We fight for many things: love, patriotism, freedom, ideology, possession...all of which have cost tremendous sacrifice. It was the battles, the blood and sweat, and the sacrifice of those that came before us that created the world as we know it. Remembrance is a tender, melancholic reflection that silently gives thanks to every step and every sacrifice that was made to bring us what we have today. Yes, what we have may not be perfect--nor is it anywhere near complete--but with each generation's responsibility to carry the torch and never forget, hopefully we can make everything worth it. Performance Notes This tender piece is an excellent opportunity to explore nuanced phrasing. While many sections may play similar parts, often the phrasing and dynamics are marked differently across the band. Each of these discrepancies should be brought out and add to the perpetual motion of the piece. Per Norgard's Hedda Gabler - Incidental Music and Suite (1993)  for Viola, Harp and Piano. Programme note The music was composed for the BBC production of Henrik Ibsens's famous play “Hedda Gabler”. For the production the director Deborah Warner changed the location from Bergen, Norway to Dublin - two cities with many things in common, both in size and atmosphere.  All the movements are played attacca, as one movement, and the reason that I accepted this incidental music to be performed as a concert piece is that it has a unity - decided by Deborah Warner and me - always following the character of Hedda. In Fiona Shaw's' interpretation Hedda Gabler isjust as ruthless as Ibsen created her - but also deeply felt, understood and shown as a victim of the suppressed role of women in the Victorian age.  Therefore the associations to the salon music of the era are coloured with a strong expressionistic expression - the music being entirely created from the inner universe of the main character Hedda.  Per Norgard (1993)   .

Handwork is many things - a dreamy fantasia, a nocturne, a folk-song, a Latin-American dance with much prominent counterpoint and poly-metric intrigue. Handwork is sometimes tonal with crunchy Prokofiev-like dissonances. There are obvious Bartókian octatonic passages in the development, followed by a Persian free-rhythm Santur variation. A dream-like fragment of a Beethoven minuet briefly appears. The work concludes with a re-statement of the opening subject in it's simple, enigmatic ambiguity.
