Hymn to St. Cecilia is an English setting of the Latin prayer Cecilia virgo, whose melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic features are punctuated by singing that is sometimes accompanied by the organ and sometimes exposed in accappella sections. The crux of the piece occurs in the moment that describes how many look to St. Cecilia (i.e. music) “to transform the world’s mourning into the glory of Paradise.”

Following upon “Alexander’s Feast†(1736), in 1739 Handel produced a second setting of the “Ode to St Cecilia†(“Song for St Cecilia’s Dayâ€). At its première it was combined with “Alexander’s Feastâ€. Rather than a dramatic plot presentable in the theatre, the Ode, in its seven sections, offers a general hymn of praise to music and its impact. Accordingly, it largely consists of emotion-laden arias and festive orchestration.Thi s edition, based on the Urtext from the “Halle Handel Editionâ€, offers the version heard at the first performance – the version preferred in today’s concert life. The foreword (Ger/Eng) provides many detailed notes on performance practice with regard to orchestration.

This selection enables unjustly neglected church choral music of the Cecilian Movement to be restored to use. The texts, all in Latin, reflect the Cecilian epoch from its beginnings in the early 19th century to the 20th century, and the generally easily performable nature of the music recommends it for use during church services. This choir book, representing the most important composers of the Cecilian Movement, provides a very valuable survey of the Cecilian repertoire.
