Lord of All Hopefulness

Following an initial quite straightforward first verse the melody moves to the Tenor Voice with the Soprano and Alto harmony sometimes crossing over. In the third Voice unaccompanied Chorale is used. In the fourth and final Voice a few Soprano Voices provide a descant. This moving arrangement of Lord of All Hopefulness by Dr Barry Rose was written in the fullness of a long distinguished career that included thirty years as Organist at Guildford Cathedral. The Eucharistic texts set to familiar melodies-This is an ideal setting for parishes wishing to quickly introduce new music. Michael Forster has made metrical versions of the Kyrie Gloria Sanctus and Agnus Dei as well as the acclamations and Great Amen and marriedthem to beautiful tunes such as Lord of all hopefulness Dear Lord and Father of mankind and the Ash Grove. Any congregation can sing them immediately and they really do sound great!

I have always loved the book of Psalms. The range of human emotions conveyed in that book is so real. Joy, sorrow, fear, hope, worry, confidence, anxiety, assurance and much more spring out of those wonderful verses. Yet underneath all of that is a bedrock faith that the cries of exhilaration and anguish will be heard and answered. In this collection I selected 13 verses from Psalms. On each I set a melodic line to the verse and then composed 9 variations on that line. Many of the arrangements were written and recorded on a 7 string guitar; however, every piece may be played quite successfully on a 6 string guitar. Where a low A or B appears in the notation, I have written a substitute note in the tablature which will work on a 6 string guitar. These solos may be played in concert, recital or in worship celebrations. I hope you enjoy them as they are very meaningful to me. Includes access to online audio.

The specificity of music heard only in certain seasons is for me an important and thrilling element of the choral tradition: a Beethoven Symphony is welcome at any point in the year but an anthem for Candlemas works only then at a certain time of day and on a certain day of the year. With this functional spirit at the heart of the compositional process I hope that the music collected here makes equal sense in a concert setting.
