"Carol Of The Bells"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano collection, "In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas"

Album & Songbook review by: Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com):
I have discovered a real wealth of great solo piano Christmas CDs this year! Isadar’s In Search For the Meaning of Christmas definitely falls into this category! Thoughtful, introspective, and a bit moody, Isadar’s arrangements are true to the carols (with some small melody changes in “Bring a Torch” and “Carol of the Bells” that bother me just a little) and still seem very personal. “Bring a Torch”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, and “I Saw Three Ships” are given a lighthearted, joyful treatment. “Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)”, “What Child Is This?”, “The Coventry Carol”, and “Sing We Now of Christmas” are all minor, somber, reverent pieces, and all four are given loving arrangements that keep the dark, mysterious nature of the songs and reflect Isadar’s own sensibilities. “Carol of the Bells” and Isadar's take on Liz Story’s arrangement of “Greensleeves” are energetic without losing all abandon. “Silent Night” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” present us with a very cold, deep solitude - both feel like late night with moonlight reflecting off the snow. Both are moody, but very beautifully so. George Winston’s “December” is one of my all-time favorite holiday albums, and I feel In Search For the Meaning of Christmas holds up exceptionally well next to it. This is an excellent collection of Christmas music, and I highly recommend it!
In Search For the Meaning of Christmas is the companion songbook to Isadar’s 1999 solo piano release by the same name. Meticulously transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing, the music is faithful to the recording in every way (except for the pianist - YOU!). The scores are clear, concise, and easy to read, and also include chord indications for improvisation or the use of instruments other than or in addition to the piano. Isadar’s arrangements cover a whole range of emotions, from very dark and somber to joyful and buoyant. All of the pieces from the CD are here, including Isadar’s homage to Liz Story and her beautiful version of “Greensleeves.” My personal favorites of the eleven songs in this book are the bright and cheerful “Bring A Torch,” “What Child Is This?”, “Greensleeves,” the darkly gorgeous “The Coventry Carol,” and “Sing We Now of Christmas.” Other titles that I really like are “Children Go Where I Send Thee/The Holly and the Ivy,” “Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)," “Carol of the Bells,” and the effervescent “Three Ships.” “Silent” (Silent Night) and “Midnight” (It Came Upon a Midnight Clear) are a bit too dark for my own holiday tastes, but are interesting and very personal arrangements. This book will make a great addition to your holiday sheet music collection and is available from isadar.com and amazon.com.
Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more...
Also available as sheet music in physical songbooks, digital downloads, as well as software for Yamaha Disklavier player-pianos.

"Greensleeves 2012"

Sounds like: Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas," Liz Story's "The Gift," George Winston's "December," legacy Windham Hill solo piano artists, "A Winter's Solstice" compilations.
Note: “Greensleeves 2012” is a revisited and evolved arrangement which like my earlier version, was inspired by – and also pays ‘homage’ to – Liz Story’s brilliant take on this timeless piece.

