Dit werk
is geschreven in opdracht
van de Miyazaki
Prefectural Police Band
uit Miyazaki, gelegen op
het Japanse eiland
Kyushu. Sano, de muzikaal
leider van het orkest, is
afgestudeerd aan de
Musashino Academia
Musicae, waar ook Satoshi
Yagisawa studeerde. Hij
vroeg Yagisawa een
meeslepende fanfare van
ongeveer één minuut
te schrijven. Omdat
dirigent Sano een
gerenommeerd koperblazer
is, heeft Yagisawa de
welluidende klanken van
het koper ten volle
benut. Fanfare
Exuberante kan als
openingswerk voor elk
concert
dienen.
Ein
Dirigent gab dem
Komponisten eine
brillante einminütige
Fanfare in Auftrag, die
man bei jedem Anlass als
Eröffnungsstück
spielen können sollte.
Um dies zu erfüllen,
verwendete Yagisawa die
ganze Palette der
Klangmöglichkeiten der
Blechblasinstrumente. Und
das Resultat ist eine
sehr abwechslungsreich
gestaltete, kurze
Fanfare, die den
gewünschten Zweck
bestens erfüllt!

NotesAmong the many
stories in Greek
mythology, Apollo holds a
unique place as a complex
Olympian god known for
truth, prophecy, healing,
poetry, plague,
knowledge, light and
music. Although some
stories reveal a
different side to his
character, Apollo was
widely regarded to hold a

his lyre. Apollo Arise is
an energetic and spirited
work for band, ideal for

uplifting and exuberant
melodic material lead the
group on a sonic journey
to capture the joy and
light music can bring to
both the audience and
performer. From the
dynamic opening fanfare
to the soaring motifs and
rhythms that follow,
Apollo Arise provides a
wonderful opportunity for
the ensemble to reach for
new musical heights in
their performance! Â
 Rehearsal Notes and
SuggestionsThe opening
twenty-four measures of
the work are important
for the rest of the work
to unfold successfully.
Encourage the ensemble to
play with a unified
articulation style,
maintain a proper
balance, and establish a
consistent tempo through
this section as several
recurring rhythms must be
performed consistently.
Measure 38 features a
trumpet solo, so be sure
that the rest of the
ensemble balances their
line to support the solo
instrument. In the
section that begins at m.
67, there is an optional
solo opportunity for
trumpet and trombone.
Both of these sections
provide nice contrast
against the full ensemble
sections that are present
in the work. The section
at m. 81 includes a
call-and-response section
between woodwind, brass
and percussion groups. Be
sure that as groups
enter, the tempo remains
consistent and that the
winds articulation style
is unified and
complimentary to the
percussion. As the
opening fanfare returns
at m. 101, remind the
ensemble to play with
consistent style, balance
and tempo as they did in
the opening. As the
ensemble begins the part
of the journey with
Apollo at m. 110, the
music contains unique
layers that must work
together to be effective
and set up the material
that begins at m. 127.
Encourage the group to
play so they can hear all
other lines, and allow
their energy to grow into
a focused musical
celebration by the final
note. Thank you in
advance for your support
of this music, and I wish
you and your ensemble

the title suggests, there
should be a
tongue-in-cheek aspect to
the performance of this
piece with the idea that
it doesn't take itself
too seriously. Close
attention should be paid
to staccato notes, making
sure not to play them too
short and clipped,
keeping in mind that a
staccato quarter note
should have the length of
an eighth note and not
the length of a sixteenth
note. Although the piece
is a march, it needn't
conform to any strict
interpretation of what a
march should be. Some of
the tongued eighth-note
passages may need to be
double-tongued, depending
on tempo, using the
Dig-A-Duck method. For
instance at m. 34 the
repeated eighth notes
might be tongued
dig-a-da-duck,
dig-a-duck, da dot dot.
Slurred eighth-note
passages should follow
the curve of the line,
getting slightly louder
as notes ascend and
slightly softer as they
descend. Measure 39
through m. 51 will have a
somewhat chaotic feel, so
go with the flow! The
sparsely orchestrated
passage at m. 68 is
understated--perhaps a
little spacey in keeping
with our theme--and not
to be overplayed until
the crescendo at m. 88,
when we return to
business as usual.
Trumpets show off again
(rarely a problem for
trumpet players) on the
D. S. back to m. 6. On
the Coda, another
disjointed-sounding
theme, again departing
from any strict
interpretation of a
march--again, making sure
that the staccatos are
not too clipped--is
followed by a repeat of
the main theme, this time
layered. Care should be
taken to balance the
entrances of the layered
instrument groups as they
enter. An exuberant final
four measures puts the
cherry on top. Percussion
can play out for the most
part, very little
subtlety required.
Overall, this piece is
meant to be FUN, for both
the performers and the
audience!. As the

