Er Huang was commissioned by Carnegie Hall, New York where, in 2009, it received its world premiere with solo pianist Lang Lang and the Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. Chen wrote about the work, 'Music has its own life ?? for me the germination of any musical work is like a tree growing out of the ground, and the eventual outcome of this life is entirely unknowable in advance.' Commenting on the connection between Er Huang and its source of inspiration, the Er Huang tunes from the classical Peking Opera repertoire, he says that, 'the way I applied musical elements from Peking Opera to my own writing was not really based on musicological studies. Rather, these tunes were an essential part of my childhood in Beijing, and always intertwined with memories of my family and the society I lived in at the time. Many people from my generation would be able to hum these tunes by heart. These days, however, these familiar tunes have been almost entirely forgotten, as the younger generation is much more occupied by western pop culture. This is why, when I quote these tunes, Ioften do so with a great sense of nostalgia. Traditional Chinese music has a very strong character, and the organic assimilation of something that I feel most akin to, over time, into my own musical language, has become an essential part of my artistic expression.'.

DUNHU ANG FANTASIA is a fascinating 12-minute drama inspired by art from grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. These frescoes preserve images of music and dance scenes, including the postures and attitudes of performers, and of the musical instruments used. Zhou Long’s music begins with a mysterious introduction driven by drum-like textures, followed by a series of episodes, enhanced by captions of the artwork inspiring each section and evocations of the ancient musical instruments.Commissio ned and with fingering by Zou Xiang, Dunhuang Fantasia was composed in the fall of 2017. The music was inspired by the art of the Mogaoku grottoes in the ancient town of Dunhuang in western China. The frescoes of the Dunhuang grottos preserve a number of music and dance performance scenes, including images of the postures and attitudes of performers, and of a number of musical instrument types are used. The most popular form of music indigenous to this region is the huar, a folk-song type current among a number of nationalities. The huar is actually a kind of mountain song. Along with huar, Dunhuang pipa qupu (Dunhuang pipa notation) is also an inspiration for elements in this music. The music begins in adagio as a mysterious introduction. The drum-like rhythm patterns beating in the lowest region of the piano, with a muted-string sonority, creates an expanded space to enhance the echoes from the grottos. This is soon followed by the first main section, Cup of Happiness, featuring the huar and Dunhuang pipa melodies along with the dance rhythm. In the next section, Water Drum, the music becomes medium tempo. In the section Dialogue in Presto, the music becomes more active and contrapuntal. The section Tune: Changsha Girl is in a faster tempo as a dance scene. The Coda starts with dense rhythms, and tension is gradually intensified to reach a climax, culminating in a return of the opening section.

My composition Chang Tzu's Dream is a homage to the Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu (4th century B.C.), who is one of the first important figures in Taoism. His work also influenced Chinese poetry and landscape painting. One of the earliest Chinese stories related to dreams tells of Chuang Tzu: in a dream he saw himself as a butterfly, then on awakening he could not decide if it was really he, Chuang Tzu, who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or whether now the butterfly was dreaming of being Chuang Tzu. Ever since I have been involved in music, I have always been fascinated by the variety of the world that can be created with sound. Is its true existence different from the material world? Can one be transformed into the other? These were precisely the questions I discovered in Chuang Tzu's Dream. -Mate Bella The work won first prize at the 2009 New Hungarian Music Forum composer's competition in chamber music category. It was premiered by Judit Szabo and the UMZE Ensemble conducted by Zoltan Racz on 12 January 2009 in Budapest.

After traveling to Beijing, China in the summer of 2008, the composer was inspired to create a concert work that depicts the ancient battles of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China in 221 BC, and his warriors. This Emperor's reign included unification, the building of the Great Wall and his endless search for immortality. Qin Shi Huang had over 8000 Terracotta Warriors buried in front of his tomb in order to have a strong underground army to defend him in the afterlife.
