About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

Commissione d to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the state of West Virginia, Forever Free incorporates indigenous elements of the state's musical heritage, capturing a robust and celebratory spirit. Cast in a single movement in three sections, the title is inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi” (“Mountaineeers forever free”). The work is unified at the outset and closing by a ceremonial fanfare that is based on thematic figures from the state song West Virginia Hills. A contrasting middle section features a lyric variant accompanied by a militaristic snare drum and timpani cadence, before all thematic elements are combined for the buoyant and festive conclusion. Duration: 4:25.

Uplifting and bright, this fine overture was written for the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds. Images of flight are suggested through the composer's use of rhythm and tempo. The middle section has solo lines for trumpet and clarinet and is beautifully scored utilizing the many different colors available to the wind medium. Various cross cueings allow the conductor/director freedom to tailor the piece to fit a particular ensemble. An excellent choice for high school and community bands alike.

Music has powers to summon forth the best in mankind. This was one of the maxims of the conductor Rafael Kubelik , whose Munich career is now being celebrated in this picture book. His performances were noted for their innate musicality, impressive vitality and rigorous yet highly emotional readings. Kubelik was a humanist and homo politicus who stood at the helm of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1961 to 1979 as its principal conductor and made regular guest appearances with the orchestra for six years thereafter. His era has gone down in the history of the orchestra. Now, in memory of the tenth anniversary of his death on 11 August [2006], this picture book recalls Kubelik's legendary years in Munich , where this Czech emigre found a second home. Freedom was more than just a word for Kubelik :Only in a spirit of mutual respect, friendship, and love can we human beings live freely. The new book, with its bibliophile appearance, opens with an essay by the former executive director of the Bavarian Broadcasting System, Albert Scharf . It also contains an interview with Martin Kubelik , the conductor's son, as well as writings by Rafael Kubelik and articles about him in German and English. Rounding off the volume are an epilogue by Mariss Jansons , the orchestra's current principal conductor, and a brief biography of Rafael Kubelik .
