In the vocal oeuvre of Johann Sebastian Bach the arias scored for obbligato flute for two flutes or for oboe constitute a dazzlingly varied repertoire. Treated on an equal footing with the vocal part the obbligato parts assume solo duties in many pieces. The most demanding solo passages composed for these instruments in the 18th century are occasionally hidden in Bachs arias. The MUSICA RARA edition of Bachs collected arias presents an authentic musical text which follows the principal sources in phrasing and articulation.

Preludes Toccatas Fantasias and Fugues II/Early Versions and Variants to I (Vol. 5) & II (Vol. 6)-Johann Sebastian Bach's Complete Organ Works in revised editions.Any complete scholarly critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must incorporate new research findings in the interest of scholars and performers alike. Now all of Bärenreiter?s new performing editions of Bach?s Organ works are being revised to reflect the current state of scholarship and to convey maximum fidelity to the sources by being linked to ?Bach digital?.The present volume is an updated edition of Series IV Volume 6 of the ?New Bach Edition? (NBA) prepared by Dietrich Kilian in 1964. The discovery of new sources and a reassessmentof existing handwritten copies have brought about changes to the contents of the volume which now includes the ?Fantasia in C minor? (BWV 1121) the ?Fantasia in G major? (BWV 571) the ?Fugue in G major? (BWV 577) and the C major version of the ?Toccata and Fugue in E major? (BWV 566). On the other hand the ?Prelude in G major? (BWV 568) as well as the alternative versions of the ?Fugue in C minor? (BWV 574a) and the ?Prelude in A major? (BWV 536a) have been discarded as presumably spurious.Besides the new compilation and corrections of the musical text the volume also contains a detailed Foreword by Peter Wollny with observations on each work and the extant sources. Page turns have been re-examined and improved. In collaboration with the Bach Archive Leipzig and its ?Bach? digital database links are provided to all the major sources. Fantasien und Fugen/Einzelwerke - mit CD-ROM-Although the “fantasia” was already considered as old-fashioned around 1700 this genre exerted a particular fascination on the very young Bach – he had since relocated to Köthen – and the experienced composer as well.Volume 3 the latest installment in the Complete Organ Works gathers together all transmitted organ fantasias by Bach the fragments of the fugues belonging to them and all individual fugues as well. They include for instance the Fantasia in C BWV 570 undoubtedly the master’s oldest free organ work. The most notable works in this edition are the celebrated Fantasia in g minor BWV 542/1 and the Fuga in g BWV 542/2. DidBach actually intend a combination of the two pieces as a joint composition? This and other intriguing questions concerning versions sources and genre history are examined by editor Pieter Dirksen in the introduction and comments which contain a synopsis and a wealth of transposed and ornamented versions of the works which supplement the edition on the enclosed CD-ROM.

A complete reconstruction based on the 1731 and 1744 versions of the text-In its various reconstructed and completed version Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Mark Passion BWV 247 occupies a fixed place in the pre-Easter concert repertoire. As the third of what were originally five Passions not only was it the latest to be written it is also the most enigmatic of the known Good Friday works composed by the Kantor of the Thomasschule. The fundamental approach behind the present version of the St. Mark Passion is to attempt to get as close as possible stylistically to the performed versions of 1731 and 1744. It is hoped that in the service of church music practice this completereconstruction will thus help to transform the third of Bach’s Passion works into a stylistically unified whole.

The chorales were originally text and melody sung a cappella and were for congregational singing. Chorales were set in four parts forchoir use and are still appropriate for performance in worship services today. Many of the melodies will be familiar to those who sing traditional hymns. Choirs will love singing these beautifully written settings.

In 1739 Bach's Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach's artistry. This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4, Series IV, of the New Bach Edition, presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary, as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However, the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work's genesis but also offers an up-to-date description of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach's autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must, in the interest of its use by researchers and performers, incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind, Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable, either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. In this way, each new performing edition will represent the cutting edge of research.Further hallmarks of this new generation of Urtext editions will be detailed, up-to-date Prefaces and newly engraved musical texts with optimum page turns. Messen Magnificat Motetten-The Bach commentary discusses in four extensive volumes Johann Sebastian Bach’s complete sacred vocal works from a theological point of view. In the scope of previous research musicologists attempted to understand Johann Sebastian Bach’s sacred vocal works based on a general knowledge of the Lutheran church and theology. A theological equivalent to the fundamental Bach research presented by musicologists – one that would mainly draw from the contemporary theology relevant for the texts Bach set to music – has not been presented until now. Closing this gap the Bach commentary is based on extensive theological research and offers readers comprehensible insights into the Bible interpretation used by Johann Sebastian Bach in his sacred vocal works. Volume IV contains Bach’s masses Magnificat and motets. The author Martin Petzoldt was Professor for Systematic Theology at the theological faculty of the Leipzig University.

Of particular interest in this book is the Canzona in d BWV 588. Written before 1707, this early work is found in a contemporary copy by Johann Gottlieb Preller with embellishments, fingerings and a closing cadenza - this version is printed in the Appendix. Similarly, the print of the early version of the Passacaglia BWV 582 is likely to meet with great interest.
