This march, opus 470 in Johann Strauss the Younger’s oeuvre, was dedicated to the k.u.k. (Royal) Infanterie-Regiment ‘Hoch und Deutschmeister No. 4’ on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. In 1896 this joyful event was celebrated with a grand concert featuring no less than seven military bands, with more than 350 musicians performing.

Deze mars, opus 470 in het oeuvre van Johann Strauss jr. is opgedragen aan het k.u.k. Niederösterreichisches Infanterie-Regiment Hoch- und Deutschmeister Nr. 4, ter gelegenheid van het tweehonderdjarig bestaan van het gezelschap. In 1896 werd dit jubileum gevierd met een groot concert waaraan maar liefst zeven militaire orkesten en in totaal ruim 350 muzikanten meededen.

Dieser Marsch, op. 470, von Johann Strauß (Sohn) wurde dem kaiserlich-königlichen Infanterie-Regiment Hoch- und Deutschmeister Nr. 4“ aus Anlass seines 200-jährigen Bestehens gewidmet. Dieses freudige Ereignis wurde 1896 mit einem großen Konzert gefeiert, an dem nicht weniger als sieben Militärmusikkapellen mit mehr als 350 Musikern teilnahmen.

Cette marche opus 470 de l’œuvre de Johann Strauss fils fut dédiée au régiment d’infanterie royal et impérial Hoch und Deutschmeister Nr.4 l’occasion de son 200^ème anniversaire. En 1896 cet évènement jovial fut célébré avec un concert grandiose où figuraient au moins sept fanfares militaires avec un total de plus de 350 musiciens.

Questa marcia, l’opus 470 nel catalolgo di Johann Strauss figlio, è stata dedicata all’Imperial Regio Reggimento di Fanteria ‘Hoch und Deutschmeister No. 4’ in occasione dei suoi 200 anni. Questo momento gioioso è stato celebrato nel 1896 con un grande concerto e la partecipazione di sette bande militari, composte in tutto da oltre 350 musicisti.

‘Jubilant Prelude’ is an orchestration of the ‘Preludium over Psalm 150’ originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the ‘Grote or Sint Michaëlskerk’ in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several ‘contemporary’ compositions for organ.‘Jubilant Prelude’ has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm.After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself isheard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement.The instrumentation for fanfare band was made by Wim Rouw. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section.

Sinds 1998 is Toon Hagen als organist verbonden aan de Grote of Sint Michaëlskerk te Zwolle.Hij heeft meerdere ‘eigentijdse’ composities voor orgel op zijn naam staan.‘Jubilant Prelude’ krijgt door het gebruik van onregelmatige maatsoorten en vele maatwisselingen een grillig karakter.De opbouw van de Prelude is fugatisch,en is gebaseerd op motieven van de psalm.Na de eerste climax, dynamisch en harmonisch, is op het Andante Jubiloso het thema duidelijk hoorbaar, en wordt afgewisseld met grillige motieven. De spanning neemt toe totdat de psalmin volle glorie volgt. De melodie van de psalm klinkt als een cantus firmus in het tenor register, met een omspeling in saxofoons, bugels en trompetten.Het slot is net als het voorspel grillig en heftig.De instrumentatie voorfanfare orkest is van Wim Rouw. Deze is bijzonder kleurrijk met een verrassend gebruik van het slagwerk.

In 1868 William Francis Allen published a collection of spirituals, songs sung by slaves whilst they worked. This book started a flood of enthusiasm for the spiritual which continues to this day. Jubilation (a time for celebration) uses the spiritual 'My Lord, What A Morning' as the main melody for transitions and modulations throughout and to introduce three further spirituals: I'm Gonna Sing, Steal Away and Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit.
