This instrument cannot play individual sounds but rather composite gestures, of which the initial impulse linked to the production of a sound is an integral element. In a journey to Thailand, I visited Wat Arun, “the Temple of Dawn.†First from a distance, it appeared as a majestic looming tower possessing a monolithic form. It was then of extreme surprise to proceed closer only to discover that the tower was actually comprised from thousands of small shards of ceramic plates. From the closer perspectival proximity, these small shards created intricate filigreed patterns. The play between the presence of the temple’s totality and its fractured parts helped to provide both the material and formal conceptions for this quartet. The piece is built from three movements with two “sonic windows†between them. In the first movement, the composite sounds are introduced and form phrases interjections, and a part of a song; the second movement is similar to an improvisation using these composite sounds; the last movement is a speech composed of the fragments from the first two movements. The piece is dedicated to the Arditti String Quartet. – Chaya Czernowin & Steven Kazuo Takasugi.

If Franz Liszt composed a Bagatelle without tonality, why not a milonga without tonality. This piece is placed somewhere between classical music and new tango. Moderator Louis Barabbas wrote about Ausente for the BBC blog Fresh On The Net nr. 305 (19 November 2018), http://freshonthenet.co.uk/2018/11/faves305 Described as 'somewhere between classical music and new tango' the artist’s phrasing here is telling: somewhere rather than something. For in Juan Maria Solare’s Ausente (absent) we are certainly transported. Each angular phrase jutting up like stone columns or distended stalactites in a limey cave. The trickling thrust of its furtive intent feels somehow elemental yet focused through an urban noir prism, drops of heavy water in varying temperatures, some icicles and some steam, shards of smoky light poking around slow moving fan blades and between the rusty teeth of ancient window grills, monstrous warped shadows cast up from humble orphaned minutiae. Music as beautiful and unsettling as it is hard to dance to. The idea of dancing this piece was a surprise for me, since tango music doesn't need to be danced to (you can also just listen to it). But if you wonder how this tango would appear danced, imagine it is not called tango but contemporary ballet rooted in tango - and suddenly you find ways of dancing it... provided an open-minded choreographer is on board! If someone wants to dance this music in the style of the tango of 1920, they will have a hard time. Perdido Bay Moon Rag is a heartfelt and evocative solo piano composition dedicated to the memory of an elegant lady whose love for dance and a chance suggestion led to the creation of this beautiful piece. The composition pays homage to the serene beauty and cherished memories of Bear Point, Alabama, a place rich in history and personal significance to the composer, Donald Ashwander.The story behind Perdido Bay Moon Rag begins on a summer day when Donald, along with friends Edith and Edwin Zelnicker, found themselves on the picturesque Bear Point, Alabama. This tranquil peninsula on the shores of Perdido Bay held a special place in their hearts, as it was a locale where they had spent countless hours as children. They reminisced about their youth, playing beneath the majestic magnolia trees adorned with Spanish Moss and exploring ancient Indian mounds in search of pottery shards.It was during this nostalgic conversation that Edith, the elegant lady in question, suggested the title for a piano composition: Perdido Bay Moon Rag. Enchanted by the idea, Donald was determined to bring this vision to life. Upon returning to New York, he began crafting the piece, but it somehow eluded his grasp. Despite this initial challenge, he designed an appropriate cover for the composition and sent it to Edith and Edwin in Mobile.Over the years, Perdido Bay Moon Rag remained a fixture on Edith and Edwin's piano, a symbol of a cherished memory and unfulfilled promise. Edith confessed to her friend that she had attempted to play the piece but found it too complex, and so it remained unplayed.Time passed, and sadly, Edith fell ill. On a poignant visit to Mobile after Edith's passing, the atmosphere in their home was filled with her spirit. There, prominently displayed on the piano, lay Perdido Bay Moon Rag. In that moment, Donald knew that he needed to fulfill his promise and honor Edith's memory properly.With newfound determination and inspiration, Donald embarked on a journey to create a completely new composition that would capture the essence of Bear Point, Perdido Bay, and the moonlit nights they had cherished. This time, the music flowed effortlessly from his fingertips, as if guided by the memories and love he held for his dear friend.Perdido Bay Moon Rag is a testament to the enduring power of memories, friendship, and the creative process. It reflects the tranquility of Bear Point, the gentle sway of Spanish Moss, and the serenity of moonlit nights on the bay. Through its delicate melodies and intricate rhythms, the composition invites listeners to share in the deep emotions and fond recollections that inspired its creation.The final page of the sheet music contains special program notes by Donald Ashwander.

In writing this piece, I envisioned landscapes covered in snow and ice – a meadow, a dark forest, a frozen lake, and a majestic mountain range. I sought to capture other elements of sound and imagery as well, such as whistling and whirling of frosty wind, glittering sunlight reflected off of shards of ice, snow falling, and joyous sounds of people ice skating. I was largely inspired by an experience I had of standing outside one wintery evening in Colorado – one of my favorite places to be in Winter – captivated by the beauty of all I saw, heard, and felt around me. Since then, I have always experienced a thrill of wonder, beauty, and mystery about the outdoors in Winter.