commissioned by Eric
Bruskin, a resident of
Philadelphia, USA, in
memory of his mother.
Eric had a longstanding
enthusiasm for my work,
and I was touched to be
the person he approached
for a task which is both
a privilege and a
daunting responsibility.
In a sense, no music can
ever measure up to the
weight of love or the
hope of consolation
vested in it under such
circumstances - but in
memory I carry the deaths
of both my own parents,
and I was able to draw
upon that. Eric's
fondness for my Cello
Sonata (itself written in
memoriam) led him to ask
that I include a solo
'cello part in the new
work - but his attachment
also to my polyphonic
sacred choral writing
meant that he wanted a
centrepiece which would
be both a showcase of
that approach and the
celebration of a life
well lived. Therefore,
the seven movements of At
First Light arrange
themselves as a series of
slow meditations
surrounding an exuberant
9-minute motet in which
the lamenting cello falls
temporarily
silent.
Eric's
Jewish faith meant that
approaching an agnostic
humanist brought up
within the Anglican
tradition was hardly free
of problems! Gradually,
though, I was able to win
his approval for a
collated mosaic of texts.
This embraces some
liturgical Latin
(necessary for the motet)
as the shared preserve of
broad western culture in
general, but balances it
with a secular approach
to loss, celebration,
remembrance and the many
shades of our mourning
those whom we see no
longer. Eric was adamant
that he did not want the
title Requiem; but what
has emerged is still a
form of semi-secular
Requiem in all but name,
taking its title instead
from a phrase in the poem
by Thomas Blackburn set
as the third movement.
This seemed to suggest
succinctly how the loss
of one very close to us
is an awakening into an
unfamiliar world where
everything is changed.
Following the exuberant
central movement, the
texts by the
Lebanese-born Kahlil
Gibran and the US,
Kentuckian poet Wendell
Berry first address the
departed loved one
directly, then place us
within an imaginary
funeral cortege, where
the perennial and
universal in human
experience become
personal without
subscribing explicitly to
any particular faith (or
lack of it). The final
text of all is a
translation of a Hebraic
prayer, requested and
provided by Eric Bruskin,
which serves to mirror
its Latin counterpart
heard at the
outset.
Throughout
, the lamenting cello
represents a commentary
on the experience
articulated in the text.
It evokes and, in a
sense, tries to embrace
and sanctify the
individual existential
journeys of the bereft,
as they in turn seek to
make their own sense of
what the short-lived
Second World War poet
Alun Lewis called 'the
unbearable beauty of the
dead' (movement
5).
In a modern
world hostage to ever
greater menace,
displacement, bloodshed
and anguish, I hope
fervently that this music
not only brings a measure
of solace to the person
who commissioned it, but
also makes its own small
contribution to bailing
out the sinking ship of
humanity. $22.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

the title suggests, there
should be a
tongue-in-cheek aspect to
the performance of this
piece with the idea that
it doesn't take itself
too seriously. Close
attention should be paid
to staccato notes, making
sure not to play them too
short and clipped,
keeping in mind that a
staccato quarter note
should have the length of
an eighth note and not
the length of a sixteenth

