THE DREAMERS for horn, violin and piano is the sixth of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet, THE OLD CHEVALIER is for bass trombone and piano, THE MONKEY is a chamber orchestra work - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrative complexity: Themes and motivs from one piece appear in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixen's THE DREAMERS has the most complex narrative structure of all her seven gothic tales. The story is made up of three tales with different narrators, but with the same principal caracter in various disguises, all three imbedded within a fourth tale that serves as a framework for the entire short story. The main story line unravels the life of a famous opera diva who looses her voice during a terrible fire. Before this her life was perpetual bliss, and the tragedy drives her into assuming different personality guises in order to escape reality. Toward the end she is confronted with her true identity, and dies. THE DREAMERS isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism, dramatic construction, atmosphere, period and settings - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression... except one might say that the three players try their best to either catch or escape each other, and that when they finally meet, it happens abruptly, even tragically - and only barely provides a little consolation. Duration: approximately 15 minutes.

Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition.St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna's most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna's skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of themI. GroundbreakingThe first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen's Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen's was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues—from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire—before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord.II. StefflSteffl, the nickname for Stephansdom's soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom's north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna's skyline.II I. 1945As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom's roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom's great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945.IV. Anton PilgrimAnton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen's organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese's love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Score available: KP00247 Ruders writes: Quartet No. 3 Motet was written in 1979, commissioned by the Lerchenborg music-week of 1979 during which it was first performed by Quatuor Bernede. This short one-movement quartet is a kind of modernization of the 14th century French motets, a cadeau to this weird and fantastic music whose abstract and almost deprecatory, introvert expression appears unaccountably modern and incredibly ancient at the same time. Motet is a sober, cool treatise on rhythm and statics, depicted in a Gothic, crypt-like atmosphere. The almost completely non-vibrato movement is suggestive of boys' choir, monks' processions, and the piercing sound of musical glasses. An ancient world is reborn and becomes the world of today.

Commissioned by King’s Chapel, Boston, Massachusetts, in celebration of its 325th anniversary, this longer a cappella work uses a text assembled and adapted from various Biblical passages. From the composer's introduction: The anthem begins grandly with words from Psalm 89 celebrating God’s all-encompassing faithfulness and love. An alleluia refrain follows and returns several times throughout the work. However, it is not a majestic, Handelian alleluia, but rather one of inward passion and fervent introspection. The next section begins joyously with the familiar prophesy from Zechariah; it is followed by several brief Gospel scenes from the life of Jesus. After another alleluia, words of blessing from Psalm 103 are set vigorously before the work closes with a final alleluia. Gothic horror in music: This chamber choir miniature in 3/4 time, as entertaining as it is creepy, pays homage to Alban Berg's Wozzeck, which is directly quoted with the line 'Ein schoner Mord, ein guter Mord' [A beautiful murder, a good murder]. The composeradds a myriad of imaginative English text snippets on the theme of 'head off, knife out, heart beats, lights out' etc. There is vocal trembling, firing, stammering, always restless and on a knife edge - even the scratching sound of real blades is used. A virtuoso treat with which vocal ensembles in the proper mood can bring any after-programme to a crowning finale!

This piece takes its title from the eponymous poem by Edgar Allan Poe. Whittall had originally intended to keep his distance expressively from Poe's Gothic world, Poe's central image - a decaying city in the dimming West ruled by death, slowly sinking into watery oblivion - was a powerful one. Perhaps inevitably, the piece took on shades of the slow-motion humanitarian disaster unfolding on Europe's southern shores, bringing out undertones of desperation, pursuit, obsessive, elegiac reflection, and ultimately despair as it slides into the depths. The City in the Sea was commissioned by the Finnish Viola Society for the 2017 Tampere National Viola Competition.

This modal piece has a dark, other worldly sound that students love to play. It's as if it is from the past but also very much of the present-the type of music found in movies and video games. As a former band director, Joseph Compello has a knack for writing pieces that students clamor to rehearse. It is great for teaching about modes and will make your students sound their best.

I wrote this Christmas cantata from Koroshegy at the request of the Council of the Komitat Somogy. When I visited the still unrenovated little church at Koroshegy about ten years ago I had no idea that this beautiful Gothic building would one day be the scene of the world premiere of one of my works. - The cantata is founded on four pillars: four organ soli which could be described as ritornelli, followed by four a cappella choruses with the same melody but different harmonizations. These are settings of the four verses of In Epiphaniam by Janus Pannonius, the most renowned Hungarian poet and humanist of the Renaissance. Between these pillars I have introduced movements for choir or for soloists based on Hungarian folk tunes and Christmas songs from Transylvania and the Komitat Somogy: songs of the shepherds, angels and wise men, and, after a pastorale for organ, a large scale mixed-voice chorus intoning Ez karacsony ejszakajan [Holy Night]. A narrator introduces the individual numbers with passages from the Christmas story. An organ postlude concludes the work. (Ferenc Farkas) This work may be performed in German, English, French or Hungarian language. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1037800.

1982 saw the publication of a melody for written for bagpipes by the name of Highland Cathedral—a name that draws its inspiration from a famous neo-Gothic church in Glasgow, Scotland. Since its first appearance, Highland Cathedral has enjoyed a triumphant tour around the globe, often acknowledged as an enthusiastic tribute to the nation of Scotland. Anthony Gröger’s version for string quartet combines this passionate character with unmistakeable echoes of the Scottish feel of the original work. Here then is this true classic, especially popular at wedding ceremonies, now arranged for string quartet.
