The contemporary Lithuanian composer Kazys Daugėla created Festive Rock in celebration of the 2003 Lithuanian national holiday. The premier took place at a concert with not one, but two concert bands being eluminated by the many colours of a concert closing firework display. This work of festive atmosphere was written in 2000 for symphonic band, then the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra. In this piece, László Dubrovay (*1943) parts with his special, hallmark concert band effects; rather, lively vibrations enriched with colliding seconds and distant overtones are brought to the foreground. The special sound is coloured by ornamental trills, appearingeven in batches, and vibrating collisions in the high registers. The performance is rendered even more unique by the outer trumpets on both sides of the space. The trumpets and the flugelhorns can be divided into ten parts altogether, thus, the piece can be played by one ensemble or several bands together, as it is usual at the conclusion of large-scale festivals. This composition may be a great choice for festive concerts, since it is a solemn, innovative, and - by virtue of the free arrangement of the performing space- special work at the same time.

Origi nal Composition This festive, original composition from Hart Morris is a celebrative piece that makes extensive use of mart-lift and mallets throughout. Though the middle section calms somewhat, the tempo does not change as the more mellow sounds of handchimes enter, surrounded by brief mallet and thumb damp passages. This segment ends with a return of the opening theme (in a different key), played in one clef, answered in the other, building to a big finish.

Robert Thurston’s enormously attractive writing for band and his sure command of contemporary harmonic and rhythmic devices give this three movement composition by terrific band and audience appeal.
