woringen. Il est le deuxième recueil de romances sans paroles. Il comprend six petits morceaux très poétiques comme dans l'opus 19, représentant le premier cahier, qui est l'un des plus connus. Composé entre 1833 et 1834 à Dusseldörf, ce deuxième cahier est édité à Paris en 1835 chez Mori et Lavenu. La parution des six autres romances de Mendelssohn a reçu un très bon accueil en Allemagne par ses contemporains, ce qui a suggéré à Schumann d'écrire une très belle critique dans son journal, la Neue Zeitschrift für Musik : « Qui ne s'est jamais assis au crépuscule devant un piano droit ( un piano à queue ferait trop cérémonieux) et n'a chanté inconsciemment, en pleine improvisation, une douce mélodie ? Si l'on peut par hasard lier aux deux mains l'accompagnement et la mélodie, et surtout si l'on est un Mendelssohn, alors naissent les plus belles romances sans paroles ... C'est limpides comme le soleil qu'elles se présentent à nos regards ». La Romance sans parole n°12 « Allegretto Tranquillo » est intitulée aussi Barcarolle. Son écriture pianistique nous amène toujours à vouloir chanter le thème principal qui est proche de l'écriture du lieder. Sa structure formelle est elle même composée comme un lied : ABA. Elle se distingue par un chant très pur d'une grande expressivité ce qui nous évoque l'idée d'un air de gondolier vénitien. A 6/8, en tonalité de fa dièse mineur, la mélodie flotte sur un rythme ternaire qui donne un effet de tourbillon langoureux par l'utilisation d'innombrables ornementations vocales. Cette romance achève le recueil, mais finalement nous ouvre les portes de notre imaginaire où l'on peut entrevoir une libre promenade sur les eaux. Partition + Biographie + Notes sur l'oeuvre

Elle a probablement des racines très anciennes, on en retrouve des traces dans le culte des dieux antiques. Particulièrement vivace, cette musique, accompagnée d'une danse effrénée, était jouée au cours de cérémonies qui pouvaient durer des journées entières, cérémonies qui avait pour mission de guérir ceux que l'on croyait être victimes de morsure d'une araignée légendaire, la tarentule. Ces cérémonies populaires ont quasiment disparu au milieu du XXème siècle.<br><br> Des compositeurs comme Gioacchino Rossini ont repris la tarentelle à leur manière. Cette Tarentelle Napolitaine, dite La Danza, a été composée pour un orchestre symphonique et ténor soliste. Mais elle a été reprise et arrangée de nombreuses fois par divers ensembles instrumentaux (ensembles de guitares), et chantés par exemple par des mezzo-soprano. Pourtant c'est une œuvre dont il n'est pas complètement l'auteur. Il s'agit en réalité d'un arrangement écrit par son biographe italien Remo Giazotto. Selon ce dernier, on aurait découvert en 1945, au milieu des ruines de la bibliothèque de Dresde bombardée pendant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, une «Sonate en trio» composée par Tomaso Albinoni. Remo Giazotto se serait basé sur le mouvement lent de cette sonate pour écrire l'Adagio, qui nous paraît si familier à présent puisqu'il est cité dans plusieurs musiques populaires, ainsi que dans des bandes originales de films.<br>Cette œuvre au tempo lent a pour introduction une mélodie à l’orgue soutenue par les violoncelles et les contrebasses en pizzicato. Vient ensuite le thème en tutti puis une cadence effectuée par le violon soliste accompagné par l’orgue. On reprend ensuite le début de l'œuvre, puis le tutti rentre dans un élan tragique. L’œuvre se termine par un court solo de violon, toujours soutenu par le tapis sonore de l’orgue et de l’orchestre. Transcription pour piano + Biographie + Notes sur l'oeuvre