Fresh on the heels of his highly acclaimed chart-topping CD, Reconstructed, Isadar gifts us with a sparkling new album of holiday-themed instrumental music for solo piano, entitled “O Christmas.” Given the proximity to his recent release, one might assume that this one was quickly produced, but in reality O Christmas has been 7 years in the making. Various circumstances including other recording projects, a segue into the field of video production, and a cross country move from NYC to the west coast and later back again, created delays with the completion of the album. But as they say, “good things come to those who wait.”
One of the most interesting things about this album is the fact that the selections are traditional Christmas songs, yet some were chosen because they are less well known, or “off the beaten path” as Isadar characterizes them. This follows the pattern set by his 1999 Christmas album “In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas,” yet this new CD mines even deeper in its quest for interesting and unusual choices.
The album begins with a track called “Good Christian Men.” Steeped in history, the song dates back to 14th century Germany and its Latin title was originally “In Dulci Jubilo” before it was translated into English in the 1800’s. Isadar’s interpretation creates a lively and festive air that makes a perfect portal to the recording. The high-spirited mood continues on the next song, “Teddy Bears Picnic,” which although not technically a Christmas song, has been interwoven by Isadar with “March Of The Toys” to tie it in with the holidays – a clever arrangement of these intriguing melodies. One of the more well-known carols on the album is “O Christmas Tree” and is sure to have listeners humming along with it’s familiar refrain.
A track entitled “Still” is an innovative rendition of the classic “Still, Still, Still” which Isadar has put his own spin on, or as he jokingly puts it “jazzed up shamelessly.” No such liberties were taken on the classic “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” however. This song provides a showcase for Isadar’s accomplished grand piano work, featuring lush left hand arpeggios creating a strong foundation for his more delicate right hand melodies to dance upon – a powerful and moving combination. Another of the less well known, yet equally inspiring tunes is a Puerto Rican carol entitled “Song Of The Wise Men.” It has been said that: “Christmas is, above all, a children’s holiday, and many hymns are addressed to children, reminding them that the real reason for the sugarplums and Christmas trees is the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.” This theme is well reflected in Isadar’s choice of “O Come Little Children,” based on a carol from the 1800’s.
Among my favorite tracks on the album are the wistful strains of “Greensleeves 2012,” which Isadar interprets with elegance and grandeur and also pays ‘homage’ to Liz Story’s brilliant take on this enduring composition. This is followed by a rendition of “Masters In This Hall,” which can best be described as, well… “masterful.” The song dates back to the sixteenth century, and is another of the less well-known tunes that Isadar has chosen to feature. The album draws to a close with Isadar invoking artistic license on what is perhaps one of the most unique and liberal versions of a classic carol heard here yet. Based on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” Isadar characterizes it as “an uninhibited melancholy arrangement.” While I don’t know if “melancholy” is the word I would use to describe it, it does have a pensive quality and is presented more as a nocturne than usual lively carol it is known as. I really liked the interpretation and respect Isadar’s creativity and distinctive rendering of the song.
“O Christmas” is an exceptional holiday collection, not only for Isadar’s elegant grand piano artistry, but as well for the interesting and sometimes unexpected repertoire contained within. Like ornaments on a tree, the songs adorn the album, enhancing its beauty with their diversity, individuality, and timelessness. Given the well-deserved accolades and popularity of Isadar’s distinctive piano style, I’m sure that fans will want to include “O Christmas” in their collection and make it a part of their holiday tradition.

Traditional sailor's song arranged for German Band with two clarinets, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and optional drums. Includes a full score and all parts. Key of F. 81 measures, 20pages.Barnacle Bill the Sailor is an American drinking song adapted from Bollocky Bill the Sailor, a traditional folk song originally titled Abraham Brown. The first printed version of the song is in the public domain book Immortalia (1927). Later versions feature the eponymous Barnacle Bill, a fictional character loosely based on a 19th-century San Francisco sailor and Gold Rush miner named William Bernard. Versions are also known in England and Scotland from the early twentieth century. One version of Barnacle Bill refers to an exchange between Bill and a fair young maiden. Each verse opens with inquiries by the maiden, sung by women, or by men in falsetto, and continues with Bill's profane responses sung by men.Barnacle Bill the Sailor (Roud 4704) is an American drinking song adapted from Bollocky Bill the Sailor, a traditional folk song originally titled Abraham Brown.[1]There are several versions of the bawdy song in the Gordon Inferno Collection at the Library of Congress folklife archive. The first printed version of the song is in the public domain book Immortalia (1927). Later versions feature the eponymous Barnacle Bill, a fictional character loosely based on a 19th-century San Francisco sailor and Gold Rush miner named William Bernard.[2] Versions are also known in England and Scotland from the early twentieth century. The earliest known recording is an expurgated adaptation by Carson Robison and Frank Luther in 1928. This version was also recorded on May 21, 1930 by Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael with Carson Robison on vocals and released as a Victor 78, V-38139-A and 25371. In 1996 it was released on CD on the album Bix Beiderbecke 1927–1930.[3] According to Philip R. Evans, Bix Beiderbecke's biographer, in the second chorus of this recording, violinist Joe Venuti can be heard singing Barnacle Bill the Shit-head, either to express his attitude toward the record producer, or typical of his wacky sense of humor. Esten Spurrier, a friend of Beiderbecke's, is quoted by Evans as saying that Beiderbecke told him he could not believe the record would be pressed and had felt that it had been done just for laughs. Beiderbecke cut loose on the tune with what is believed to be one of his finest cornet solos. John Valby (aka Dr. Dirty) also recorded the song. The tune has inspired a Fleischer Studios Betty Boop cartoon and two films, as well as the name of a rock on Mars. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five (then known as The Elks Rendezvous Band) recorded a clean version in 1938.[4] In the first Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Popeye the Sailor (1933), Barnacle Bill was used as the recurring theme for the Bluto character. A later Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Beware of Barnacle Bill (1935), is a mock operetta based around a toned-down version of the song.Example of lyrics[edit]One version of Barnacle Bill refers to an exchange between Bill and a fair young maiden. Each verse opens with inquiries by the maiden, sung by women, or by men in falsetto, and continues with Bill's profane responses sung by men.

