Gustav Holst wrote the libretto and music for his opera The Perfect Fool over the years 1918 to 1922. It had its premiere at in London the next year but mystified audiences and has been rarely performed since then. This five-movement suite of introductory ballet music is arranged separately as an Orchestral suite.The ballet music includes dances for the Spirits of Earth Water and Fire and Holst’s music evokes the moods of these beings delightfully.Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.

One of Holst's most under-appreciated works Ode To Death (Op. 38) was written in 1919 in response to the First World War and mourned his friends who had died in that conflict. Scored for SATB Chorus and Orchestra it is a setting of the elegiac poem When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd by Walt Whitman. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams they would often critique each other’s work and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for his Planets suite.

Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work in his use of Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. In Savitri he makes use of modal styles bitonality austerity ofOrchestration in some places richness of texture in others and an ability to suggest Indian exoticism. The piece has a performance time of thirty minutes and has minimal staging requirements.

Par HOLST GUSTAV. Invocation was composed in 1911 and first performed on May 2nd of that year in the Queen's Hall, London, by May Mukle with the New Symphony Orchestra conducted by Landon Ronald. The work received several performances with Piano accompaniment before 1914, but with the public success of The Planets, it became one of many works that Holst never had time to revise or publish. A certain amount of editing of dynamics and phrasing has been necessary, and the Piano reduction has occasionally been slightly adjusted to match the orchestral accompaniment more closely.
