Mixed choir (SATB) and organ - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q26244 Motette auf Worte des Ezzoliedes von 1063. Composed by Peter Paul Foerster. This edition: choral score. Schott Choral Music. Downloadable, Choral score. Schott Music - Digital #Q26244. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q26244). German. The motet 'Da ward geborn ein Kind' by the composer and choir director Peter Paul Förster from Wuppertal is based on words from Ezzolied. This multi-verse poem on the miracles of Christ, written by the canon Ezzo from Bamberg in 1083, marked the beginning of early Middle High German literature. From this poem, Förster took verses on the birth of Christ and the praise to Mary and turned them into a singable choral work for mixed choir (SATB) and organ the tonal language of which can be 'placed between archaic church mode and modern music'. Förster's fondness of Gregorian quotes becomes apparent in the repeated use of the Gregorian chorale 'Puer natus est nobis'. A musical Christmas gem for (church) choirs at an advanced level.

Organ - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q45183 Martin Luther. Composed by Enjott Schneider. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 24 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q45183. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q45183). On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows: '1st movement: Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of faith ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people. 2nd movement: In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the Luther rose which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, white is the colour of angels and ghosts, black stands for the pain of crucification: The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified. But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time. 3rd movement: The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The Danse macabre was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen from 1524 (Enchiridion from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant Media vita in morte sumus created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air. 4th movement: The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen, are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a perpetuum mobile, i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air. 5th movement: The Mighty Fortress, on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the Marseille anthem of the Reformation, Friedrich Engels the Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant birdcall version of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the ideals of freedom of Christians.'.

Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. Lines that end in a melisma should be performed by singing the final vowel and placing the consonant at the release of the final melisma note. The first verse may be sung in unison or as a solo as printed below. The verses may be sung in alternatum (odd verses, printed below: solo chant, even verses: choir). For a complete translation of the six Latin verses, refer to the next page. In the music’s text, I have retained all accent marks as found in the Liber Usualis. These should help inform text stress. The last two verses are suitable as a Communion anthem. This SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristina Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. This SSA version is also suitable for performance by an advanced middle school choral ensemble or for TTB men. Also available as an organ solo or in English. SATB Latin/English versions coming soon!

Small Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767547 Composed by Mike Lyons. Contemporary. Score and parts. 32 pages. Lyons Music Services #5743867. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767547). Allegro Spiritoso came about in response to the Covid-19 lockdown. I had been looking for inspiration for a new brass piece and these ideas finally gelled into this single movement work. The opening requires controlled flutter tonguing from the trumpets and glissandos from both the horns and the trombone. This first set of ideas are angry and frustrated, coming in sharp and bitter contrasts between the fluttering of the trumpets and the repetitive semitone on the tuba. Although in F (concert) this section really doesn't have a key centre. Each outburst instead uses a set of pitches ultimately derived from the Gregorian chant of the Dies Irae which appears later in the piece.I imagined how it must feel to be trapped in the house for weeks on end by the lockdown and the fear of catching the virus, combined with the lack of any real leadership from the British government. The interlocking tuba, trombone and horn rhythms (occasionally passed to 2nd. trumpet) drive the music forward and represent, in a way, the mutating virus which underlies all the troubled emotions caused by the lockdown itself and the feelings of isolation and, indeed, abandonment which many people feel.Half way between letters B and C, the trombone plays a kind of distorted motif reminiscent of a Chorale melody which leads us into a section devoted to those who have died (and continue to die) because of the disease. From letter C to the end, the main melodic motifs come from the Dies Irae, part of the Catholic Mass for the Dead (Requiem). Stated first in the Trumpets, the Tuba takes over the melody in augmentation with fragments passed around the ensemble with interjections from the angry motifs of the first section. Finally, the music begins to quieten and work towards the finish. The Dies Irae melody is reduced to a kind of skeleton of itself (all repeated notes removed) which ends the piece over the tuba/horn ostinato. The whole piece is 2 minutes and 57 seconds long and is - though quite by accident - an exact multiple of 19 bars long (114).It's a very dramatic and angry piece and therefore is quite dissonant. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but well worth a listen.

