Dedi cated to the luminary Steve Cowan, …empty mind, open heart… is a four-movement suite that centers around the intervals of a fifth and a tritone. Each movement is inspired by a quote from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. The opening movement is a meditation. The aleatoric rhythms and pacing of the notes are guided by the breathing of the performer, according to specific instructions in the score. Out of that atmosphere emerges a fluid, serene series of arpeggios in irregular rhythms in the second movement. Each new chord changes only one or two notes at a time in a gradual evolution over time. The third movement is a study in rhythm, sometimes dizzying. And the piece ends with a heartfelt, mostly quiet soliloquy.Dédié e à la sommité Steve Cowan, … esprit vide, cœur ouvert… est une suite en quatre mouvements centrée sur les intervalles d'une quinte et d'un triton. Chaque mouvement est inspiré d'une citation du Tao Te Ching de Lao Tseu. Le mouvement d’ouverture est une méditation. The lady of the house takes a look at an empty kitchen table and envisions a table setting including flowers and napkins with a particular design. Or an architect sees an empty lot and envisions a new apartment building in that space complete with interior and exterior colors and materials. Or anybody, including myself, takes a look at a blank piece of paper and starts drawing shapes on it......There's another very human tendency - and that's to want to attach meaning and significance to things in life - to a song, to an event, to something viewed - literally to anything. It's usually an automatic thing. Everything needs to mean something. This tendency to attach meaning is also a kind of creativity, I suppose.
