Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for brass band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. For added effect this work can also be performed with a wordless chorus, with parts being available separately.

In Memoriam: For the Fallen was commissioned by Bolsover District Council for the Bolsover Brass Summer School 2014. It is a setting for narrator and band of Laurence Binyon’s (1869-1943) poem, For the Fallen, which was first published in The Times in September 1914. Binyon was dismayed at the outbreak of war and especially concerned by the large number ofcasualties suffered by the British Expeditionary Force in the early months of the battle on the Western Front. Too old to enlist, he volunteered as a hospital orderly in France. The poem is known world-wide as the famous fourth stanza (They shallgrow not old…) has become a regular part of Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day services.In Memoriam: For the Fallen is a musical accompaniment to the poem, shadowing the mood of each stanza.In Memoriam: For the Fallen is geschreven in opdracht van de Bolsover District Council, voor de Bolsover Brass Summer School 2014. Written in response to the tragic events in Kiev in 2014, this music draws on the old Ukrainian folk song Plyve Kacha, which became an anthem for many protestors as a symbol of national pride while also mourning the fallen. Described by the composer as Arabian Dances meets Moscow, 1941, the music is incredibly powerful yet introspective. Quotes of the Ukrainian National Anthem add to the intensity of the music, which features the instrumentalists singing in 4-part harmony at the very end of the piece. Absolutely stunning.
