The Iowa Tests of Music Literacy are the only nationally standardized music achievement tests published in the United States. These tests are designed to (1) evaluate students’ continual growth in music achievement, (2) diagnose individual students’ strengths and weaknesses in music achievement, and (3) compare students’ relative standing in music achievement. There are a total of six levels in this series, and each level is sequentially more difficult. All six levels are organized into two parts: Tonal Concepts and Rhythm Concepts. Each of these parts takes 45 minutes to administer and will yield information on listening, reading, and writing. Levels 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for Grades 4 through 12, and Levels 4, 5, and 6 are appropriate for Grades 7 through 12. The complete kit includes manual, 50 rhythm and 50 tonal answer sheets for each level, one Level 1 CD and one test cassette for each of the other five test levels, one set of scoring masks for each level, 50 cumulative record folders, and six class record sheets, an introduction to testing booklet, and two research monographs. Items also available separately.

Philip Sparkes Komposition besteht aus einer langsamen modalen Ballade, gefolgt von einem fieberhaft schnellen Satz. Ein grossartiges Solowerk fur Euphonium und Brass Band!

Two aptitude tests designed to diagnose and measure music potential:* The only brief, longitudinally valid music aptitude tests for Grades K-6. * Crucial in helping music teachers adapt instruction to the individual musical needs of their students. * Requires no reading or music skills. The administration time is at most two 20-minute periods. Both tests have a similar design. The “Primary†test is recommended for use with younger children (K-3). The “Intermediate†test is recommended for older children or younger children who find the “Primary†test too simple. Test materials and how they work: 1. Children take the test by simply listening to a tonal cassette and a rhythm cassette. Each tape is only 12 minutes long. 2. Questions on the tape are identified on the answer sheet by pictures, not numbers or words. The children must decide whether pairs of tonal or rhythm patterns they hear sound the same or different. They indicate their choice by simply drawing a circle around the picture on the answer sheet. These tests require no reading skills. 3. The answer sheets can be corrected quickly by using scoring masks. Raw scores are directly converted to percentile ranks in the manual. 4. A profile card is used for each child for individual documentation and the interpretation of scores. The tonal and rhythm results are graphically compared for each child. 5. A class record sheet helps interpret the test scores for the entire class. 6. The manual gives complete information for administering, scoring, and interpreting test results. The manual also makes suggestions for formal and informal music instruction, and includes a discussion on the nature and description of music aptitude, as well as a comprehensive bibliography. Complete kit includes: 100 rhythm answer sheets, 100 tonal answer sheets, CD with tonal and rhythm tests, introduction to testing booklet and two research monographs, one set of scoring masks, manual, 100 student profile cards, and four class record sheets. Items also available separately.

The Musical Aptitude Profile (MAP) is the world standard in music aptitude testing. The MAP test is by far the most researched aptitude test on the market today, with more than 30 years of history as the most comprehensive test of music aptitude ever published. MAP is a complete test with seven components: tonal imagery (melody and harmony), rhythm imagery (tempo and meter), and musical sensitivity (phrasing, balance, and style). The entire test takes about 3.5 hours to administer. Revised in 1995, MAP now features remastered recordings and an updated manual. The test must be scored manually with a set of scoring masks available from the publisher. The MAP kit includes manual, compact discs, 5 class record sheets, 50 answer sheets, and 50 profile cards, scoring masks, introduction to testing booklet, and four research monographs. Short on time? For those who need only tonal, rhythm, and composite scores, we recommend the PMMA, IMMA, or AMMA tests (depending on the ages of the students). These tests take from 20 to 40 minutes to administer.

The Full Score for Peter Maxwell Davies' fourth in a series of ten string quartets commissioned by the Naxos Recording company, first performed by the Maggini Quartet on 20th August 2004 at the Chapel of the Royal Palace, Oslo, Norway, as part of the Olso Chamber Music Festival. Composer Note: The fourth Naxos quartet was written in January and February of 2004, with the intention of producing something lighter and much less fierce than its predecessor, an unpremeditated and spontaneous reaction to the illegal invasion of Iraq. I returned to the well-known Brueghel picture of children's games (1560, now in Vienna), which had been the inspiration for my sixth Strathclyde Concerto, for flute and orchestra. These illustrations liberated my musical imagination, but I feel it would limit the listener's perception to be too specific about which game relates to exactly which section of the work. Suffice it to say that there is vigorous play - leap-frog, bind the devil with a cord, truss, wrestling - alongside quieter pastimes - masks, guess whom I shall choose, courting, odds and evens. The single movement juxtaposes these activities as abruptly and intimately as they occur in Brueghel. Rather as the eye is taken into different perspectives and proportions of scale within the picture, taking liberties which would never be present in, for instance, Brunelleschi architectural drawings, so here, with a constant sequence of transformation processes, I have distorted the neat, precise implications of modal progression, expressed in the unison opening phrase (from F to B through A sharp/B flat), so that the ear is led, en route, into the sound equivalents of strange passageways and closed rooms: sicut exposition ludus. As work on the quartet progressed I became aware that I was reading into, and behind the games, adult motives and implications, concerning aggression and war, with their consequences. It was impossible to escape into innocent childhood fantasy. The nature of the F to B progression underlying the whole construction derives from a passage in the development of the first movement of Mahler's Third Symphony, and the opening of Schoenberg's Second String Quartet. However, unlike in these models, here a real - if temporary - sense of resolution occurs at the close of the quartet: as when the curtain falls on the reconciled Count and Countess in 'Figaro' one wonders how long the F/B truce will hold, and games break out again. The quartet is dedicated to Giuseppe Rebecchini, Roman architect, and friend since the nineteen-fifties.

A fantastic showpiece for any euphonium player.

Dedicated to Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon, Baltimore Chamber OrchestraBassoon Duration: 5'3 Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing PROGRAM NOTE: The year 2020 has definitely been a very challenging year with many upheavals. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.
