Fear Thou Not

'Fear Thou Not? was commissioned by the Swedish women's vocal ensemble 'Les Jolies? (gold medalists in 2002 Choir Olympics.The piece depicts how man can change from doubting to believing, led by the Father's voice which both comforts and admonishes.'My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as 'so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings' but also as 'the happiest classical music that we have ever heard'.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.'Mårten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of 'Carmen?, one of the most prominent womens' vocal ensembles in Sweden. I have always loved the book of Psalms. The range of human emotions conveyed in that book is so real. Joy, sorrow, fear, hope, worry, confidence, anxiety, assurance and much more spring out of those wonderful verses. Yet underneath all of that is a bedrock faith that the cries of exhilaration and anguish will be heard and answered. In this collection I selected 13 verses from Psalms. On each I set a melodic line to the verse and then composed 9 variations on that line. Many of the arrangements were written and recorded on a 7 string guitar; however, every piece may be played quite successfully on a 6 string guitar. Where a low A or B appears in the notation, I have written a substitute note in the tablature which will work on a 6 string guitar. These solos may be played in concert, recital or in worship celebrations. I hope you enjoy them as they are very meaningful to me. Includes access to online audio.

Music played an enormous role in the works of William Shakespeare while his own sonnets poems and soliloquies have provided continuing inspiration for many composers through the years. Some pieces have never appeared before in print such as those by Kevin Olson Bernard Hughes and John Gardner. These songs truly are a joy to perform with some relatively simple arrangements that are purely fun to sing while some more complex settings that will be thoroughly rewarding for choirs and audiences alike. A total of 26 fantastic works comprise The Novello Shakespeare Choral Collection which would work as a wonderful concert programme on its own or could provide a wealth of options for choirs looking to expand their repertoire with a range of unique settings. Richard Wagner put his supreme effort, as well as his earnings, into constructing the perfect festival theater in the Bavarian town of Bayreuth where his masterpiece, the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, could be performed in a manner which would conform to his vision of how the drama should unfold. Wagner's own perception was that the unique and revolutionary character of his monumental tetralogy necessitated a special theater — one where the difficulties of staging an expansive drama could be surmounted, where changes of scene could be effected without halting the performance for vast lengths of time. Der Ring des Nibelungen, which is based on a medieval German epic, the Nibelungenlied, and Norse mythology, enlarged the expressive powers of German Romantic opera; today it also gives testimony to Wagner's willingness to venture into new areas for inspirational material. The third opera of the cycle, Siegfried, reproduced here in full score, presents the story of a youthful Germanic hero of legendary proportions, a young man without experience of fear, who slays the reptilian hoarder of ill-gotten, powerful golden treasures and rescues a banished goddess from fiery captivity. Performed during the heyday of Bismarck's Realpolitik, following decades of revolutionary and anarchic fervor, Siegfried is reputed to have social and political implications. In The Perfect Wagnerite, George Bernard Shaw discusses the opera in allegorical terms, and describes the heroic Siegfried as 'a born anarchist, the ideal of Bakoonin, an anticipation of the 'overman' of Nietzsche.
