Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942058). This witty and extremely fun work to perform by composer Apostolos Paraskevas was conceived after real events. There is a version for Soprano/tenor and Piano and one for guitar as well. Easy to perform and the text was inspired of the following narrative. I Slaughtered an Orange over the Sink... ...and it just sat there…It didn't say a word, not a sound of anguish, not even when my teeth started to tear apart it's flesh little by little... I knew it was a special orange but I couldn't fathom the magnitude of its character…Even when gentle I took it away from its friends there at the top of the kitchen counter, it looked at me almost with a sense of gratitude. Yes, gratitude.! As if it was saying: Thank you! Thank you for helping me to fulfill the purpose of my life…Since I was a little seed I knew I would serve a higher purpose. My sacrifice will help a human to become a healthier mother, doctor, composer, a better scientist. Yes, I think I felt it said…a better composer as well. ...and there I was, sinking my teeth deep inside its flesh and taking all of what it had to offer. It's life, it's substance, it's gratitude for serving a higher purpose. I slaughtered it over the sink, to avoid any evidence of what had happen there. The remaining outer sell, I placed it on the stove top and lighted up with fire, as my mother use to do, to release the heavenly smell and there it was. Evaporated everywhere! I inhale it, It became totally a part of me. Today, I slaughtered an orange over the sink and I didn’t say thank you! Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. Staines MorrisThe song, Staines Morris, is very well known by singers of traditional songs. It’s a 17th century song. It’s a 19th century song. Actually, it’s both! The lyrics were certainly published, and probably written, by Robert Cox for his play Actaeon and Diana, published in 1656. The tune was first published in John Playford’s The English Dancing Master in 1651. There is no evidence that, in the 17th century, the lyrics were sung to this melody. That didn’t happen for two hundred years, when William Chappell put the two together for his Popular Music of the Olden Time, vol. 1 (1859). I have added chords to the melody. Whilst humming the tune to myself, I found myself moving into 6/8 time, and that inspired me to compose a galliard based on it, complete with ‘divisions’ (runs of semiquavers or 32nd notes) and counterpoint. The song melody and the galliard can be played separately or as parts of one piece, perhaps with the galliard played between two of the verses. I put the galliard in A minor, to provide a contrast with the D minor song melody, but play them in whatever key takes your fancy. Many dancing masters published self-help instructional books, especially in France and Italy. Composers and publishers saw a commercial potential in collections of dance music and one of the earliest collections was that by composer and publisher Tielman (or Tylman) Susato, who published his Danserye in Antwerp in 1551. These music books were usually arranged with four independent instrumental parts and intended for use by any instruments that happened to be available. The dances still retain their freshness and charm today and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. The Pavane was a slow and dignified processional dance popular in Europe during the 16th century. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting various instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. While you can add flute, recorder, oboe, glockenspiel or whatever you want, additional instruments are not essential but can add contrasting tone colour. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic than a piano. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used (but feel free to add more) and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

A musical score or lead sheet was intended to be interpreted for style and tempo, and while some of those interpretations may not necessarily have been wrong, quite often they weren't always what the author intended, but face it, it's just plain hard to write music exactly in the way that the song is intended to be sung. Enter the computer age, and the ability for performers to understand that the interval of a note is an absolute time interval which puts the natural rhythm, or beat, of a musical arrangement at about 25% faster than a beat per second, which is why I arrange music to be performed at ~ 80 BPM, which means, approximately 80 beats per minute. That is not etched in stone, but it does represent the comfort zone to which the performer should subscribe when singing or playing a song. Contemporary jazz singers are, in my opinion, therefore obligated to re-arrange the songs that they intend to record, to avoid the embarrassment of getting it wrong. It happens. Timing is of the essence. Many of those old jazz classics are well served with a rewrite for the contemporary artist.The Nearness of You was written in 1938 by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics by Ned Washington, and was performed in the 1938 Paramount movie, Romance in the Dark, by Gladys Swarthout of the Metropolitan Opera. It has been recorded numerous times over the years, and it maintains its popularity today. The guitar chording for this arrangement is targeted toward the experienced and more advanced players, but I encourage the experienced intermediate level player to take up the challenge of learning to play this song. It will be a rewarding experience.
