Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1457983 Composed by Anton Webern. Arranged by Riley Davis. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,New Age. 29 pages. Riley Davis #1036965. Published by Riley Davis (A0.1457983). Langsamer Satz, or Slow Movement, is a one movement composition for string quartet. I wanted a more accessible version to play since most people do not play a string instrument, but wanted to still capture the beauty of the small ensemble. The score is set up with the same rehearsal markings as the string quartet and plays very similar, but some changes to both dynamics and range had to be changed due to the different medium.

Bassoon Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998889 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Individual part. 7 pages. Robert A. Howard #6496061. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998889). This is a set of three solo bassoon works. The first piece, Pierrot, develops the notion of 'line'. It explores various facets of the instrument (as in the more complex nature of Pierrot's Commedia Dell'Arte character). The piece features a serial 'note-row' procedure but in a relaxed manner, more akin to Berg than either Schoenberg or Webern. The second piece, Folk Lament, alludes to a folk idiom by using modality (characterised by the flattened seventh degree of the scale) within a sonata form structure. The two main themes give a broad feel of being improvised and, particularly in the case of the second subject, includes composed-out forms of folk-like ornamentation. The final piece, The Clown, employs bluesy inflections, an irregular time signature (5/4) and a clear rondo structure. Varied repetitions of the main, jaunty theme, alternate with contrasting episodes in related keys, one of which is even a derivation of the 12-bar Blues. The set is highly accessible and suitable for more advanced bassoonists including students and professionals. Each movement within this set is also available to purchase individually via Sheet Music Plus.Duration: 8 minutes 40 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Published by Richard St. Clair (A0.939792). This avant-garde piece of some 5 minutes duration is the composer's brief foray into the post-Webern avant-garde of Stockhausen, Boulez et al. It was given its premiere in July 1967 at the Marlboro Festival of Music, the composer at the piano (the recording of which is this audio clip). His Piano Piece no. 2 (also for sale at SMP Press) is the composer's second and last avant-garde piece which develops the ideas further from Piano Piece no. 1.

Cool Wind Music Digital #3056419. Published by Cool Wind Music Digital (A0.841258). Full set of parts: Please contact Chris Gordon at the email address on the first page of music for details.IF NOT NOW, WHEN? If Not Now, When? gets its title from the novel by Primo Levi, the Italian author who both survived life in Auschwitz and fought the continued German military presence in Italy with the Resistance after the Italian surrender to the Allies in September 1943. Levi meant that revolution and the overthrow of tyranny should never be 'put off until tomorrow'. If you believe you are on the side of right, then 'seize the day'- tomorrow may be too late. The inspiration for INNW? grew from research I was doing into an early song by Alban Berg called An Leukon which Berg wrote in 1907 while a student of Arnold Schoenberg. In delving into the kind of world which Berg inhabited in the Vienna of 100 years ago, I was fascinated by the café culture* which played a pivotal role in the lives of most artists: not only composers, but also writers, painters, architects and journalists. They swirled around the fashionable 'watering holes' sucking up current thoughts and ideas, high on Viennese coffee, cigar smoke and idealism! I envisaged a play which tried to encapsulate all this and wrote a few scenes with characters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Steuermann, Pisk, Kraus, Gropius and Altenberg heatedly discussing music, art and poetry over large cups of milky coffee. This grew into the framework for INNW? which, to paraphrase Pirandello's play about characters seeking an author, is a 'play without words in several scenes'. The piece is organised into 8 short movements or 'scenes' showing the 'Schoenberg cirle' sharing their radical and daring ideas and the shock or delight (or both simultaneously) with which those ideas are greeted. The first, which happens to be the longest, is rooted in conventional tonality. It begins with a fanfare in D flat major ('aux armes, citoyens!'), then seeks a 'freer' tonality by means of the 'emancipation of the semitone' only to capitulate in the central section and, finally, to 'fall back to earth' by winding down in G sharp minor. These 'scenes' are not meant to represent particular composers. They are, however, meant to represent the kinds of directions in which music could progress, given the 'breakdown' or 'stretching to its limits' of traditional harmony which had occurred in the previous 10 to 20 years. So many ways forward were promulgated, with one after another extraordinary, and often unexpected, futuristic musical panoramas glimpsed momentarily. My aim is to demonstrate which directions they decided they could head in having cleared the 'overgrown' path before them. * I even discovered that, around this time, in the Café Central, a certain Leon (Lev) Bronstein, otherwise known as Leon Trotsky, banished by the Okhrana (Imperial secrect police) from his native Russia, would spend all day in a back room playing chess. How delicious, I thought, if Schoenberg had ever brushed passed Trotsky or, indeed, had ever spoken to him: the one planning political and the other musical revolution!

