Piano 4 Mains

“As I began this piece, it was as though I were entering a dream. The music was atmospheric, undefined, and somewhat disorienting. Gradually the material became more focused, but just in time to switch to a very different--though related--sound world, which became the second movement. The overall poignancy, varied sound worlds and dramatic shape of the music suggested the title.” ~Dana Wilson Duration: 8:00 (Recorded by the North Texas Wind Symphony, Jacqueline Townsend, conductor).

The Lost City of Shambhala takes the listener on a journey to the discovery of the mythical utopia, nested in the Himalayas. In Sanskrit, Shambhala means place of peace, and the music paints an Eden-esque landscape shrouded in mystery. But it is soon discovered that entry into the city is well-guarded and met with hostility as the music shifts to a heavily percussive, driving thrill-ride of shifting 7/8 and 4/4 time signatures. An exciting and energetic work that makes a fantastic addition to any program!

This Victor Lopez work evokes images of excitement, bravery and sorrow as Erebus and Terror: The Lost Ships retells the story of the Sir John Franklin expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. Beginning with anticipation as the explorers depart their homeland, the rousing melodic theme is written for clarinet, horn and alto saxophone. The excitement of the journey turns melancholic for a few moments, as the gravity of their journey sinks in, but their courage is again renewed as the trumpets tell the story. A haunting flute and oboe duet foreshadows the inevitable crash portrayed with strong chromatic dissonances, into the ice and the loss of both ships and their crews. The journey has ended for these men, but their story lives on and Sir John Franklin is remembered as a hero due to his valuable contributions to the development of Canada's north. Highly recommended!
