Nancy Braithwaite has been a champion of my music since 1996 when I wrote a solo clarinet piece (Trinca de Chôros) for her to play at her sister Ann's wedding that year in Vermont. After the wedding Nancy asked me if I would write a new piece for her group the Arto Ensemble. I said yes, and I gave them Yo Picasso (1997) for clarinet, viola, cello and piano. Subsequently Nancy asked for more works from me over the years. Octet in D (2012)Clarinet Quintet (2013) La Serenissima (2013) Alice (2015)B.A.C.H. (2018) This year she asked me to write a Nonet so that she could feature it with her group the Rietveld Ensemble in a program with nonets by Bohuslav Martinu and Louis Farrenc. I said yes. This work is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello and double bass. It is in five movements. 1. Introduction, Moderato 2. Largo, Vivace, TRIO 3. Prestissimo 4. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. is a reminder to artists to capture the relaxed and naïve state of mind of children whose artistic approaches are not yet informed and diluted by the wisdom of years and the expectations of craft. When the normally informed and trained mind can retreat into a more relaxed and naïve state, the results can surprise and sparkle. Andante for String Quartet (Scintillare) captures a childlike, yet informed state of mind, a rare occurrence where music seems to be the only way to depict the liberating feeling. Scored for traditional string quartet, this short four-minute work was written for an advanced or professional ensemble needing repertoire for educational concerts in k-12 school venues. It's a highly accessible work with a lot of flourish, but still retaining elements of craft, for those in the audience that appreciate string quartet music on a more studied level. This work can also be used by school-aged (16-19 years-old) ensembles who have two advanced violinists paired up with a texturally supportive violist of intermediate ability who doesn't mind the occasional interspersed solo fill, and a rhythmically solid cellist, who will not have a technically difficult part, but still has a very important foundational role to play.

Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats. She asked me if I would be interested in writing a companion work with the same instrumentation as the Schubert. She also mentioned that Schubert’s inspiration was based on Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, opus 20. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. My Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) is, like the Beethoven and the Schubert, in six movements. The instrumentation is, like the Schubert, scored for Bb clarinet, bassoon, horn in F, string quartet and contrabass. 1. Prelude … Moderato; Scherzo … Prestissimo! 2. Arioso … Allegro con moto 3. Numinoso … Largo 4. Alla Marcia … Allegretto 5. Recitativo … Adagio; Canzone … Adagio 6. Bacchanale … Prestissimo! The instrumentation is, like the Schubert, scored for Bb clarinet, bassoon, horn in F, string quartet and contrabass. 1. Prelude … Moderato; Scherzo … Prestissimo! 2. Arioso … Allegro con moto 3. Numinoso … Largo 4. Alla Marcia … Allegretto 5. Recitativo … Adagio; Canzone … Adagio 6. Bacchanale … Prestissimo! Clarinet Quintet, opus 155 is the fourth work I have written for Nancy Braithwaite. The first one was written on the occasion of her sister’s wedding in Vermont. Nancy premiered the solo clarinet piece “Trinca di Chôro” during the wedding ceremony. The second work was “Yo Picasso” (2007) for clarinet, viola, cello and piano. The work was tailor-made for the Arto Ensemble which consisted of two married couples: Oane (piano) and Nancy (clarinet), and Prunella (viola) and Guus (cello). The third work was “Octet in D, opus 144” (2012) scored for clarinet, horn, bassoon, string quartet and double bass. Nancy and her Dutch colleagues premiered the work in a program with the Schubert Octet in Bunnik, a small village west of Utrecht in the Netherlands.Many great composers have tackled the clarinet quintet, most notable Mozart and Brahms.
My Quintet is somewhat different in that there are a lot of jazz elements and something new that I have not tackled before: polymeter.

The work begins with a clarinet meditation over pianissimo string chords. The music is very static … not unlike the sacred music of Arvo Pärt. This is followed by an allegro that is in 12/8 featuring a pizzicato jazzy bass figure played by the cello. The third movement is my experiment in polymeter. The ostinato pattern is grouped in a metrical scheme of 4, 3, 4 and 5; but the octave melody in the clarinet and first violin unfolds in standard duple meter of 4. The middle fourth movement is an adagio. This is an example of what I love about music, a soaring melody above slow haunting chords. A reprise of the jazzy Interlude 1 comes next, but in a slightly different guise with new elements, both melodically and harmonically.Interlude 2 is reminiscent of the meditative music of the first movement, but again it is quite different in mood and atmosphere.The finale is another experiment in polymeter. At first the metrical scheme is in a pattern of 4, 3, 4, 3, 2, 3 and 2. But eventually the meters get all scrambled up. Have fun trying to count. You’ll get lost! Above the “oom-pah oom-pah” accompaniment, the clarinet soars like a flying bird … diving, hovering, dipping and swooping!!!