The word DADGAD refers to the names of the notes on the open strings of one of many alternate tunings for the guitar, one that is very popular with acoustic guitar players. It has a wonderfully warm resonance, allowing you to play simple single-note melodies, yet still fill out the sound of the instrument. The twenty Christmas carols presented here form a perfect introduction to playing guitar in DADGAD tuning. The melodies are presented without added bass notes or chords - just those great melodies, once heard, never forgotten. This means you already know what the tune is supposed to sound like, leaving you to concentrate on playing the notes on the right string and fret, and for the right length of time. This book is the easiest of Rob Mackillop's DADGAD books. It assumes you know how to hold and tune the guitar, and play some notes and a few simple chords. The book includes a Technique Primer to help get you up and running, plus the essential chord diagrams for playing in DADGAD tuning. Book includes access to online audio featuring Rob MacKillop's performance of each piece.

Https://revelationandrestoration.comHow can you face your darkest hour head on without collapsing from fear? With the Light that the shadows can't deny, the Name that cannot be overcome. This modern worship anthem to the Name of Jesus has ministered to my heart during the darkness of the trials and troubles of life ever since I first heard it in the livestreamed worship services of The Worship Center in Krakow, Poland (https://www.facebook.com/wrshpcntr). I pray this arrangement is a blessing to you, your ensemble, and all who hear.Appropriate for any modern church service, this arrangement is meant to be flexible, allowing for any size ensemble (playing according to the melody and chord symbols) and the spontaneity of the Holy Ghost. Either or both choruses, as well as the bridge, may be repeated as many times as led. After either chorus, the song may also continue to the bridge or a verse. I believe the high chorus and the bridge are both great places to end the song, so this arrangement allows for either ending. Just let the Spirit lead you--and be sure to signal your ensemble members :-)God bless, in Jesus' Name!--Kris Jim ChristianP.S. Nicole Elyse DiPaolo #916286. Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.1328293). The first of its kind, and the first entry in the Accessible Accompaniments library’s collection of small-hand-optimized song literature publications, this is Richard Strauss’s beloved “Zueignung,†from Acht Gedichte, op. 10 (1885), optimized (but not simplified) for the needs of collaborative pianists with small hands. “Small†is generally understood to be just an octave in span, with limited capacity to grab chord tones within a blocked octave aside from the occasional inner fifth. This edition was inspired by Boosey’s excellent small-hand edition of Frank Bridge’s “Love Went A-Riding†(erroneously labeled “simplified†on the front matter), which thins the large chords that would be problematic or impossible for a barely-an-8ve-reach collaborative pianist to play without adding musically inappropriate rolls or breaks, but also preserves the musical content and grammatically accurate voice-leading. Given that Strauss’s op. 10 collection is much more widespread on today’s concert programs than the Bridge, and given that average conservatory pianist heights and hand sizes have dropped significantly in the 20th and 21st centuries, the need for a similar adaptation in at least some of the op. 10 songs is obvious. Additionally, Strauss’s songs are often so orchestral in spirit—much more so than the Bridge—that the instinct to treat them as orchestral reductions to be adapted by each individual player should be as self-evident and considered as musically appropriate as it would be for any of Strauss’s beloved horn concerti. Performers should feel free to insert their own adaptations, additions, and omissions to this score as needed. The primary source material for this edition is Henle’s edition of the Acht Gedichte. However, any proprietary material that is not public domain (like their fingerings, front matter, and critical notes) is left out of this edition, leaving only what is public domain and edited by Ms. DiPaolo. Unreasonably large chords and arpeggio figures that would require being reachable by a larger hand have been condensed into figures more appropriate for the just-an-octave hand without sacrificing technique and excitement. This edition makes minor improvements to the engraving, like removing syllabic beaming in the voice and adding octave lines when appropriate. This edition also uses Accessible Accompaniments’ distinctive house style, marked by its visual beauty and ease of reading. While this song will be published in low, middle, and high keys for your convenience, please feel free to request another transposition if you are purchasing from a site that does not offer automatic transposition or you don’t see the key that you need.
