This fantastic arrangement of dances from the 17th century Renaissance period includes three movements, beginning with La Bourée, a lively and spirited dance. The beautiful Pavane alternates between major and minor tonalities. The final movement, Spagnoletta and Courante, is in a lilting 6/8 time. Tenor drum is optional, but highly effective and approachable. A delightful journey into the past and an excellent way to develop independence between sections.

Mechanical Study III The three 'mechanical' studies of this set of five all employ a clear structural technique based on regularity. The first presents a stream of fast semiquavers in duple metre which constantly interplays with short motivic figures; the second offers a 14-bar ostinato (melody) that begins at the top of the keyboard and gradually descends to the bottom; around this ostinato a sustained counter-melody weaves. The third presents a igorous, stomping 9/8 dance rhythm which interacts with lengthening patterns in the second voice. The two 'fantastical' studies which intersperse the 'mechanical' contrast greatly with them: much freer in expression, tempo and rhythm, they evoke the outdoors and the calming presence of nature. The first moves like wafts of the breeze; the second, more complex, is the heart of the work. Its deep contemplations are several times interrupted by a modest refrain, drawing it back in the 'real world' - that of the three 'mechanical' studies which surround it. This refrain is also a mediator, its last appearance as gentle as the breeze evoked in the second study.

Dance of Uzume is a concertino that is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger toward her brother Susanowa, the storm god, the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. The goddess of joy, Uzume, succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu’s curiosity and with her appearance, the light on earth returns. This fantastic new original work will make a much needed addition to the advanced repertoire for saxophone and concert band. Het werk is gebaseerd op een Japanse mythe: uit woede op haar broer Susanowa, de god van de storm, verschuilt de zonnegodin Amaterasuzich in een grot. De vreugdegodin Uzume weet de godin van de zon echter met een wilde dans uit de grot te lokken. Het gelach van de andere goden wekt namelijk de nieuwsgierigheid van Amaterasu en met haar verschijning komt hetlicht terug op aarde.
