Organ Chorales From The Neumeister Collection Yale University Manuscript 'Lm 4708'. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. In 1985 Christoph Wolff, working at Yale University, discovered a collection of 82 chorales compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister (1756-1840) which contained 38 compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. They reveal great stylistic variety whose forebears stem from the Northern German organ tradition. Already these early works comprising fantasias, fugues, fughettas and imitative techniques employing motifs from chorale melodies bear witness to Bach' s broad compositional spectrum. This newly published volume is an updated edition of Series IV/9 of the ' New Bach Edition” (NBA), edited by Christoph Wolff and based on this source. In addition to a newly added concordance and corrections to the musical text, it also contains a detailed Foreword by Christoph Wolff with further information on the Neumeister Collection and hymnological details. Besides being an influential and prolific composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was one of the great teachers of his day. He was a dedicated master of the keyboard always exploring and expanding his knowledge of the instrument. Technique was of paramount significance to Bach and he was always developing exercises to improve his students??? playing. Bach developed those exercises into the pieces presented in 18 Short Preludes. However these compositions are more than keyboard exercises. They are light airy fun works that reflect Bach???s love of the short simple prelude form. They provide the beginning student with an excellent introduction to the genius ofJ.S. This carefully transcribed collection of violin duets and its two companion volumes Duets for Two Violas (MB # 21438) and Duets for Two Cellos (MB #21439) bring many additions taken from Bach’s suites preludes and inventions to the string player’s repertoire. Intermediate and advanced instrumentalists willdelight in the musical complexity contrapuntal dialogue and variety of moods in these pieces. Since bowing and fingering preferences vary greatly among string players editorial marks have been kept to a minimum. Thesearrangements are an attractive valuable addition to string ensemble work.
