Cornet solos are an important part of the American Brass tradition. The Southern Cross is one of Clarke's most well known Cornet solos and was written in 1911, dedicated to the Australians and first recorded by the composer with Orchestra the next year for Victor Records.During 1911, Clarke was the solo Cornetist of the Sousa Band while the band was on a world tour that included visits to South Africa, Tazmania and Australia from March through to August.Below is a photo of the Sousa band from their 1911 tour. Clarke is sitting in the front row 5th in from the right with his moustache and his Cornet on his lap. He assuredly composed this solo to perform on that tour. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is only seen from the southern hemisphere and features the five stars of the Cross from the 1901 design of the Australian flag. This 5-minute virtuosic arrangement by Geoffrey Bergler features not only the Cornet, but a bit of all the other four members of the Brass Quintet.Instrumentat ion is for:2 Trumpets in B-flat (Trumpet 1 solo, Trumpet 2 also plays Piccolo)Horn,Tr omboneTuba/Bass TromboneThe sound track below features Mr. Bergler from his student days as Cornet soloist

Solstice Sonata (2013) for trumpet and organ was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for its 2014 Biennial National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. It was premiered on June 24, 2014 at the Memorial Church, Harvard University, by trumpeter Chris Gekker and organist Christian Lane. At the solstice (summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern), the sun is directly aligned with the tropical latitude lines, and the longest day of the year occurs (marking the start of summer). This sonata is music of celebration and contemplation, taking the inspiration of the longest day as a starting place for both meditation both thoughtful and joyous. Take Flight soars and leaps with vigor-perhaps the image of a hang-glider's journey over a dramatic landscape under the late evening sun. The Dream of Peace is lyrical and passionate; it is perhaps night music of reflection and intensity. Glittering, Aglow begins with quiet, mystical music: a gradual awakening. A vibrant, syncopated dance breaks out, is interrupted by the quiet music again, and returns to push forward to a vibrant conclusion. The new season has begun.Instrumentation: Trumpet and Organ. Composed: 2013 Published by: Zimbel Press.

This new work by Philip Sparke was commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Australian Army Bands Corps. “The Roaring Forties” is what seamen call the region between the 40th and 50th degrees of latitude in the southern hemisphere (due to the boisterous and prevailing westerly winds). A fanfare, chorale and an energetic vivo all capture this untameable region. Duration: 5:45.

America has often been referred to as the great melting pot of nationalities and cultures. That is true to a certain extent. Americans have not relinquished the unique character of their individual heritage - they have, however, acknowledged those things that unite all of us as a people, a nation dedicated to liberty and justice for all. The one thing we share that is most obvious is this particular area of the planet Earth, located in the western hemisphere, on the North American Continent. This is a landmass that is bordered east and west by the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and north and south by Canada and Mexico. In addition, we have two states that are thousands of miles removed from these borders but very much a part of these states - the United States of America. This is a celebration of our country - our dwelling place - our Homeland. Our Homeland - this is the place where we pledge the same flag, protect and defend the same Constitution, breathe the same air, cherish the future of our children, and stand constant vigil to defend the rights that compelled our founders to form a more perfect Union. This is the place our ancestors fought for, and also the place where people still gather the courage to come and be a part of the greatest experiment in freedom in human history.America - a land uniquely blessed of God - a staggering mosaic of natural beauty and resources. America - sweet land of Liberty. America - residence for those who dared to dream the dream, pay the price, share the costs. . . of living in the HOMELAND!

When the composer was flying to her homeland of Taiwan from her home in Vienna, a poetic image emerged quite spontaneously: she felt like a migratory bird, flying year after year 10,000 kilometres away from Vienna over the Alps and across Eastern Europe, Arabia, Russia, the Mongolian steppes, the Tibetan plateau, South-East Asia and the Pacific in order to spend the cold winter in the Southern Hemisphere; in spring she once again fly 10,000 kilometres to the north. During this flight her imagination plays with the different landscapes: what could a migratory bird espy from its bird’s perspective? In this composition Ming Wang brings together or unite many different sounds and musical elements that symbolize the various geographical regions. These disparate elements are held together by a few central notes, fixed harmonic structures, a migratory bird theme, a Europe theme and a 13-note row. The Chinese arched zither or Zheng represents an exotic bird that by chance has landed in this Western ensemble.
