Deep-Sky Objects is a cycle of love songs set in the distant future, exploring intergalactic longing and desire. It is scored for soprano, piano quintet, and pre-recorded electronic sounds. When the piano quintet was in its heyday, the subject that permeated so many of the great Romantic song cycles was that of longing and lost love. Deep-Sky Objects transfers this trope to the outer reaches of the universe In the cycle a woman sings of her lover who is far away in a remote planet in some unspecified star system. At moments she remembers a time when they were together, but mostly she longs for him and stoically imagines that his presence, even so remote, gives her hope:I can live in the worldWith your love becauseI know you existat the end of the black universeThe electronics part often references various “sounds from space,” from pulsars (which are routinely converted into audio signals by astronomers), the signals of made-made satellites, actual audio of the Huygens probe landing on Saturn's moon, Titan, as well as many sounds suggestive of the eerie, remote and unfathomable reaches of deep space. Each of the ten songs is preceded by a short sample, or incipit, which creates micro-compositions based on the title of each song. The text is written specifically for Deep-Sky Objects, by Sarah Manguso.–Sebastian Currier.

Radius goes far beyond traditional ring modulation. With precise control over the balance and frequency ratios of both sidebands, you'll have more advanced control than with any ring mod that has come before. Organic, complex harmonic structures, bell-like tones, metallic textures, frequency shifting, soft tremolo, and bubbly phaser sounds are all on tap. Pitch tracking, a push-to-tune footswitch, and picking dynamics make it responsive and predictable in concert. In the studio, Radius has well-spaced controls for tabletop use and a full MIDI implementation for DAW integration. The 24-bit 96 kHz codec, audiophile op amps and stereo input/output make it equally at home in the studio or control room. Radius is a musical ring modulator and frequency shifter that lets you modfy the timbre of your instrument in new ways. With a multi-waveform LFO, step modulator, and MIDI-playable carrier oscillator, Radius modernizes classic electronic techniques for the future. Features: • Stereo ring modulator and frequency shifter • Continuous mix between ring modulation and frequency shifting • Selectable 2X frequency ratios for upper and lower sidebands • Frequency shifting with feedback • Three carrier frequency ranges (low, high, quantized) • Carrier frequency pitch tracking (monophonic, +/- 100%) • Pust-to-tone carrier oscillator • MIDI-playable carrier oscillator • Multi-waveform LFO (triangle, square, random, intelligent random, X mod +/-) • Step modulator (1-8 steps), programmable via front panel • Tap tempo and MIDI clock sync • Envelope follower • Envelope-triggered LFO (one-shot ramp, pulse, random, step mod) • Configurable AUX switch (tap, tune, preset, LFO) • USB and TRS MIDI • Full MIDI implementation • 96 kHz sampling rate • Web editor with preset upload/download • User-installable firmware updates (USB) Designed and assembled in USA. Requires a 9V DC 250 mA power supply (not included).