Published by Paladino Editions (A0.1273796). Originally intended as stylistic studies to achieve a maximum of musical expression in only a few bars, these aphorisms have a potency remiscent of Webern. They still reflect Rogl’s personal musical language, creating an intense yet meditative atmosphere. Though they demand deep concentration from the performer, the technical requirements are quite within the reach of advanced cello students.Born in 1960 and initially self-taught, Austrian composer Helmut Rogl completed university studies in Linz and Salzburg with Helmut Schiff, Gunter Waldek and Helmut Eder. His oeuvre ranges from solo pieces to orchestral and stage works, including commissions from the Munich Philharmonic, the Vienna Chamber Symphony, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. His achievements have been recognised in a number of national honours, one of them being the Landeskulturpreis für Musik, Upper Austria, in 2001. A series of cello works has resulted from his collaboration with Martin Rummel, who has edited this publication.

I met Lila Brown a year ago when she and members of the Boston Conservatory faculty performed my Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) at Seully Hall. Lila told me she had a summer festival in Salem, NY, and wondered if I would like to write a piece for her. I said sure. Just as in Hollywood, you never say no. At first Lila asked me if I would like to write a companion piece for Anton Webern’s Saxophone Quartet. I said sure!!! One thing led another and somehow I ended up agreeing to write a piano quintet for her. In the meanwhile Lila contacted Delores Stevens, artistic director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Festival, and asked her if she would also premiere the work at her festival. Delores did a little research on me and my music online and she said yes. So, here we are. Siamo d’accordo. I wrote my first piano quintet in 1988 for the Apple Hill Chamber Players. That was not the usual quintet of a piano and string quartet. The Schubert Trout quintet was my model: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. I titled that work, Piano Quintet … apple strudel (1988). At that time I was a huge fan of the Entenmann’s Apple Strudel. I imagined the piano being encased/surrounded by the four string instruments. My first real piano quintet was written for the Formosa Quartet and pianist Tammy Lum. They premiered the work at Nyack College during the spring of 1988. My current piano quintet (no. 2) is titled Pq2 … (2014). It is a work in five movements. I. Moderato … Trio II. Adagio … III. Tsiaj 1 … Allegro IV. Tsiaj 2 … Prestissimo! V. Adagio What’s tsiaj? Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1024240 Composed by Kent Piper. Contemporary,World. 14 pages. RKPiper #4582335. Published by RKPiper (A0.1024240). Geometria is a serial composition*.Geometria, Latin for geometry, is an arrangement of sound shapes. Beginning with a parallelogram it moves to a square and then to a triangle. At the apex of the triangle the piece retrogrades back through the previous shapes; a mirror image in sound. The parallelogram is achieved by use of canon, the square by homophony and the triangle by staggered entrances. There are 5 instruments and 5 notes; F, F#, A,C# and Bb. F#,Bb,C# form a major triad, F#,A,C# form a minor triad, A,Bb,C# form trichord 3-3, Bb,C#,F form trichord 3-11 and A,C#,F form trichord 3-12. Therefore, 5 geometric shapes, 5 instruments, 5 notes, 5 plus harmonic possibilities and 5 players. *Serial Music - the use of a sequence of notes in a definite order as a thematic basis for a composition and a source from which the musical material is derived. Serialism was an attempt to escape tonal-centered compositions prior to the twentieth century. It began with Arnold Schoenberg's twelve tone-technique in the early 1900's, though some of his contemporaries such as Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono and Milton Babbit were also working to establish serialism as a form of post-tonal thinking. Other composers such as Bela Bartok, Luciano Berio, Benjamin Britten, John Cage, Aaron Copland, Olivier Messiean, Arvo Part, Dmitri Shostakovich and Igor Stravinsky used serialism only for some of their compositions.
