Engl ish comments: Divertimento I and Divertimento II, for two violins were composed in 1996. These two sister compositions have the additional attraction of being unedited works which are representative of the composer's most recent style. This etymological description, which defines a personality rather than an established musical style, takes the form of a succession of contrasting dynamic movements. One of the most outstanding features is the way in which the two instruments break away from their usual range of sounds to create the ideal conditions for suggesting their latent extent of sound possibilities in compositions that could be extended perfectly well into a string quartet. The interplay between the two instruments opens up a whole range of possibilities: short motives in an imitative style often braking out into a repetition of brief themes with a lot of personality, sequences of transformations, repetitive rhythms, etc. All theses show the virtuosity of the players on their own and together and because of their characteristics, they are written in a very clear tonal language, a times, modal, oriental, or even pentatonic. The progression of the movements is governed by a desire for variety: between the fast opening and closing movements there is a sequence of relaxed andante -some of which are in an easy two-part canon style- in scherzzi -and these are the lightest, most airy fragments of the two Divertimenti. Recordings: Ilia Ioff and Ilia Teplyakov (violins), Columna Musica (1CM0156). Grabaciones: Ilia Ioff y Ilia Teplyakov (violines), Columna Musica (1CM0156). --Lluis Millet.

Harald Genzmer's composition Divertimento di danza for string orchestra clearly continues the baroque form of the divertimento. This light music * in the truest sense of the word * consisted of a sequence of loose movements with free forms and dance movements alternat-ing in varied succession. The divertimento comprised five to six movements. Genzmer kept to all these facts but he brought new life into the old forms. Though he did not compose in the old style, he respected certain rules of the traditional form. Ouverture * Allegro (Fugato) * Adagio * Presto (on an Old French dance) * Finale (on an English dance movement).

In the summer of 1939, Bela Bartok traveled to Switzerland to compose the Divertimento for String Orchestra within the two weeks in which he enjoyed the hospitality of his patron Paul Sacher. Inspired by the convivial atmosphere there, he felt like an old-world musician. The Divertimento is Bartok's highly original contribution to this traditionally entertaining genre of music. The title and three-part structure with two dance-like, vital outer movements allude to Mozart's time, whereas the cheerful alternation between solo group and tutti in the final movement tie up with the Baroque concerto grosso principle. Only the burnished glow of the middle movement suggests that Bartok found little of comfort in the world of his time just a few days before the outbreak of World War II.The Breitkopf Urtext edition is based on Bartok' autograph and the first edition of the score, which he meticulously revised. Subsequent emendations noted by Bartok in his personal copy were taken into account. The Breitkopf Urtext edition is based on Bartok's autograph and the first edition of the score, which he meticulously revised..

New edition (2020) of Einojuhani Rautavaara's (1928-2016) Divertimento for string orchestra is based on the composer's manuscript, incorporating corrections and comments by composer's hand in various sources. Written in 1953, Divertimento is one of Einojuhani Rautavaara's) early works in which the rhythms and melodies of Finnish folk music, especially the Otrobothnian style, have left a strong print. In this respect the work is a close relative of Rautavaara's popular work The Fiddlers. The themes and motives of the various movements are closely related, and aeolian and mixolydian modes lend the piece an archaic and rustic air. The duration is circa 9 minutes. The package includes one full scores and string parts (33221).

The unusual cast with flute (also piccolo and alto flute), cello and percussion (2 players with xylophone, metallophones, crotales, glockenspiel, woodblocks, drums and temple block) corresponds to the preference of Urusla Mamlok for harsh sounds and clearly audible lines and structures. The designations Toccata, Refrains, Variations and Epilogue reveal that their compositional thinking is determined not by pictorial but rather by purely musical suggestions. All four movements together are no more than 10 minutes long - as early as 1969, when the Divertimento was written, the composer strove for the utmost precision, scarcity and condensation, which was to form the basis of her whole further work. The Divertimento was first performed in 1975 by the Parnassus Ensemble at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

A wonderful work from the rich repertoire for string quartet with solo clarinet, Divertimento is full of folk, jazz and neoclassical influences. The piece was sketched on a train journey in 1926 and inspiration from this can be heard in the outer movements. It was later rescored for clarinet and string orchestra, forming Seiber's Concertino.

Adolf Busch performed around the world both as a solo violinist and with his Busch Quartet, founded in 1912. In 1944 Busch emigrated to the U.S. where he met, at the occasion of a performance of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the Russian-born musician Simeon Bellison. Stimulated by his playing, Busch wrote the rousing Divertimento Op. 62b shortly thereafter. The humorous, entertaining character of the work in six movements relies on historical genre models. The fusing of the three distinctive sound colors is achieved in a special manner by Busch.

A superb recording of five pieces for double wind quintet composed by Franco Cesarini. Suite Siciliana is a true tribute to this beautiful island, a piece composed by seven dances in the musical form typical of the baroque period. Divertimento, an early work of Franco Cesarini, illustrates the composer's love of popular song. A piece characterised by skillful instrumentation and meticulous attention to balance and form. Le Cortège du Roi Renaud is a suite in five parts based on tales that originate in southern European folk songs dating back as far as the 16th century. Pastorale de Provence, a suite in four movements, was written by Franco Cesarini in memory of the great Provençal composer Darius Milhaud. As the title says, Greek Folk Dances is entirely in the sign of Greek dances starting with a kalamatianos, followed by a zeibekiko. The piece ends with a hasapiko. A perfect mix of new and less new repertoire, perfectly composed and arranged for double wind quintet by Franco Cesarini and beautifully performed by the Rovereto Wind Ensemble!

Even in the days of Mozart, musicians liked to experiment with instrumental orchestration. Siegfried Schwab used this approach to arrange the popular Mozart trio, consisting of the movements Allegro - Menuetto - Adagio - Menuetto - Rondo, for chamber music ensemble. The bass part has been converted into a guitar part; that way the arrangement is accessible to all guitarists interested in Mozart, whose genius also shows in the Trios KV 439, but this time through chamber music.
