Abraham Lincoln Funeral March for Concert BandBy John Gross Barnard Orchestrated by Jari Villanueva This funeral march written by John Gross Barnard was performed by the United States Marine Band during the funeral procession from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol for Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865. The march is titled: Funeral March in Memory of the Abraham Lincoln: Played at the Obsequies of the President of the United States by the US Marine Band. The funeral march follows the standard format of dirges of the time (most notable are Webster’s Funeral March, Chopin’s Funeral March and March in Saul by Handel) written in minor keys (considered somber) and divided into eight measure phrases which makes it easy for the funeral cadence to be played underneath. This funeral march, like most written during this time, has a transition to a major key (happier sounding). This march goes to the relative major (D minor to D major) key. Since no parts are extant from the US Band, I was asked to score the march for a modern symphonic band. Note: The original version of Duet in D-Flat Major made use of relatively uncommon time signatures (6/16; 9/16; 12/16). This 'Alternate Version' has rewritten the piece into more familiar time signatures (6/8; 9/8; 12/8). Duet in D-Flat Major was written in what could perhaps be best described as a burst of inspiration. After a couple of days of casually juggling some motifs around in my mind, clicked and I woke up with a musical idea that I scrambled to write down as quickly as possible. I spent the majority of that day developing these ideas, and this became what is now the third movement. Some of the ‘leftover ideas’ that didn’t make it into the finale were used as seeds for the second movement - in particular, the motifs at measure 9 and from 70-80. The opening movement ended up being the last one written and begins with a noble and/or heroic fanfare in 6/16. The second movement cautiously meanders through unexpected harmonies, much like someone nervously exploring unfamiliar places. The finale is another fanfare, but has some mischievous fun after turning a few harmonic corners in minor. My goal with this duet was to create a musical universe that has the grandeur of an orchestra with just two voices.  I’ve adapted this duet for a variety of instruments. The score reads as a small flex-band ensemble, but this piece is intended to be performed by just two musicians.Instruments:Part 1 - Clarinet in Bb - Alto Clarinet - Bass Clarinet - Alto Saxophone - Tenor Saxophone in Bb - Baritone Saxophone - Trumpet in Bb - Horn in F - Alto TrombonePart 2 - Bass Clarinet - Bassoon - Baritone Saxophone - Trombone - Bass Trombone - Euphonium (BC and TC) - Tuba.

The Second Movement, is a dance like movement of the scene while people are strolling in Paradise. The Key signature contrast is from D minor to D major and then to D minor once again. The last two movements are in the Key of F major. The third movement displays of what it is like to chill out in the sunlight. This deeply moving ballad is so beautiful and will portray the longest movement of the piece. The last and fourth movement is a 6/8 Dance of getting yourself exposed to the sunlight.This is a separate part scored for 2nd Alto Saxophone that is 5 pages long and is Scored in 4 movements, 1 - Atmospheres , 2 - Strolling in Paradise, 3 - Chillin Ballad, 4 - Exposed to the sunlight. Each different part will require separate purchases.

It contains the parts for Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, B flat Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, B flat Trumpet, Tenor Saxophone, French Horn in F, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Euphonium, Trombone, Bass Drum and Snare Drum. The piece uses the whole ranges of these instruments, from the A1 that can be played by the Bassoon and Trombone, to the C8 that is required from the Piccolo. Many of these instruments need to use techniques to utilise their full range, so make sure your instrumentalists are skilled and knowledgeable.The song has a lot of rhythmic and melodic diversity, and switches tempo and key signature frequently. The keys used are C major, F major, G major and E minor, not too difficult. Some of the rhythms can be quite hard to grasp, and instrumentalists must be able to play quick notes with accuracy. Again, make sure your instrumentalists are well learned for this. The song has a set of melodies, that are divided up by three bar percussion solos. Many of the instruments play solos or solis throughout the song, which it can be good for developing an instrumentalist's ability to stay calm on stage.
