Dolly Suite Op. 56

Recueil Piano. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) composed the Dolly Suite to mark the birthday and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress. Suitable for intermediate to advanced pianists, Dolly is an enjoyable piece for Piano. Faure began receiving high quality musical instruction from age 10 at the Niedermeyer School. He eventually became a Piano pupil of Camille Saint-Saë ns. Faure 's career saw him succeed Theodore Dubois as organist at the Church of Madeleine in Paris and become professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, all the whilecomposing sublime works. The Dolly Suite comprises six short pieces; 1) Berceuse, 2) Mi-a-ou, 3) Dolly's Garden, 4) Kitty-Waltz, 5) Tenderness, and 6) The Spanish Walk. The complete suite takes about 15 minutes to perform. Favourtie French Melodies-In creating these dozen arrangements I am unashamedly cherry-picking from a long and rich seam of French music. I feel confident that younger players and those relatively new to the cello will enjoy my selection. Forgive my tongue-in-cheek title for the book French Baguettelles (I'm half French so I don't feel too guilty!) for the music herein has more than a hint of garlic about it. Although there are certainly serious overtones to one or two pieces there is a healthy dollop of silliness to lighten the mood. Apart from Sur la Pont d'Avignon which was reportedly written in the 15th century Frère Jacques which was a popular 18th century song and Tambourin which wasin all probability also written in the 18th century (Gossec did however live well into the 19th century) all of the pieces come from composers who lived in the Romantic period. Ravel and Debussy were of course known for their impressionistic colours though for the most part it is the accompaniments which reveal this characteristic most fully. I have endeavoured to keep the piano parts playable by mere mortals conscious of the fact that cello teachers may not possess a virtuosic piano facility but may nevertheless wish to turn their hand to accompanying pupils for concerts festivals exams etc. Many of the pieces were originally written for the piano either in its solo capacity (Ravel's Pavane Pour une Infante Défunte Chabrier's Idylle Satie's Gymnopedie 1 Debussy's La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin) or in duet form (Fauré's Berceuse from 'Dolly Suite'). Three orchestral pieces Bizet's L'Arlésienne Offenbach's Can-Can and Saint-Saëns's Danse Macabre lend a welcome dramatic overtone to the book while Franck's exquisite Panis Angelicus originally conceived as a choral piece rounds off the selection admirably. In the main it is the cello's capacity for lyricism that has steered my choice of music so really open up your sound and enjoy yourself with these ageless melodies.I wish you bonne chance!Baguette: a thin loaf of

From Fancies Pour Piano-This Sérénade is the first of 7 pieces collectively called 'Fancies' originally written for piano in 1915.Gabriel Marie Grovlez (1879-1944) was born in Lille Northern France in 1879 and died in war-torn Paris in 1944. From among his teachers who include Gédalge and Lavignac Fauré must surely rank as his strongest influence and this is readily heard in his small but significant oeuvre of solo piano pieces as well as his music for stage and chamber ensembles. Interestingly most of the piano music was published over a period of around a dozen years (1907-1919) and in the lull between these works and his Impressions (two pieces) of 1934 Grovlez wascompositionally preoccupied with songs and chamber pieces many of which languish patiently on the shelf awaiting a wholehearted appraisal. There is as well as his notable penchant for elegance and poetical lyricism a considerable wit to enjoy too (take Les nes The Donkeys from L'Almanach aux images for example) and indeed the fact that Grovlez's middle years were spent fulfilling the duties of assistant conductor and choir leader of the Opéra-Comique seems especially revealing of the man's musical personality and capacity for successfully intertwining serious and less serious genres.Grovlez was quite a cosmopolitan character; besides making a notable mark in his native country (he was latterly a professor of chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire) he travelled to the United States and Africa as well as across Europe. Although we tend to remember Grovlez today for his influence primarily as a composer in the mould of Fauré or Debussy bringing a quirky quality to some of his writing more than occasionally reminiscent of Poulenc it was as a conductor that Grovlez initially made an impact. Moreover we should not overlook the fact that he gave the inaugural performances of some highly treasured works by the likes of Ravel (Ma Mère l'Oye) and Fauré (Dolly Suite) a piano duet which has earned an especially important