Il les publie en 1723 à Cöthen. Ce sont des ouvrages didactiques. Avec ces trente inventions Bach vise surtout à instruire et à mettre en place une méthode pour les enfants. Il exprime sa pensée en préface dans un des manuscrits autographes des Inventions : « Méthode sincère destinée aux amateurs, aux apprentis pour leur apprendre à jouer correctement à deux parties, à procéder ultérieurement juste et bien avec deux ou trois parties obligées, à avoir de bonnes inventions, acquérir une manière chantante de jouer, ainsi qu'un avant goût de la composition. » Ainsi les morceaux sont groupés suivant l'ordre des demi-tons de la gamme et non pas selon la complication croissante des tonalités. Chaque invention a un seul motif thématique. Ce motif peut être agrandi en thème et par la suite, mené en contrepoint avec d'autres petits motifs et la recherche d'un équilibre rigoureux dans chaque invention est une grande difficulté qui peut dépasser la compréhension d'un pianiste novice. Bach intègre dans ces morceaux toute une panoplie de procédés techniques comme le canon, le contrepoint, la complexité de la composition nécessitant l'utilisation de la pédale harmonique et la façon d'ornementer un motif thématique. On peut entrevoir dans ces Inventions une manière de synthétiser sa méthode de travail et une initiation à l'écriture musicale. Sur un rythme binaire à 3/4, Bach montre un côté joyeux et léger dans ce morceau. Un canon à l'octave est le point central de cette Invention n°8. Ce passage est entrecoupé de moments musicaux qui se présentent sous forme de courbes mélodiques à la tierce entre les deux mains ou de marches harmoniques descendantes. Pas une note, ni phrase mélodique, ni procédé d'écriture qui ne soient indispensables dans cette miniature. Rien de superflu n'encombre les dessins mélodiques. Chaque pièce, vendue à l’unité, a fait l’objet d’un travail éditorial attentif, tant sur le plan de l’établissement du texte musical que de sa gravure, afin de garantir aux musiciens les conditions indispensables aux plaisirs tirés du commerce fréquent de ces œuvres.<br><br>Les partitions sont proposées sous la forme d’ouvrages traditionnels (feuillets papier), et disponibles également par téléchargement.<br><br><br><br>Jean Sebastien Bach a écrit 15 Inventions à deux voix (BWV 772-786) et 15 Inventions à trois voix (BWV 787-801) qu'il a nommées Sinfonias. Il les publie en 1723 à Cöthen. Ce sont des ouvrages didactiques. Avec ces trente inventions Bach vise surtout à instruire et à mettre en place une méthode pour les enfants. Il exprime sa pensée en préface dans un des manuscrits autographes des Inventions : « Méthode sincère destinée aux amateurs, aux apprentis pour leur apprendre à jouer correctement à deux parties, à procéder ultérieurement juste et bien avec deux ou trois parties obligées, à avoir de bonnes inventions, acquérir une manière chantante de jouer, ainsi qu'un avant goût de la composition. » Ainsi les morceaux sont groupés suivant l'ordre des demi-tons de la gamme et non pas selon la complication croissante des tonalités. Chaque invention a un seul motif thématique. Ce motif peut être agrandi en thème et par la suite, mené en contrepoint avec d'autres petits motifs et la recherche d'un équilibre rigoureux dans chaque invention est une grande difficulté qui peut dépasser la compréhension d'un pianiste novice. Bach intègre dans ces morceaux toute une panoplie de procédés techniques comme le canon, le contrepoint, la complexité de la composition nécessitant l'utilisation de la pédale harmonique et la façon d'ornementer un motif thématique. On peut entrevoir dans ces Inventions une manière de synthétiser sa méthode de travail et une initiation à l'écriture musicale. Etablie sur une mesure ternaire à 3/8, la celulle thématique navigue dans cette invention n°4 tout autour de vagues ascendantes et descendantes. Sa réalisation au niveau de sa composition est assez complexe. Il y a une succession d'inversions de voix, suivies ou précédées d'épisodes canoniques et de marches harmoniques. Bach révèle son aisance dans l'art de la composition, ce qui oblige le pianiste à réfléchir sur son interprétation pour mettre en évidence les différentes harmonies qui sont, pour certaines, des éclairages fugitives d'une frémissante sensibilité.
