The Universe works in strange ways. Recorded almost three years ago, none of us could have known that when this recording was released the world would have lived through a life-altering pandemic or a tumultuous upheaval in the cultural awareness that now surrounds us. The work that opens this recording—with the words of Quaker George Fox that end with, “So be faithful, and live in that which doth not think the time longâ€â€”provid es a haunting premonition regarding the time in which we live, Quaker George Fox is strangely prophetic about these days and perhaps provides a future caution for us all. The music chosen for this recording is strangely and poignantly relevant, I believe, for each of us. “The Fruit of Silence†by PÄ“teris Vasks reminds us to visit those beliefs that are most sacred in the work by Cortlandt Matthews. A deeply personal Requiem by Peter Relph, in reflection, remembers the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in the pandemic. And then there is Thomas LaVoy’s “O Great Beyond.†All great texts are timeless and speak to the universality of the human condition. Particularly, the George Fox text set by Jackson Hill and the Tagore text set by LaVoy give us messages to reinforce the humanness of each of us for hope. Two other works on this recording poignantly remind us of the passing of life, with the Relph Requiem and especially the final movement of “O Great Beyond.†May these words give comfort to all those who endured the deepest of Life’s losses during our shared pandemic journey. For so many loved ones, goodbyes were said in silence, and alone. It is our hope that all the music on this CD will show us a way for living as we move forward and also give loving comfort to those who have lost loved ones. Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet. Let it not be a death but completeness. Let love melt into memory and pain into songs. Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest. Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night. Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence. I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way. —Rabindranath Tagore in The Gardener (1913).

Youve played Over the Waterfall, marched along to Soldiers Joy and perhaps even found your fortune while trotting along on that Old Spotted Pony. Now its time to take the next step; beyond the waterfall to the land of lesser-played tunes.Inside this volume are 40 challenging, unusual, interesting and dare I say- extraordinary tunes. As it includes standard notation, clawhammer banjo tablature, suggested chords and fiddle bow markings, this book is truly suitable for anyone. A number of old-time songs also include lyrics, so you can sing these great songs in the old-time style. Most of the tunes include notes about their history and recording references are provided if you wish to hear how they were played and sung way back when. I encourage you to take the time to do that. It may jump start your stalled old-time music collection or as some folks say, start you a new one.

Il grande larice rosso; Piccole vite; Requiem per un boscoNever before have I felt the urgency within myself to communicate with my instrument something which goes beyond just the notes, a desire to embrace with music parts of the world which I see as being so neglected and abandoned, as if man were no longer able to see beyond the narrow confines of his home and work spaces. The environment which surrounds us, free and pure, seems to bow more and more to the base instincts of abuse which man brings into play... the destruction of centuries-old forests and glaciers, the construction of harmful and disturbing, useless and polluting elements... and I wonder what we can do, what I, as a musician, can do, at least to show my disapproval of these situations. I have no straight answer but I know that writing the music I love to play, often born in natural and wild environments can help to dream of, or imagine a present time which is more on a human scale, thanks to the strong evocative power which music possesses and emanates. This is the meaning of these compositions, dedicated to a tree, a 700-year-old specimen of the Stura Valley, Lu Merze Gros (The Big Larch), to the small beings which inhabit it, in the bark, among its foliage, in the surrounding soil and to my sense of frustration at seeing a forest of fir trees razed to the ground to allow the construction of a bobsleigh run. This action of mine has been useless and nostalgic perhaps, but it has given me intense moments of emotion in the writing and moves me enormously during its performance.Giorg io Signorile.

This fresh and exciting work explores the unique colors and characteristics of the northern plains from a musical perspective. The driving percussive rhythmic elements and regal fanfare-like themes of the introduction give way to beautiful, lyrical melodic lines, a popular characteristic of Huckeby’s ultra-descriptive music. Beyond The Western Sky will make a great choice for your next concert or contest performance!

With first and second year players in mind, Ed Huckeby has developed a modal melodic and harmonic structure using a familiar key as the tonal center, making the piece sound much more difficult than it really is. The contrasting slow section allows the ensemble to showcase its developing legato style. A single bass line also allows great flexibility for ensembles with limited low brass and low woodwind sections. Your students will love Beyond The Stars and your audiences will be amazed at how the band is playing such difficult music. Highly recommended for young players and ensembles with limited instrumentation.