Schott Music - Digital #Q46249. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q46249). Latin.Almost 40 compositions, half of which written for accompanied and unaccompanied choir, can currently be found in the catalogue of works by the young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born in 1992). After winning several national composition prizes, she was awarded the 1st prize of the 13th International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 for Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed a cappella choir. The complex sacred a cappella choral work is based on the eponymous Gregorian chorale (Psalm 89:2). This Latin choral piece is characterized by three main structures: by aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales which are emphasized by sustained organum-like notes from the Gregorian chorale melody, on the one hand, by Renaissance-style polyphony combined with modern harmony, on the other hand, and finally, by long static chords merging in space and harmony. A wonderfully mystical, spherical composition which, by means of ad libitum passages marked in the musical text, even gives the performer the opportunity to interpret the piece individually.

Schott Music - Digital #Q46312. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q46312). Latin. The extremely compositional versatility of Enjott Schneider is evident even in the small(est) form of choral music. In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), the award-winning composer combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. Imbued with calmness and sensuality, the church music composition is based on the text of a Latin antiphon from the Maundy Thursday liturgy. According to the composer, these anonymous verses represent for him the central statement of Christian faith: Ubi Caritas – Where there is love, there is God!In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), Enjott Schneider combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. According to the composer, the text represents for him the central statement of Christian faith: Ubi Caritas – Where there is love, there is God!

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2779). Hermann Schroeder (1904–1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale which Schroeder appreciated very much. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. Among the church modes, the 'tonus peregrinus' is the most interesting because it has two alternating reciting tones and therefore does not fit into the common pattern of the eight church modes. Since it 'modulates', it is a stranger, a 'peregrinus', among the tones – and therefore of special interest to composers. It forms the basis of the old Gregorian Magnificat, Bach used it in his Magnificat, Mozart in the introit of his requiem. Schroeder used the tonus peregrinus to achieve interesting harmonic and tonal effects, thus creating a virtuoso cycle of ten effective and colourful variations. A rewarding piece for church services and concerts.

This piece weds James Montgomery’s hymn text on prayer with an adapted version of the plainsong DIVINUM MYSTERIUM. This meditation on prayer is wonderfully communicated through a Gregorian chant tune, which is itself a vehicle for sung prayer. The various ways of expressing a prayer (a sigh, a falling tear, upward glances) are reflected in the musical setting. For the climax of the piece, as the text tells of the soul entering Heaven while praying, the choir presents a wordless prayer. The piece works well for concert programs, general worship, or for memorial services.

Organ - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q11271 En mémoire d'un jeune homme. Composed by Harald Feller. This edition: Sheet music. Dieses Orgelstück eignet sich liturgisch insbesondere für die Passionszeit und Allerheiligen/Totensonntag, aber auch für Orgelkonzerte zum Thema Tod und Vergänglichkeit. Downloadable. Duration 10 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q11271. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11271). This organ piece is ideal as liturgical piece for Lent and All Saints' Day/Sunday before Advent commemorating the dead but also for organ concerts on the topic of death and transitoriness. 'Poème funèbre is a very personal piece which, like an epitaph, shall bring to mind the death of a person who died young. I think such a remembrance is important, for it connects people with the dead. The first part is a musical expression of lament and grief: Within its symmetrical structure, the composition rises toward a dramatic climax and, diminishing, returns back to its starting point. This part is followed by a second quiet part in which the Gregorian antiphon 'In paradisum' is paraphrased in soft colours, as an expression of consolation and trusting to the sense of the yet incomprehensible.' (Harald Feller).

By Maurice Gustavo Durufle. Arranged by John Holland. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Religious,Sacred. 31 pages. John Ivor Holland #881046. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1290339). The Requiem, Op. 9, is a 1947 (revised 1961) setting of the Latin Requiem by Maurice Duruflé for a solo voice, mixed choir, and organ, or orchestra with organ. The thematic material is mostly taken from the Mass for the Dead in Gregorian chant and first published in 1948 by Durand in an organ version. Duruflé was among French composers commissioned in May 1941 by the Vichy regime to write extended works for a monetary award, such as 10,000 francs for a symphonic poem, 20,000 for a symphony, and 30,000 for an opera. Duruflé decided to compose a symphonic poem, which ended up being the 'Requiem' and was still working on it in 1944 when the regime collapsed - he received 30,000 francs, instead of the 10,000 of his commission, because of the complex nature of his work and inflation during that time. A portion of the 'Pie Jesu' was used by Michael Jackson to introduce the track 'Little Susie' on 'HIStory - Past, Present and Future - Book I'. This arrangement is for 10 wind players, with various transpositions to allow a flexible performance, and a contrabass instrument.

