The last decades we humans have witnessed a significant number of disturbing developments. If we look at the direct and persistent destructive influence of humans on nature: air and water quality are reducing, soils are depleting, crops are short of pollinators, coasts are less protected from storms, deforestation, the degradation of land, loss of biodiversity and pollution. In stark contrast we find the intelligence and boundless creativity of humans: what about all the high technological advancements? What lies ahead in the realm of Artificial Intelligence? Will we let machines make human decisions? What ethical issues arise there? This composition reflects the desperation and urgency of the human need for action. The music draws inspiration from the brutal natural forces that ravage our world as a direct consequence of human failure and selfishness. Are we heading towards a 'Judgment Day'? Or will humanity find a way to reverse negative trends towards a more livable, peaceful, and joyful environment for humans, animals, and nature? To underscore this message, composer Peter Knockaert opted for a highly classical idiom that has been used by many composers in classical music: the 'Dies Irae'. Traditionally, the Dies Irae is the third part of a requiem (funeral mass). The text used in 'Judgment DayÂ? (for optional choir) is coming from the original Latin text.

Composing this piece was an interesting process. A piece of a melody or an idea takes shape, and after writing it down, itas like planting a seed that starts to grow and develop. I got a snippet of a western idea and then thought of a monument in my hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia. The statue is called Madonna of the Trail. The history part of this piece started to take shape as I researched this statue. There are twelve of them located in twelve states where the Old Trail Road, or National Road, passes through. As the piece developed, I started to think about the travel of a pioneer woman and her family passing through various areas of our early country. The 3,000 mile coast-to-coast National road was realized in the early 1900s but was based on six trails that date back to the 1700s. After developing the introduction and theme to this concert band piece, the story began to take shape. The slower 3/4 section melody hints at Greensleeves (What Child Is This) which appropriately weaves itself into the mix. Finally heading further west into New Mexico, Arizona, and California, the melody takes on a Spanish flavor and returns to the main theme before its conclusion. Divisi parts that are optional can be utilized to add a richer sound. Feel free to experiment with octave changes in the woodwinds in the fuller sections, if students are comfortable playing up an octave. Always be aware of the musicality, blend, and especially legato playing when required.Composing this piece was an interesting process. The Urtext edition (2023) of Jean Sibelius’ Five Christmas Songs op. 1 for voice and piano is based on the critical edition presented in the volume VIII/2 Works for Solo Voice Vol. 2 of Jean Sibelius Works (JSW) edited by Jukka Tiilikainen. The lyrics are included in Swedish, Finnish and English.Sakari Ylivuori's introduction illuminates the history of the beloved songs: May 1, 1913 was cold and wet. Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) spent the day at home at Ainola composing two Christmas songs: settings of poems for children by Zachris Topelius. The two songs born on that chilly spring day were Nu står jul vid snöig port (Now stands Yule at the snowy gate) and Nu så kommer julen (Now is Christmas coming). He then put them together with three Christmas carols he had earlier composed and gave the set the imposing Opus number 1. He had previously considered giving the distinction to various other works, but from 1915 onwards the Five Christmas Songs had the honour of heading his catalogue. Tiresias, the Blind Prophet of Thebes, is on a walk, and along comes Orlando, the title character from Virginia Woolf's novel. Orlando, who is of noble birth, has only recently been changed - inexplicably - during seven mysterious days of unbroken sleep - from a man to a woman, and is crossing this plane heading from Constantinople back to England, his homeland. Tiresias assumes that Orlando will ask him for advice, and so speaks first.

Ascolta! (= Listen!) is the name of the ensemble with which the editor played all the pieces in this book: in the classroom, in home music-making, outdoors and at international festivals. Listening is an indispensable precondition of group playing, particularly because the stylistically appropriate performance of folk music requires improvisational abilities. The performance material consists of sheet music that can be used without having to turn pages. This sheet music has also been prepared for instruments in C, B flat and for guitar on the enclosed CD-ROM. The subheading variable ensemble is to be taken literally, for there are practically no limits to the imagination when it comes to the scoring and the execution of the pieces: the classical melody instruments can be supplemented by the accordion, the guitar and percussion. The 14 pieces come from Europe, South America, and from Yiddish folk music. The edition is rounded off by tips and comments on ensemble playing, on the individual pieces, and on the performance of percussion instruments; further, there are free translations of the song texts.

On the workFor many years I was the director of festive music at our local church in Orpington. I always carried a little music notebook on me for use during the sermons. I remember writing a series of notes, as a challenge to use as a melody when I got home, then I realised it used all twelve notes of the scale. Having been penned during a sermon, I decided to use this as a structure. The tone row became the sermon and the following variations the reactions to this sermon. As a clue to the ideas behind the music, I added sectional headings to each variation. While this is a serious work musically, it is actually meant to be a piece of fun!
