Pres ented in a highly praised new production by Glyndebourne Opera in 2009, this edition of Purcell's third semi-opera, The Fairy Queen, offers a new and definitive version of words and music prepared by two leading scholars in the field. The playtext, anonymously adapted from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, is printed in full, and the role of the various sources, and the relationship of the manuscript theatre score to the printed word-books of 1692 and 1693, are thoroughly reappraised. The other sources include music manuscripts which have not previously been examined, and which prove to have a significant bearing on the musical text. Full account is taken of the varied instrumental resources and conventions accessible to the Restoration composer, reflected in the multi-purpose performing material for the edition which is available for rental (HL390).

This distinguished composer (and authority on Celtic and Tibetan music) wrote many songs performed by illustrious singers, including Kathleen Ferrier. His songs include two with recorder obbligato - Fairy Workers with sopranino recorder and piano (an Irishy jeu d'esprit), and The Philosopher Bird with descant recorder and piano, (a setting of a mysterious poem especially written by his famous poet son Kevin).

A visit to the opera whetted the composers creative appetite to explore the fairy-tale-like theme of Knight Raimunds love for the beautiful mermaid Melusine, which provided the basis for Mendelssohns fourth concert overture. As usual, Mendelssohn worked out the composition in his mind before committing it to paper, a task he most likely began towards the end of March 1833. The works premiere performance took place in London on 7 April 1834; the revised version was given its first account in Leipzig on 23 November 1835. Its ranking as No. 4 of the concert overtures was assigned around 1857 in a posthumous edition.(Ralf Wehner in the Study Edition of the Mendelssohn Work Catalogue).
