Bartholdy: St. Paul
Op.36: SATB: Score Divers [Partition] Barenreiter
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio – St. Paul Op.36...(+)
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio – St. Paul Op.36 – in 1836 at the age of twenty-seven. The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version which at the same time served as the basis for the published version was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham. The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner who later denigratedMendelssohn was full of admiration. Today St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music. This Urtext edition of the oratorio edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed. This gives not only an insight into the history of the composition of the work but also with the complete performing material into the performance of the original version. The full score and vocal score (BA9071-90) include the German and English texts of the oratorio. The vocal score is by Mendelssohn. Works Volume III: Organ: Orgue [Partition] Novello & Co Ltd.

Mendelssohn produced an early work for Organ in 1837 but it was a London music publishing firm who commissioned the first of his mature Organ works. The second half of the commissioned pieces are published in this volume. Mendelssohn himself saved all his manuscripts and they have survived in libraries in Berlin and Krakow providing the subtitle of this book.Eleven movements are included here all written in 1844 and 1845. What were originally commissioned as ‘Voluntaries’ were changed at the composer’s request to ‘Sonatas’. Whether one considers these movements as drafts and sketches or as distinct musical entities in their own right the works are not identical tothe final printed versions. For those who appreciate or study the Mendelssohn Organ oeuvre this volume is of immense interest. While the Organ never completely fell from grace as the instrument of church and religious music it is the editor’s belief that in the century dividing JS Bach from these works of Mendelssohn fashion and church practice had greatly diminished its importance and few works of real note were produced. Mendelssohn was introduced to the Organ early in his prodigious career and found a warm audience for his Organ performances in Engand to which he returned nine times over nearly twenty years.

In 1832 the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony the ?Italian? based on Mendelssohn?s experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833 conducted by the composer.Today the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks though at its premiere and both the following performances the work was not entirely positively received.Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834 he revised the last three movements but didnot complete this revision. To this day the early version of the ?Italian? is the one played everywhere whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter?s critical new edition edited by Christopher Hogwood includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833 together with the last three movements in the composer?s revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version.- A famous work for the Mendelssohn anniversary year in a new Urtext edition.- With the well-known early version and the composer?s revised version.- Includes an informative foreword in English and German.- With facsimile pages.- Full score & performance material (BA9094) available for sale.
