A very popular number for weddings, also effective for meditations and recital encores. Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are: Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions, but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular. His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. The Twelve Pieces for Two Cellos, containing National Songs & Fugues, Op. 156 by J. J. F. Dotzauer (1783—1860) are possibly the most enjoyable duet collection of the five. Six pieces are fugues, and six are national airs, masterfully arranged for two cellos. Among them we even find the French national anthem, labelled “La Marseillaise ou la Caramagnoleâ€, whose story I had a lot of fun unearthing. All duets are written in bass clef, even if one of them goes up to the sixth position. They are perfect for student concerts or just for learning a few beautiful popular songs, all while travelling the world. From Ireland to Boemia, from France to Scotland, it will be an unforgettable journey! This edition is offered in two versions, Original & Collector’s Edition. Published by James Strauss (A0.1035207). The French violinist Henri Vieuxtemps wrote Souvenir d’Amérique, opus 17 for violin and piano, in 1843, during his first concert tour in the United States. This set of variations, based on the melody of the popular song Yankee Doodle, became the entertaining surprise encore piece at Vieuxtemps’ recitals. Its humorous spirit, together with its virtuosic firework displays and imaginative use of playing techniques, made Souvenir d’Amérique an instant audience favorite. My flute arrangement of this work is based on the original edition and the excellent arrangement for flute and piano made by the Italian virtuoso Alberto Roberti (1833-1908). While adapting it for flute and string orchestra, I realized that small compositional changes would be necessary to make it successful as a flute piece, at the same time, I always tried to preserve the composer’s original musical effects. I also added several register changes to the String orchestra parts as well as dynamic indications.I very much hope that this brilliant musical gem will be a welcome addition to the flute repertoire and that it will give joy and pleasure to both the player and the listener. This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (18 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for a French Horn Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection which are readily available for a wide variety of instr.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533506). Jenny L'Ouvrière is a popular romance from 1845 with music by Étienne Arnaud and words by Emile Barateau. The song speaks of an hardworking weaver who is poor, but also courageous and good. The pastorale-like theme is also presented in a more varied form.One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director of music of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that heconverted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. OnMarch 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.

In his op. 21, he succeedsin using the mellow forrest sound of four horns as a basis for virtuoso bird song, and even composes a kind of counterpoint, as the calmness of the accompaniment emphasizes the effect produced by the extremely playful flute. A special effect is achieved by placing the horns at a distance from the flutes. This piece is rewarding for every flutist, and it can be widely used due to the option of having the horn parts taken over by either piano or harmonium.

Mertz himself took note of Mozart's 'mandolin serenade' for he employed as a catalyst a brief quote of the mandolin introduction in his Op. 28 for a modulatory transition based upon the theme. Mertz also included a simple arrangement of the aria as number 76 in his Kukuk, a 'musical panorama' of 136 short pieces.Martha, Op. 16Martha, oder Der Markt zu Richmond by German composer Friedrich Flotow (1812-1883) was first produced in Vienna in 1847. In the second act of Martha Flotow incorporates 'Tis the Last Rose of Summer (Qui sola, verginrosa), a traditional Irish melody to which the poet Thomas Moore wrote lyrics. It was one of the most popular songs of the nineteenth century. Following studies in Italy, the German composer was chiefly active in Paris and Berlin, although he traveled Europe extensively producing his operas. Le prophete premiered in Paris in 1849 after a long delay due to casting problems. Mertz's Op. 21 was published shortly thereafter.Nabucco, Op. 62 and Rigoletto, Op. 63Giuseppe Verdi's first major triumph as an opera composer was with the biblical opera Nabucodonosor (more commonly known as Nabucco). The opera was premiered in Milan in 1842 and its subsequent revivals throughout Europe spread Verdi?s fame at an astounding rate. Consequently, Verdi was commissioned to compose 14 operas in the following decade. Among these operas was Rigoletto, first produced in Venice in 1851.