Published by Nancy DeVries (A0.964555). Adoro Te Devote (Thee We Adore) is a piano arrangement of the familiar Gregorian chant hymn tune of the same name. The text for this Eucharistic hymn was written by St. Thomas Aquinas during the 13th century. As the hymn is in honor of the Most Blessed Sacrament, it is especially appropriate for Church use at Corpus Christi, Eucharistic Adoration or devotions. This meditative piece may also be appreciated for home devotional use, or for performance at programs or recitals. Advanced Intermediate level. Not overly difficult, but some minor challenges re: changes in meter, accidentals and octave work. This piece may be an enjoyable and rewarding work to play for those at this level.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2398). Hermann Schroeder (1904–1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972672 Composed by James Siddons. Christian,Concert,Contemporary,Easter. Score. 17 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #6671707. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972672). Sonata Hymnica No. 5 has the subtitle Scenes of Calvary. Landscape paintings and printed illustrations of the Cross of Calvary were ubiquitous in Christian literature in the late 19th century, so it not surprising that allusions to such art are found in the texts of hymns. The three hymns heard in Sonata Hymnica No. 5 all evoke some sense of seeing, in a spiritual way, the scene of the Crucifixion. Sonata Hymnica No. 5 opens with a sturdy and rugged statement of When I Survey the Wond’rous Cross, written by Isaac Watts in 1707. This poem continues: On which the Prince of Glory dy’d, . . . See from His Head, his Hands, his Feet, Sorrow and Love flow mingled down! In the United States, music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) composed a tune in 1824 for singing Watts’ hymn. Named HAMBURG tune, it was an adapted form of some Gregorian chant in Church Mode I. This combination of poem and tune became very popular; so much so, that by the 1880s, elaborations of it appeared in print. The most enduring is the pairing of Watts’ poem and Mason’s tune with a simple camp meeting song, At the Cross, to be a refrain. It has the phrases, At the cross, where I first saw the light . . . It was there by faith I received my sight. The centerpiece of Sonata Hymnica No. 5 is the tune TOPLADY, the usual tune for singing Rock of Ages. This tune was composed in 1830 by Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), an associate of Lowell Mason in New York. He wrote hymns and hymn tunes, published hymnals, and worked tirelessly to elevate choral singing in churches. Hastings indicated that he intended his tune for singing Rock of Ages by naming it after the author of the hymn-poem, the English pastor Augustus Toplady (1740-1778). The Rev. A. B. Grosart wrote in a memorial that Toplady was no poet or inspired singer, but an impulsive, rash-spoken, reckless preacher who could nonetheless picture vanishing gleams of imaginative light in his hymnic verses. A better impression was gained by poet A. C. Benson (1862-1925), who, upon hearing Rock of Ages sung at William Gladstone’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1898 --- a rare State funeral attended by several members of the British Royal family --- wrote, To have written such words which should come home to people in moments of high, deep, and passionate emotion . . . there can hardly be anything worth doing better than that. This high compliment came from the poet who, a few years later, would write the words of Elgar’s Coronation Ode for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. A camp meeting song, a rash-spoken English pastor, two American music educators, a State funeral at Westminster Abbey --- such is the wide world of influence and inspiration of these three Scenes of Calvary.

Latin.
Andrej Makor, currently a master student of composition at the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini in Padua, has already won numerous international composition prizes. The highly respected works by the artist born in Slovenia in 1987 are performed by renowned choirs, ensembles and soloists at prestigious competitions and festivals, among others. His composition O Emmanuel for which he was awarded the 2nd prize of the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 is based on the original Gregorian chant of the last of a total of seven so-called O antiphons which are sung at the seven Advent days with the Magnificat at Vespers in anticipation of Christmas Eve. Makor's score which follows the traditional motet form but is structured in a more modern form begins with the original Gregorian chorale. Its melody runs through various voice groupings in the course of the piece. In the concluding 'Domine Deus noster' whose pressing character becomes obvious in the constantly recurring triplet figurations of the middle parts, the work imbued with the idea of eternity reaches its extremely impressive climax.
