“Fren ch composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.

The practising church musician Andreas Pieper knows with heart and soul how to adapt the level of difficulty of his choral compositions to the qualitative possibilities of a committed church choir and create simple, yet tonally beautiful choral settings. This shows in his Zwei deutsche Marienmotetten for mixed a cappella choir (SATB). Both sacred motets pay homage to the Mother of God. The composition Maria ist aufgenommen in den Himmel celebrates in song the 'Feast of the Assumption of Mary', the solemnity of the Roman Catholic Church celebrated on 15 August. Not bound to the church's liturgy, the Marian motet Hymnus von der seligen Jungfrau Maria is based on the text of an unknown poet from the 14th century which invokes the help and protection of Mary.

This edition of Salve Regina by Gabriel Faure is a version of this Marian hymn for a SABT accompanied by the Piano or the Organ, arranged by Henri Busser. This features lyrics in Latin, and can be sung by two or four voices also accompanied by Violin or Cello ad libitum. This lyrical piece is quite slow (tempo 66) and the Organ score does not feature any pedals: the difficulty could meet the skills of upper intermediate level players. Five verses can be distinguished in the whole piece and its polytonal aspects make it sound really rich and harmonious. Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the greatest composers among his peers and strongly influenced all the following generations of composers. One of his best-known compositions is the famous 'Requiem'..

The aged Simeon takes the new-born Jesus in his arms, recognises his significance and celebrates this moment in a paean of praise as the fulfilment of his life. In Matsushita's motet this song of praise, the nunc dimittis, stands at the centre of the composition. Here, the triad of C-F sharp-G, used for the word hodie - today at the beginning, symbolically combines with a Gregorian-like motif, revolving around the central note of B flat in whole-tone movement, and which is used to represent the Virgin Mary. The work ends with a mystical wash of sound, a whole-tone cluster which emerges from the aleatorically repeated basic motifs of the work, and fades away to nothing.

Some forty settings of the four Marian antiphons by Johann Michael Haydn are extant, among them 17 settings of the Salve Regina. The Salve Regina in B flat MH 90, here published for the first time, dates from about 1765, and it survives in a contemporary manuscript copy at Gottweig in Lower Austria. This early composition by Haydn already bears witness to this talent for setting a liturgical text to music. The dialogue between the bass soloist and the choir gives this work a radiance of its own.

Text by Alan J. Hommerding.
The first words are Elizabeth's reflection after meeting the Virgin Mary. The second text is Joseph's reflection after the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his dream. The vocal forces build with each verse, culminating with an SATB cadence. The composition closes with a gentle conclusion that can be performed a cappella. Perfect for the Advent season or any Marian feast.

Matsushita's composition draws on elements of the Gregorian antiphon. It begins in unison Gregorian chant, as was typical of Renaissance motets, and the beginning of new lines of text are also derived from Gregorian material. Matsushita juxtaposes a syllabic, rhythmic declamation with this melody, constantly alternating bars with even and odd numbers of beats, the octave C' - C'' constantly repeated by the outer parts and leading towards the climax at the text nomen Jesu. After ascending D major arpeggios, the central word Jesu radiates into F sharp major, the following repetition in the compass of an octave on C is more tranquil, ending peacefully with an F major chord, ppp.

Variazioni sawiane (2021) was written for organist Jan Bart?omiej Bokszczanin. The title refers to the Polish composer Marian Sawa (1937-2005), and the variations are based on a theme from his music. The theme is a metricized version of the original psalm chant from his final composition, Missa Claromontona (2005) for chorus, organ, and timpani. An introduction based on the theme's opening motive leads to a gentle aria that presents the melodic theme twice in its entirety. This is followed by a quasi-ricercare, a scherzetto, a meditation, and a festive return to the opening material. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 8 Composed: 2021 Published by: Zimbel Press.
