The composer and conductor Oliver Knussen (1952 - 2018) was loved by many companions for his generosity and musical intellect. To Detlev Glanert, whose works he loved to perform, he was a friend and one of his 'personal heroes'. By his own admission, he learned attention to detail from 'Olly', with whom he worked at Tanglewood as early as 1986. If Glanert's Trumpet Concerto, composed in 2018, is the large-scale symphonic homage to his role model, the solo “Little Letter to Olly†does the same in a small format. Two elegiac adagio sections frame a boisterous presto with all kinds of virtuoso tricks. The 'Letter without Words' owes its existence to a suggestion by the cellist Anssi Karttunen, who asked for commemorative pieces for Knussen's 70th birthday from a number of composers and premiered them at the Aldeburgh Festival 2022.

Posse†s compositions for harp are rich and varied, and range from the easy pieces dedicated to his students to the virtuoso concert pieces; we must also remember his didactic works, in particular the ‘Six Small Studies’ and the universally known ‘Eight Great Concert Studies’.It is not easy to draw a balance of his legacy in the harp world. On one hand his technical vision of virtuosity combined with a great stability of the hand and rigor of the fingerings certainly contributed to the development of the 20th Century harp technique; on the other hand, his use of the pedals, often driven by two together with the same foot (a very old French technique), has gradually become more and more difficult on modern harps. From the point of view of his contribution to the harp repertoire, the constant run-up to the piano has heavily influenced his compositional production, making him often completely miss the idiomatic effects of 19th Century harp music (except for the use of harmonic sounds), which were so loved by his friend Liszt in the compositions of Parish Alvars.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard.The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard.The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The Small concerto for solo oboe and chamber orchestra was commissioned by The Royal Library of Copenhagen for the inauguration of a concert hall located at the new library annex, the so-called Black Diamond, September 1999. An early and anonymous arrangement for two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons of Mozart's Horn Quintet K.407, originally for horn and strings. Mozart wrote it for his friend the horn virtuoso and cheese merchant Ignaz Leutgeb. The quintet was written in an entertaining style, without great depth and this perhaps reflected the character of his friend who was a brilliant musician but possessed little culture and intelligence. However, the tender and graceful middle movement was described by Albert Einstein as a love duet between the horn and violin.
