The corrected and updated edition of the piano reduction of the opera The Last Temptations (Viimeiset kiusaukset, 1973-75) is made by Pekka Asikainen, who has worked with it as a repetiteur for decades, and the conductor Ulf Soderblom. The publication marks 100th anniversary of Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996), celebrated in 2021. The Last Temptations (Viimeiset kiusaukset), an opera in two acts by Joonas Kokkonen to a libretto by Lauri Kokkonen, is considered one of the most important Finnish operas. The opera deals with the life of the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century folk preacher Paavo Ruotsalainen. Kokkonen worked on the opera for 16 years before finishing the work. It was premiered in Helsinki by the Finnish National Opera in 1975. The opera consists of two acts divided in 14 scenes. The combining element of the work is the hymn number 382 in the current Finnish hymnal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, My Lord, my God in all distress Finnish: Sinuhun turvaan Jumala (382) which is a reoccurring theme throughout the opera. A chorus containing the whole hymn concludes the opera.

The hymn from the tone poem Finlandia op. 26 for orchestra, one of the best-known works of Jean Sibelius, became the unofficial national anthem of Finland with the text of Veikko Antero Koskenniemi (1906-1962). In a time of great insecurity after the attack of the Soviet Union in 1939, Koskenniemi managed to capture the rising national consciousness and the hope of the Finns for an imminent solution of the conflict. Sibelius had already written an arrangement of the hymn for male choir on a different text in 1938, but after a suggestion by his publisher Roger Lindberg, he decided to write a version for mixed choir, too, on the by now better known text by Koskenniemi. This version in F major was published in 1949, but at Breitkopf & Hartel only with a German translation by Hellmuth von Hase. The Finlandia-Hymn with the Finnish text by Koskenniemi is therefore now available at Breitkopf & Hartel for the first time, as Urtext of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works. The edition includes both the version in F major as well as a second version in A flat major, written by Sibelius himself, too, but until now unpublished outside of the complete edition.

Drawing on the composer's transcriptions for violin (with Samuel Dushkin) and for cello (with Gregor Piatigorsky), Kim Kashkashian has produced a long-overdue viola version of this neoclassical masterpiece. The choice of movements from Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite differs between those for violin and cello; Kashkashian has in turn made a slightly different selection comprising Introduzione, Serenata, Aria, Tarantella, Toccata and Minuetto e Finale. A show-stopping addition to the repertory of modern viola music.

Pian o reduction available for the first time! Joonas Kokkonen's The Hades of the Birds consists of three songs, two shorter ones framing a longer middle one. The chosen poems were by P. Mustapaa (alias Martti Haavio, 1899-1973), and their appeal lay for him in their simply unique mysticism. The music merges seamlessly with the moods of the poems, closely reacting to the textual nuances. The original Hades of the Birds was scored for orchestra. Kokkonen did not make a piano version as such because he had always conceived of it as orchestral. The importance of the orchestral element should not, however, be overemphasised, because this is a work painted in clear, delicate, water-colours, not in heavy, colourful brush-strokes. For colour was, he said, always only a secondary factor for him. Hence the piano version also seeks to bring out the essential musical substance of the work.Osat / songs:1. Taydellisyyden maassa [In the World of Perfection] (c1-g2)2. Lintujen tuonela [The Hades of the Birds] (h-g2)3. Sade [Rain] (cis1-a2).

Jouk o Linjama's skilled transcription for organ brings the much-loved Requiem by Joonas Kokkonen to new platforms; it is now possible to perform the work with soloists (2), SATB choir and organ. Kokkonen's Requiem is music of light and hope, no judgement day images are included, but rather warm consolation. The Requiem was composed while and after the composer's wife passed away. There are nine movements in total, text in Latin, and it is firmly rooted in the Requiem tradition. The work ends in an E major chord with word Lux, light, being sung.

This work in three movements dates from 1955, from Kokkonen's neo-classical period, dominated as it was by chamber music, before Kokkonen's eventual move through chromaticism to dodecaphony. The two instruments are treated very much as equal partners, and the work is motivically and formally of tight construction.

Joon as Kokkonen (1921-1996) was one of the post-war Finnish composers who sought to distance himself from the legacy of Sibelius. The cycle Sub rosa - settings of poems by Eeva-Liisa Manner (1973) - is now being published for the first time. The poems by Eeva-Liisa Manner (1921-1995) are from her collection Orfiset laulut (Orphic Songs) published in 1960 drawing on ancient mythology, oriental philosophy and mysticism in her own inimitable, unadorned manner. Poet and composer shake hands in this song cycle: the same landscape looks different depending on the lighting and season. The music represents the sparse, economical Kokkonen at his best; he uses an embryonic motif in a variety of ways and forms. Sub rosa was premiered by Helja Angervo, mezzo-soprano and Izumi Tateno, piano on March 25, 1973. The overall duration is c. 10 minutes.
