I have been a huge admirer of Federico Mompou since my first encounter with his Música Callada on the ECM label with pianist Herbert Henck. Years later I found an album of the same work with Jenny Lin on the Steinway & Sons label. I was so impressed with her work on the Mompou that I hired her to record my Twenty-nine Fireflies for solo piano (1977-2002). I have subsequently hired her to record other solo piano works of mine: For Morton Feldman (2017), Préludes ... Hommage à C.D. (2020), Via Crucis ... Hommage à Franz Liszt (2020) and Huit Épigraphes (2021). So when it came time to write my 16th string quartet, I decided that Beethoven wasn't as inspiring as Shostakovich was when I wrote SQ15 ... Hommage à DSCH (2021). So, instead I thought maybe I should write a tribute to Mompou for my 16th string quartet.  SQ16 ... Música Callada (2022) is in 6 movements. 1. Adagio - Moderato 2. Adagio - Moderato 3. Presto - TRIO 4. Adagio 5. Allegro - TRIO 6. Largo NB: The entire work is played muted, con sordino.

It was recorded for the first time in 1971, with the title Brandy by Scott English, however, it achieved popularity with the version by the American Barry Manilow in 1974, being his first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and his first golden song.1​2​In 1992 the Italian music producer Marco Parmigiani produced a Eurodance version on 12-inch vinyl. It was released in Italy on the Disc-O-Very Records label, and a year later it was published in Spain on the legendary Barcelona label Max Music. The version was heard a lot in Valencian clubs in the 90s.It was later re-recorded by the Irish group Westlife in 2003, and this version became number one on the UK chart.3The song also appeared in several films, such as Can't Hardly Wait, being performed by various characters. One theory says that because of Manilow's alcoholism, Brandy became Mandy.It is thought that Scott English wrote Brandy inspired by his favorite dog that he let escape. English claimed (reported in The Billboard Book of Number One Adult Contemporary Hits) that an assistant called him early that morning to ask who Brandy was, and he, irritated, lied that it was a dog so that the conversation will end quickly.When Manilow recorded Mandy he was not happy with the electronic rhythm of English's original version, so he preferred to sing it as a ballad and was much more pleased with the results.The song was parodied on the show Gift Grub under the title Andy on The Drew Carey Show, where the name Mandy is replaced by Kyra. Raphaël Novarina is a French composer and Pianist born in Paris in 1980, that composes in a variety of musical styles and setting, but mainly focuses on contemporary classical piano. Novarina also manages a music label. Novarina has an extensive collection of albums. His Solo Piano series has over ten albums of original solo piano music. The style of each album varies, but Novarina’s compositional styles are always based in the rich European classical tradition of forms and harmonic and melodic developments. Each album contains solid playing and themed around various forms. For example, Solo Piano VIII, is comprised of ten Etudes. While Solo Piano VII is all Funeral Marches. Now Novarina is releasing Solo Piano X, which has a theme of suites. The album contains ten suites composed by Novarina. A suite, in Western classical music, is an ordered set of instrumental pieces. Originating in the late 14th century as a pairing of dance tunes and grew in scope to comprise up to five dances, sometimes with a prelude. The separate movements were often thematically and tonally linked. The equal partnership of the vocal line and piano interact closely to bring the poetry vividly into life with unimaginable artistic heights and unbridled passion.This volume includes Gouvy songs set to 18 poems of Philippe Desportes (1546–1606), and 18 poems of Moritz Hartmann (1821–1872). The elements of Romantic love poetry, such as enchanting love and its pain, and the personifying of nature, are fluently described with a great sensitivity in both voice and piano. Gouvy’s melody stir up the imagination because of his special treatment of words through a distinguishable and melodious vocal line, and his story telling and poetic treatment and development of the piano accompaniment. His compositional artistry places him in the upper echelons of art-song composers. He traveled to Leipzig in 1845, but when the authorities discovered a volume of patriotic poems entitled Kelch und Schwert (Chalice and Sword), he fled to Belgium and France. It is at this time that he possibly met Théodore Gouvy. Eighteen poems of Hartmann were translated from German to French by the French poet, Adolph Larmande, of whom very little is known. Pierre Toussaint Adolphe Larmande seems to have been a rather obscure poet and musician. We know that he taught music theory at the Paris Conservatory at the same time Anton Reicha and Michele Carafa were on the faculty. We also know that in 1847 he married an English woman by the name of Marie Caroline Bradley. There are random documents, such as a Certificate of Arrival in London, England, in 1837, but there are no birth and death dates given, and that includes his obituary notice.
