By Lantern's Light is a medley of Persian folk songs. The songs come from a collection for voice and piano by Clair Fairchild in his Twelve Persian Folk Songs published by Novello and Company, London, 1904. Fairchild's goal was to capture the spirit and ambiance of Persia's music and musicians. Fairchild took special care to preserve their authenticity by limiting western harmony. Such is also the case in this setting for concert band. Special attention should be given to replicate songlike phrasing of the melodic lines and the rhythmic integrity and style of the accompaniment. Conductors are encouraged to take liberties with dynamics and articulations to help performers play expressively. There are many inflections that exist beyond what is printed on the page. For example, the reeds might subtly shape the rhythmic accompaniment in m. 6-7, as might the trumpets with the melody in m. 18. In. m. 23, the wind musicians other than the trumpets are a part of the rhythm section with the percussion. These rhythms should fit together nicely to create a steady cadence. The melodic statements beginning at m. 35 should be carefully balanced to speak evenly throughout the various voices. If an oboist is not available, the solo in m. 57 has been cued in the alto saxophone.By Lantern??s Light is a medley of Persian folk songs. The Power of the KING is the latest Christmas musical from Simply WordKidz, the best-selling easy-learn, easy-sing series for children’s choir from Word Music & Church Resources. The story behind The Power of the KING, written and created by Gina Boe and Barb Dorn, revolves around radio station K-I-N-G. A major winter storm is threatening to shut down the entire state. The power grid is failing all around, and highways are closing due to dangerous road conditions. A bus transporting a children’s choir on their Christmas tour is stranded by the storm, so the choir takes refuge at the radio station. The timing of the winter storm couldn’t be worse, as the station’s power goes off just as they are about to broadcast the annual Christmas show. Unable to play any recorded music due to the limitations of the backup generator, the radio station staff hastily scrambles to put together a live radio broadcast telling the joyous Good News of the Christmas story, with the help of the stranded children’s choir! The Power of the KING from the Simply WordKidz Series… the perfect way to bring your church and community together this Christmas, in celebration of the miracle of Christ’s birth! Casting

Phantasmag oria is described as a shifting series of phantasms, illusions, or deceptive appearances, as in a dream or as created by the imagination. In this fascinating piece, key centers shift just like the phantasms created by the projections of a magic lantern, creating a sense of wonder with concealed, dark undertones.

For violin and piano This is a reworking of material from Berkeley's 1979 Violin Sonata, and is an evocative and atmospheric single movement. Veilleuse means 'Night Watch' or 'Night Lantern', and the music has a slightly melancholy, restless atmosphere, which momentarily erupts in a passionate outburst before settling back to the quietly ticking, veiled lines of the opening.
