The music of Richard Wagner can be daunting to beginning pianists, but this collection offers an accessible approach to the famous nineteenth-century composer's works. The arrangements focus on Wagner's melodies and style, presenting manageable excerpts from the more abstract works in simplified keys and with suggested fingerings. More than 30 pieces consist chiefly of selections from Wagner's operas. Highlights include the thrilling Ride of the Valkyries from Die Valküre, the second of the four Ring Cycle operas. Other pieces from the epic musical series include Siegfried the Hero from Siegfried and Song of the Rhine Daughters from Götterdämmerung. The collection also features pieces from Parsifal,Tannhäuser, The Flying Dutchman,Rienzi, Lohengrin, and Tristan und Isolde, as well as other works. Each selection features a brief Introduction that provides historical context and, in some cases, suggestions for performance.

Wagner spent the year 1860 with his wife in Paris. Three concerts with excerpts from his works had been held at the beginning of the year. Still entirely unknown in France, these pieces drew a great deal of attention and polarized the music-loving public. Wagner's main artistic goal at that time was to bring about a first performance of Tristan und Isolde. Although this plan came to naught in Paris, the imperial order to have Tannhauser played raised the tempting prospect of an international dissemination of his earlier works. The year 1860 also finally saw a decisive development in Wagner's struggle for amnesty, which had languished for several years. Wagner was once again allowed to tread on the soil of German states (with the exception of Saxony) for the purpose of performing his works.

1870: a calm year for Wagner
ISBN 9783765104220. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. German.
Wagner spent the year 1870 almost exclusively in the idyllically situated country house of Tribschen near Lucerne. He dedicated himself to artistic creation (Siegfried, Gotterdammerung). In March Wagner began seriously thinking about settling in Bayreuth in order to realize his festival idea. In July Hans and Cosima von Bulow were divorced, and Wagner was able to wed his life companion in Lucerne on 25 August. His reclusive life did not prevent him from taking active part in the events around him. To begin with, there were performances of his works, in particular the world premiere of Walkure in Munich. The main topic of the second half of the year was the Franco-Prussian War, which was heartily applauded by Wagner. The volume contains 273 letters, 50 of which are printed here for the first time, and 23 others published in their entirety for the first time.

The main part of Supplement Volume 12 features the predecessor of the Grandes Études de Paganini, a series of six études written after Paganini between 1838 and 1840, and referred to by Liszt as transcendent performance (Études d'exécution transcendante d'apres Paganini). The series was inspired not only by the virtuoso violinist and composer's Caprices and Violin Concerto in B minor but also by Schumann's Paganini Études, which Liszt presumably encountered thanks to Clara Wieck at the beginning of 1838. The volume also includes the first and second solo piano versions of Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (1840 and 1841), which Liszt composed a number of times in several versions,as well as two Wagner transcriptions and the first versions of adaptations of two works by Russian composers. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously with the Complete Edition volume in cloth-bound, its paperback for practical purposes is also published, the contents of which, except for the critical notes, is identical with the Complete Edition volume. This piece is an ideal gateway for transitioning from method books to performance music. It is inspired by the shaped-note tradition of the early 19th century, which served as a major influence in the development of truly American music. Perfect for the first contest and every concert!
