The extremely compositional versatility of Enjott Schneider is evident even in the small(est) form of choral music. In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), the award-winning composer combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. Imbued with calmness and sensuality, the church music composition is based on the text of a Latin antiphon from the Maundy Thursday liturgy. According to the composer, these anonymous verses represent for him the central statement of Christian faith: Ubi Caritas - Where there is love, there is God!In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), Enjott Schneider combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. Zolt ¡n Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue. Diese Ausgabe entstand unter der Mitwirkung von Lajos Bárdos.

This first collection of five carols samples the vast spectrum of festive musical fare that still lies at the heart of the English Christmas tradition. The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound†to create the portmanteau word “sound together†or “harmony.†The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

The fact that Naji Hakim's compositional oeuvre is, by his own account, deeply rooted in his personal faith and dedicated to the glory of God and the joy of mankind is evident not only in the text of the sacred choral piece Exultate Deo for eight-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB). Hakim also manages to capture the textual content of the Latin verses from Psalm 81 by means of musical imagery with various madrigalisms, e.g. with extended melismatic melody lines and distinctive rhythms. This technically demanding sacred choral work was inspired by the Basque folk song Adieu fillette de Bayonne which the Lebanon-born composer already used in the first movement of his concerto for txistu (= Basque wooden flute) and orchestra.

The “Missa brevis in E flat minor†for mixed choir a cappella has been composed in the tradition of the short Mass (without Credo) and can be easily managed by most choirs. Thanks to its conciseness, it is suitable for use in church services, while its delightful harmonic layout and consciously simple melodies (with clear allusions to folk music) also make it perfect for concert performance.†œMy music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings’ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard‘.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.“ MÃ¥rten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of “Carmenâ€, one of the most prominent womens’ vocal ensembles in Sweden. He currently teaches choral conducting and music theory as well as giving vocal tuition at the Bolandgymnasiet and Musikskolan in his home town of Uppsala. Please find a recording of the “Missa brevis†performed by the Ensemble Sonoro, Neil Ferris (Conductor) by clicking on Multimedia.

Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. A demanding work for good choirs, duration ca. 16 minutes.

Hein rich von Herzogenberg's interest in the motet form based on a cantus firmus can be traced back to the middle years of his tenure in Leipzig (1875-1885). For three of the four chorale motets (Nos. 1, 3, 4) he chose hymns which were also known as traditional melodies outside a liturgical context and, in two cases (Nos. 3 and 4), were sung by both faiths. Each of the four chorale motets are concerned with suffering and death. With regard to the size of the choir, Herzogenberg envisioned a large mixed choir. Therefore, larger choirs can also sing the motets a cappella.
