Charm ingly packed with wit, grace, symbolism, and irony, Shulamit Ran’s THE FLIGHT OF THE BRAVE CHICKEN celebrates the life and work of a graphic artist and illustrator (who played clarinet), who lost her battle with cancer as a young adult. The six-minute duo begins as a dramatic dialog for bass clarinet and piccolo, gradually evolving to peaceful resolution for flute and clarinet. The work may be performed with projections of the original art panels that inspired the work.Brave Chicken was a character developed by Nina Frenkel, gifted illustrator, graphicartist, and beloved friend to many, who passed away at the age of 43 having lost adifficult battle with cancer. Her parents, Marcel and Anne Frenkel, approached mein May 2017 about composing a short work in Nina’s memory, suggesting that it bebased on four delightful panels that Nina had painted in 2014 before she knew of therecurrence of the disease.Titled “Brave Chicken Meets the Ogre,†“Brave Chicken Fights the Ogre,†“BraveChicken Flees to Safety,†and “Brave Chicken in the Healing Hut,†the four panelsdepict a progression from darkness to light. And while my composition does notattempt to follow the four panels literally, I did aim to create two distinctly differentmusical characters who are posed against one another with one clearly perceived asdominant and threatening, and trace the evolving change in the balance of power, and with it the journey from darkness to light.Inspired by the knowledge that Nina herself greatly enjoyed playing the clarinet, Idecided to pair bass clarinet with piccolo, eventually switching the piccolo over toflute, with clarinet appearing in time for the work’s peaceful conclusion. Though I hadnever met Nina, I felt honored to compose this work in her memory.

John Luther Adams' The Light That Fills the World for Chamber Ensemble (6 players). Duration: 13 minutes. The Light That Fills the World was written in late winter and early spring when - following the long darkness of winter - the world is still white and filled with new light. If the unrelenting texture of this music embodies stasis, I hope its prevalent tone evokes the ecstatic. The title of the piece is borrowed from an Inuit song which sings of the close relationship between beauty and terror, risk and revelation. - John Luther Adams, Fairbanks, Alaska, August 1999 Includes Score and parts plus spiral-bound keyboard part.

The Ascent from Darkness, by Rossano Galante, pays homage to the human race that endured the pandemic. He creates a musical landscape that depicts strength, tenacity, and compassion. The main theme, which is broad and lyrical, is stated by horns and winds. As the piece develops, the theme is played by full, chordal brass accompanied by rhythmic woodwind lines. The B section is lightly orchestrated with a solo oboe accompanied by the clarinet section, slowly growing to a tutti statement. The piece recapitulates with bold brass chords. The work ends as it begins, quietly incorporating the first motive. (4:00).

The inspirational foundation is the Emily Dickinson poem of the same name. Through five movements, each named after a phrase from the poem, Hedwig builds his dialogue slowly in intensity. The music moves, generally, from darkness to light, with occasional moments of reflection and conflict along the way as the drama unfolds...The musical language combines elements of traditional musical melody and tonality, with atonality, minimalism, and even hints of jazz...traces of traditional religious liturgical musical forms and idioms, as well. (Chattanooga Symphony and Opera program notes) For advanced performers.

In this second album composed by top arranger Hans-Gunter Heumann ('Klavierspielen - mein schonstes Hobby', 'Pianotainment') for solo piano, he takes a look at the bright and the dark sides of emotions. Twelve emotional Piano Pieces reflect the whole spectrum from bright to dark, light and shadow. The compositions take the listeners into the land of 'minimal music', combining percussive and meditative elements with wonderful melodic aspects. The gloomy and mystical character of these expressive compositions will fascinate every advanced piano player and be with them forever.

Arranged for SATB choir, two keyboards, strings, and optional harp, with soprano, tenor (optional) and baritone soloists, this fresh and unorthodox interpretation reflects on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. This movement has no soprano part, it is soloist above and ATB below, giving a rich, dark quality to the music. The tenors and basses (divisi) begin this movement, declaiming “Dies irae, dies illa.†Two soloists begin in the “Flanders fields†text above. There is an option for three soloists as the piece evolves. (Soprano, tenor and baritone, the composer gives some options for this.) Soon the choir takes up the poem, yet the Latin text occasionally appears and continues, moving toward a climax on the text “We are the Dead, Short days ago We lived.†As the music descends from the high point, the English poem continues, with the choir very softly commenting “Dies irae†as the movement ends. Duration 5:36.