is a march, it needn't
conform to any strict
interpretation of what a
march should be. Some of
the tongued eighth-note
passages may need to be
double-tongued, depending
on tempo, using the
Dig-A-Duck method. For
instance at m. 34 the
repeated eighth notes
might be tongued
dig-a-da-duck,
dig-a-duck, da dot dot.
Slurred eighth-note
passages should follow
the curve of the line,
getting slightly louder
as notes ascend and
slightly softer as they
descend. Measure 39
through m. 51 will have a
somewhat chaotic feel, so
go with the flow! The
sparsely orchestrated
passage at m. 68 is
understated--perhaps a
little spacey in keeping
with our theme--and not
to be overplayed until
the crescendo at m. 88,
when we return to
business as usual.
Trumpets show off again
(rarely a problem for
trumpet players) on the
D. S. back to m. 6. On
the Coda, another
disjointed-sounding
theme, again departing
from any strict
interpretation of a
march--again, making sure
that the staccatos are
not too clipped--is
followed by a repeat of
the main theme, this time
layered. Care should be
taken to balance the
entrances of the layered
instrument groups as they
enter. An exuberant final
four measures puts the
cherry on top. Percussion
can play out for the most
part, very little
subtlety required.
Overall, this piece is
meant to be FUN, for both
the performers and the

1. My Beautiful
Island (in the present) -
The character is that of
a young woman who sings
joyfully and exuberantly
of the beauty of her
island - a magnificent
paradise. 2. Oh Home of
Sweet Tranquility (20
years later) - The woman
is beginning to realize
that her cherished island
is beginning to disappear
due to the encroaching
waves, storms and ever
increasing heat. The
bloom of her idealism and
youth has been replaced
with something more
dreadful. 3. The Song
Itself We Have Forgotten
(an additional 20 years
later) - The island
clearly is doomed due to
rising seas resulting in
the evacuation of the
entire island. She is
experiencing a slow
simmering shock, is
dis-regulated, mumbling,
and thoroughly
disbelieving in what is
taking place. Out in the
distance I imagined an
ocean liner on the
horizon. She’s
standing on a long line
to be transported to the
ship that will take her
to an unknown destination
and destiny. 4. Aubade -
(a love poem welcoming or
lamenting the arrival of
dawn) As expressed by a
seagull riding the wind
above the ocean, my take
of it relates to the arc
of universal existence -
Beginning, Middle (life
expressed), End.
Performance Note:
Island Elegy and Aubade
may be performed by 3
sopranos - one for each
song- or by one soprano.
In the latter case the
final Aubade may be
performed via a
previously recorded
multitrack rendering of
all three parts or two
parts with the soprano
singing the top part.
Alternatively, the
pianist can accompany the
soprano, (who sings the
top line) by playing the
bottom two parts on a
melodica, piano or
electric keyboard.

Charles. The
harmonic turns and piano
configurations in La vie
anterieure - the former
life - seem almost
exuberantly lyrical. At
the beginning, the
archaic sounds and words
of the male choir conjure
up a dream world that is
soon flooded with the
power of the waves and
the rich polyphonic
harmony of the choir and
the piano. With the
outcry C'est la que j'ai

there] which expresses
the fervent yearning to
return to a past life,
the collective
desperately reinforces
the longing for the past.
Once more, the women's
choir conjures up this
lost paradise in an

before the desolate
sadness is pierced by the
power of the music of the
piano postlude, creating
a moment that is
completely in the

strictly motoric rhythmic

Commissioned by the

pianist Xiaohui
Yang’s Carnegie

is a one-movement work of
approximately 11 minutes,
divided into three main
parts that are played
without significant
break.Ballade alternates
sections where the
performer is invited to
apply great interpretive
freedom, especially on
the temporal plane, with
contrasting sections that
are quite precise and
rhythmic. Although
carefully notated, the
“freerâ€
sections (often marked
rubato) certainly allude
at times to the kind of
repertoire that is
familiar to most concert
pianists, doing so not by
way of quotation but by
the type of expressivity,
affect, and even
passagework. Thus, the
performer should think of
the score as a

one’s sense of

fearlessly and
exuberantly, but also