Inspiring Nature These three piano pieces, composed for the ,,Concours, Brin d'Herbe 2019, may be performed separately or as a collection, in which case they should be played in the given order. Though each piece is aimed at a different technical level (I. Elementary, II. Advanced, III. Intermediate), they have a common artistic aim: to connect musical expression with poetic inspiration. In particular, these pieces meditate on the emotional connection between our interior life and the vast and varied landscapes of the natural world all around us. While composing I found myself re-reading Kathleen Raine (one of my favourite poets) and was struck by her statement (in the foreword to her ,,Selected Poems): ,,'Nature-poetry' is not what we write about nature, but rather the language of images in which nature daily speaks to us of the timeless, age-old mystery in which we participate. Nature communicates today what it told the earliest of humankind, and what it will tell future generations when our modern high-rise cities are no more. Meanings, moods, the whole scale of our inner experience, finds in nature the 'correspondences' through which we may know our boundless selves. Nature is the common, universal language, understood by all. What she says about nature resonates with my understanding of music, which also sometimes affords us an opportunity to know 'our boundless selves'. And I am especially interested in the way that sounds - which, as vibrations in the air, are another aspect of nature - can reveal and heighten our sense of connectedness to ourselves and our surroundings. Each movement is inspired by a single stanza from the poem ,,Amo Ergo Sum by Kathleen Raine, and I would encourage anyone playing these pieces to devote time to internalising the words as well as the music, for they may contain the key to an accurate expression. As such, the relevant words are quoted at the start of each score. ,,Inner Landscapes is dedicated to Joe Browning, Lexy Oliver and Omar Shahryar. A year ago, Westminster Williamson Voices joined a consortium called “The Scattered Light Consortium†along with Jo-Michael Scheibe at USC (the USC Thornton Chamber Singers) and Jamie Glasgow (The Glasgow School of Art Choir). I was attracted to the concept not only because of the composers who are dear friends, but because the pieces were set to poems by one of America’s greatest poets, Dana Gioia. When the two works arrived from composer Sarah Rimkus and Thomas LaVoy, I had, as they say, “the wind knocked out of me.†While both poems could be interpreted using a broader life perspective, they spoke to me and the choir in ways that were immediately deep and profound. Both poems provide light and hope to all of us who are living through this change at Westminster into something unknown. And then, shortly after this recording was completed, the pandemic struck and we were in isolation from our music-making family. We were thankful that we were able to complete this recording.  All of the music on the CD reflects our hope for the future as we climb a crooked ladder leading to, hopefully, a brighter new time for our beloved college, and our lives beyond the pandemic. Our desire is to see a glimmer of light behind what seems a very closed door. This CD offers music for personal reflection, with the hope that these sounds can provide for each of us “scattered†new light.  CONTENTS: In the Bleak Midwinter, Steve Pilkington • Kit Smart's Carol, Gerald Custer • Improvisation on Coventry Carol, Sam Scheibe, Christian Koller, Guillermo Passarin, Alex Tomlinson • Solitude, James Whitbourn • The Stars Now Rearrange Themselves, Thomas LaVoy • The Burning Ladder, Sarah Rimkus • Salvation to All That Will Is Nigh, Anthony Maglione • Brightest and Best, Sarah Rimkus • Coventry Carol, John Frederick Hudson • Magnificat, Peter Relph • Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent, Sam Scheibe.

Psalm 130 is one of the most dramatic and certainly one of the Old Testament texts has most often been set to music by composers. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord ... who shall stand? Matsushita set this lament pianissimo, chordally and in a low-register, using chromatically altered chords with sparse, detached sounds. In contrast, as the aim and climax of the work he sets, most effectively the hopeful second part half of the text, with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. With the (optional) use of two hand bells he introduces the convincing, optimistic section in F major, which, however, through a reminiscence of the opening de profundis leads into a short coda: but actually Redemption is only optimism, something for the future and not reality. The level of difficulty should pose no problems for a sufficiently-sized choir with sure intonation. It is most impressive when sung either for worship services or in concert. World premiere: March 2016 in Stuttgart, Germany.

As part of John M. Feierabend's continuing effort to preserve our rich heritage of children's folk songs, GIA Publications, Inc. is pleased to expand its series of picture books based on these timeless songs and stories. Had a Little Rooster is the latest lavishly illustrated children's songtale based on the great American folk music heritage, and collected by John M. Feierabend. This delightful traditional folk song tells the story of a Rooster and all his friends on the farm who love to sing. Had a Little Rooster is a cumulative song that has been shared and sung for more than 100 years, with each verse introducing a new character and a new sound that must be added to the previous verse, making each verse longer and longer. Cumulative songs are fun to sing, as they require singers to use more and more breath, and challenge them to remember an ever-increasing cast of characters and sounds. The songs are truly brought to life by the vibrant illustrations of Jamie-Lynn Morrow. FREE MP3 Download - Full Performance MP3 download instructions: Windows users right click on the link.
