Duck Baker Stefan Grossman John Renbourn: Celtic Melodies For Fingerpicking

In these three audio lessons Duck Baker Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn teach six Celtic fingerstyle guitar solos. The three compact discs offer three full hours of note-by-note phrase-by-phrase instruction and all of the arrangements appear in the book in notation and tablature. Lesson One by Duck Baker teaches Planxty Irwin in Drop D tuning and Hewlett in standard tuning. Lesson Two by Stefan Grossman introduces Open G minor tuning for Logan Water and Captain Magan. Lesson Three by John Renbourn continues G minor tuning with arrangements of Mist Covered Mountains and The Orphan. This lesson concludes with five bonus tracks featuring performances by Davey Graham andDave Evans.

Guitarist educator and historian Stefan Grossman was a student of acoustic blues and gospel singer/guitarist Rev. Gary Davis. Beginning when he was 15 Stefan studied with Davis on weekends spending eight to ten hours at his house in Harlem absorbing all he could. While studying with Rev. Davis he met and studied with other country blues guitarists: Mississippi John Hurt Son House Skip James Mance Lipscomb and Fred McDowell.In the early 1960s Stefan formed the Even Dozen Jug Band (which also included such future luminaries as John Sebastian Steve Katz Maria Muldaur and David Grisman). In 1966 he worked with the alternate rock band the Fugs beforemoving to Great Britain in 1967. In 1969 he co-founded Kicking Mule Records with Ed Denson a label that showcased acoustic fingerstyle guitar. Many of these albums that Stefan produced during this period are finally being re-released on CD on his own label.From 1967 to 1987 Stefan Grossman lived in Great Britain and Italy and toured worldwide. He performed and recorded with John Renbourn for 15 years and they produced four albums together.Stefan's solo discography goes all the way back to 1966 when he recorded How to Play Blues Guitar with Rory Block (now released as Country Blues Guitar SGGW103). Since that time he has recorded over 30 solo albums and has written numerous books highlighting the playing of legendary bluesmen from the 1920s and 1930s.Nowadays Stefan divides his time between the USA and England. He continues to do concerts and workshops worldwide and remains one of the world's foremost authorities on acoustic blues guitar. As aspiring fingerpicking guitarists started expanding their horizons from folk, blues, and ragtime in the 1970s, it was only logical to look towards early jazz tunes as a vast source for new possibilities. For one thing, they could follow the same evolutionary path from ragtime to jazz that had been taken by pianists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Harlem stride players like James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. These musicians all composed in a variety of styles, but their most ambitious piano solos expanded on the classic ragtime format developed by the likes of Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb, using several strains that usually changed keys at least once. Morton, the self-proclaimed inventor of jazz, would record versions of tunes like King Porter Stomp and The Original Jelly Roll Blues that are similar to straight ragtime performances, and others where there is lots of room left for embellishment and jazz improvisation. The present collection is a bonanza for guitarists who want to tackle advanced arrangements along the lines of ragtime but featuring jazz age harmonies from the playing of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, WC Handy, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and other early jazz legends.
